More HIV Cases From Heterosexual Contact Than Drug Use in Md.

WASHINGTON - Heterosexual transmission has moved past injected drug use as the main cause of new HIV cases in Maryland, said the state's AIDS Administration.

The trend began in 2002 and continued into 2003, the latest year for which figures are available. The administration said that 46.3 percent of people who contracted HIV in 2003 reported doing so as a result of heterosexual contact, while intravenous drug use made up 33.2 percent of the cases, and men who reported having sex with men accounted for 17.5 percent.

In 2001, by contrast, injected drug use was blamed for 41.4 percent of new HIV diagnoses, followed by heterosexual intercourse at 39.8 percent.

Colin Flynn, the chief of epidemiology and health services research for the Maryland AIDS Administration, said the shift to heterosexual transmission of the virus in the state simply mirrors the "common mode in the world" for spread of HIV.

"Generally, HIV has three overlapping epidemics -- gay men, drug use and the general population," Flynn said.

But others said the shift might not be so clear-cut.

John Nugent, chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Maryland, said that there may be an overlap between some groups. For example, he said, there are people who "originally acquired HIV through needles who are now practicing unsafe sex through heterosexual intercourse," and attributed the virus to sex and not drugs.

Flynn agreed that heterosexual contact and injected drug use seem to be related.

But, he said, "Given the large amount of heterosexual transmission, we are also seeing heterosexual-to-heterosexual transmission."

Jeffrey Grabelle, program administrator of AIDS Action Baltimore Inc., said drug use and heterosexual activity are hard to isolate, particularly in Baltimore, where HIV/AIDS mainly result from a combination of heterosexual activity and injecting drugs.

"Possibly a lot of them are lying," Grabelle said, referring to men who test HIV-positive and cite heterosexual transmission as the cause. "Guys don't want to admit to having sex with other guys and shooting drugs in the past."

One reason for the rise in heterosexual transmission could be "because we've spent a lot of time in the homosexual and drug-using communities, and not so much with heterosexuals," Nugent said.

Krupa Shinde of the Health Education Resource Organization (HERO) said the shift underlines the need to broaden HIV-education efforts from specific groups to the larger population

"HIV prevention is for everyone," said Shinde, program director of prevention/education at HERO. "The highly vulnerable subgroups should be an emphasis, but we shouldn't neglect the general community."

In other words, here are some statistics and a statement saying how our statistics may be wildly inaccurate.

Right. And I like this one, too:

"The highly vulnerable subgroups should be an emphasis, but we shouldn't neglect the general community."

Translation: we want more money from the government.

A couple years ago Baltimore became the number one city in the country for Syphilis. (gotta be number one in something) At that time the city begrudgingly admitted that part of the problem was the amount of sex being traded for narcotics. They are basically glossing over the same issue again.

DOCTOR TO PATIENT: "You have AIDS. How did you get it."

GAY PATIENT: "From a prostitute."

DOCTOR: writes down: "Hetrosexual transmission" on report.

GAY PATIENT TO PROSTITUTE: I told the doctor about you, Bruce.

HIV has been isolated from blood, semen, vaginal secretions, saliva, tears, breast milk, CSF, amniotic fluid, and urine.

This is probably only about 40% off the mark. They never ask if the guy a girl got aids from is also getting it in the @ss from another guy, which would make him gay. So although it appears to be a hetero transmission it actually is just a gay man spreading it into the hetero community. These questionaires aren't invasive at all and are about as realiable as internet polls.

This is a bunch of crap. The whole "AIDS is coming to a suburb near you" myth was created to get money for groups that engaged in risky behavior.

To date, no documented transmission via saliva, tears, or sweat.

Hopefully, people having sex won't come into contact with CSF or amniotic fluid. I guess it's possible . . . someone could get carried away, bang their head on something, and fracture their skull.

Participants in casual sex be forewarned: don't drink the breast milk of strange women. Not much danger here for gay males, fortunately.

Blood, semen, vaginal secretions. Well, I imagine those fluids pose the greatest risks, compounded by lifestyle choices. Gay men don't have to worry about vaginal secretions either. Protect yourselves.

Anybody who maintains that HIV does not cause AIDS should be willing to take a nice syringe and fill it with blood from the veins of an HIV+ infected person, and inject it in his own veins. What, no takers?

Actually, scientists have done just that in the past to prove that a given disease was not contagious. Indeed, Peter Duesberg and another scientist offered to inject themselves with purified HIV as long as the NIH would agree to follow and regularly publish their prognosis. When NIH refused, Duesberg replied "What, no takers?"

Homosexual Agenda Ping.

Odd numbers from NJ. Very odd. Sounds like the 10% number from Kinsey. Some people must be lying.

Down the thread is a "discussion" about whether AIDS is really caused by the HIV virus. I kind of ignore such debates.

Also, I have read of cases where the virus was transmitted by saliva.

Let me and DirtyHarryY2K know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

Um, Aids is not a gay disease. It is a SODOMY disease. The reason that proportionally more women have it in Europe than in the US is that heterosexual sodomy is more common there.

I would be interested in how many of those who claim they contracted it through heterosexual sex also practice heterosexual sodomy.

Then there is the dry-sex thing in Africa, but that is a subject for another thread...

While I agree with your point I take issue with the last three words of this sentence.

It would not make him 'gay'. It would establish that he practices sodomy. However, no one is 'gay' There are mentally diseased heterosexuals who practice same sex sodomy but there is no such thing as a 'homosexual'

What you do is NOT what you are.

<< "Possibly a lot of them are lying," Grabelle said, referring to men who test HIV-positive and cite normal sexual activity as the cause.

Ah, the voice of reason .... >>

Right on.

Of course no-one is HIV infected by taking it up the Kyber Pass or as the consequence of sharing needles with other deviates and degenerates. They're all normal and are busily puffing away with their monogamous girl friends.

And it is still the simple fact -- especially now the poofters' willful contamination of all of the world's blood banks has killed off pretty much all of the hemophiliacs -- that no-one "catches" AIDS. He permits someone to infect him with it.
