I, unfortunately, wrestled with "Toby the Bear" at the Crawfish Festival in Breaux Bridge, LA, several years ago.
Over the years, I've seen them both in the mountains. I wouldn't want to tangle with either. Fortunately, they seem to keep their distance.
Question: Does anyone know what you are advised to do if confronted by a stalking Mountain Lion? Are you supposed to charge and hope it runs away (I guess you're screwed if it charges you) or are you advised to run or act as if you didn't see it?
Any wilderness types out there?
What a coincidence! I wrestled with "Chucky the Crawfish" at the Bear Festival in Flippin, GA only yesterday. Damn those pincers.
Most likely, you will never see a stalking mountain lion. If one is after you... you'll probably not see him coming until it is pretty much over.
There's not a lot you can do. Not gonna outrun it, and not gonna convince it that you're scary. :-)
Bobcats are much smaller and less fierce. Not really dangerous to anything bigger than a chicken.
A Mountain Lion, A Town named Lyon, Some Pot and A Sheriff's deputy...John Carson has to be knocking em dead in Heaven with this one.
An excellent novel on that subject is Track of the Cat, by Walter van Tillson Clark.
If you run, you're dinner. If you stand your ground, you're well-disciplined dinner.
make yourself appear as big as possible. ie.stand tall, spread arms out & if available open up jacket, stand up on your mt.bike, hold something big up, etc... and slowly back away..
.do not turn your back on it and dont try to run..
thankfully have not yet had to use the advise here in Oregon...
ROFLMAO Excellent.
best to be packin in cat or bear country. but, most cats will scare if you yell and charge... unlike bears.
i do live in big cat country, and have seen their tracks often and have seen one behind the barn. they are hard on colts here and i fear being on a horse and having it spook from a cat more then i do the cat itself. horses really seem to dislike the buggers.
Too, Too funny!!!
Definitely ROTFLMAO!!!!!
Ahhhh... maaaaannnn... that's bad. LOL!
Also... lions in the wild will generally try to avoid people, and especially barking dogs. Sorta like bears. Make lots of noise, let mister lion know where you are and what you're doing, and hope he's not particularly hungry.
One one the bigger mistakes made here in WA was the outlawing of hound hunting for cougar several years ago. One of the (apparently) little known benefits of hound hunting is that it makes the big cats skittish of barking dogs. Many neighborhoods have barking dogs, and this helps to discourage the cats from coming down into the suburbs for groceries.
More and more cats are sighted in suburbs all the time, partly because there are more cats, partly because there are more suburbs, but also because the cats are losing their basic fear of people and dogs. Its a bad combination.
Bobcats that I`ve seen are around 15 lbs. They eat mice and rabbits.
