Dyslexic drivers 'slower to react than drinkers'

DYSLEXIA can slow down a driver’s reaction time more than "moderate" drinking, it was claimed yesterday.

A study found that motorists with the reading-and-writing disorder - which affects as many as one in ten of the population - took longer than normal to react to traffic signs.

But campaigners dismissed claims that the findings mean people with dyslexia should face extra tests before being allowed to drive. The new study showed that drivers with dyslexia took 30 per cent longer to react to road signs in a driving simulation, while drivers who are just over the alcohol limit show an increase in reaction times of ten per cent.

"The controversial finding will raise questions about whether people with dyslexia should have extra tests before being allowed behind the wheel," said a report in the New Scientist.

Odd, my little brother had bad dyslexia and was a very high ranked BMX, kart and sports car racer, almost as good a me, as well as being a very good lacrosse and hockey player.

The study is flawed, actually Dyslexic people react in the same time frame but they turn left when they mean to turn right. I learned this at the last DAM (Mothers Against Dyslexia) meeting I went to.

I don't know, I'm still confused by those traffic warnings. Why do they have a sign for "POTS"?.

Most dyslexics can read and write - it just takes them much longer to learn these skills and somewhat longer to perform them.

I don't see how inability to read words on signs is a significant impairment in terms of safety - stop, yield and danger signs convey their messages through images (like falling rocks) or shape and color (red octagon).

I can see how dyslexics would be more likely to take the wrong exit or miss a detour.

Even if they were more prone to miss safety-related signs, the fact that probably ten million people who know no English are on US roads right now is a greater concern.

Sports don't have road signs.

Ever raced a road course in a sports car or a kart? Ever seen a pit board? I'd say those are signs.

What about dyslexics who drink? Would that increase or decrease their problems?

I wouldn't try driving, but in other matters we're still damn good fun.

Hmm I only get dyslexic when I'm having migraines. I do everything backwards. Talk backwards, write backwards...and I only drive if it's really important or an emergency.
