Company Pulling Kid's "Sheriff's T-Shirt " Because of Gun Complaint
email ^ | 2-05-05 | basil

Posted on 02/05/2005 8:07:27 AM PST by basil

My daughter orders some baby clothes from this company in Florida. Although she did NOT order the t-shirt in question, she received the following email:

From: "Johnnie Boden"

To:

Subject: Apology

Date: Fri, 4 Feb 2005 16:32:15 -0000

Dear Customer

I am writing to apologise.

We feature a T shirt in our new Mini Boden catalogue with an image of a toy gun (Sheriff T Shirt). Many of you have contacted us about this.

I don't want you to think we are an irresponsible organisation. I founded this company to create clothing ranges that captured a spirit of fun, honesty, individuality and family. We have made a mistake with this product and we feel stupid, especially me. Please accept my apologies.

To be perfectly honest, I didnít give the selection of this T shirt enough thought. I have 3 girls, Anna, Kate and Stella. We donít see any guns in our household. I relied on memories of my toys when I was a boy (a long time ago) when life was a lot safer.

We have now removed the Sheriff gun T Shirt from sale in the US. However, as we print our catalogues well in advance you could receive another which still features the T shirt.

Thank you very much for letting us know how you feel. Keep the feedback coming; good or bad. Itís the only way we can get better.

I am truly sorry.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Johnnie Boden

Perhaps a bit of "freeping" will help this Brit understand the American Culture a bit better--especially the Red State Culture!

Funny thing is--this is a British Company, and apparently they've had no complaints over there, as the t-shirt is only being removed from American issues of their catalog.

No--my daughter threw out the catalog--and it does not appear in the new one. Apparently it showed a kid dressed up as a sheriff, holding a pistol. I think it was more or less a cartoon figure--not a photo of an actual child.

Looks like the majority of clothing has a beach motif.
Expensive. So some families are anti-guns? My daughter played little sheriff with guns, holster and boots when she was about 5 years old and she grew up just fine.

Well go figure! Someone probably just got up in the morning and was trying to find something to complain about.

This owner probably would have been better off making a statement acknowledging the complaint and etc but then saying that he hoped his customers would look for other shirts or apparel that they would prefer to buy or something to that effect. There aren't near the people who would not be offended as the few who are and they don't count.

I work a couple of hours a day at a K-2 school in the kitchen.

One day I put up the picture below as a joke with the caption: "This property protected byDeputy Barney Fife."

The next day it was taken down.

"Why", says I.

"Can't have guns in school", said Teach!

But it's apparently okay to offer kid's t-shirts with an Indian armed with a tomahawk looking as if he's about to take somebody on, I guess.

  4. of a toy

Boden is in the control of his PR people and financiers. He has a lot vested in succeeding in the USA. It's a bad move with your currency being so weak, but you have a lot of rich snobs in the US so maybe they will be prepared to pay his outrageous prices.

I hate the PC shit that prompted his grovel. He should eat more meat and have some boys.

Ain't life grand!

I'm puzzled by this part:

I relied on memories of my toys when I was a boy (a long time ago) when life was a lot safer.

Can you help me out here? He doesn't want guns yet laments a time gone when he felt much safer. What can you really believe in this guy? My first impression is that he's a teetering bedwetter.

Oh, and welcome to the Freep.
