SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) - Dr. Laura Schlessinger, famous for doling out advice on her nationally syndicated call-in radio talk show, shared a little of her own personal life with U.S. Army reservists.
Schlessinger told some 300 people at a 425th Civil Affairs Battalion event on Saturday that her son, 19-year-old Deryk Bishop, will join the U.S. Special Forces later this year - a mission that could take him to the Middle East.
Bishop, who enlisted last year, joined his mother on stage to explain his reasons for signing up. He told the crowd at the Calvary Chapel that he resented the way Americans criticize the war without recognizing soldiers' sacrifices - a theme echoed by his mother.
"Real people were fighting and I wanted to be part of that," Bishop said.
Schlessinger said she wasn't too worried about her son.

Even if he serves stateside in a non-combat specialty, he is already an American hero, IMHO.
Not all of us...!!
God bless him for serving. God bless his parents for raising such a fine young man!!!
Is this not the son by her current husband? The kid's last name is Bishop.
I'm sure his mother has more than enough money for him to never have decided to serve. This young man is a "true" American. Goes to show that the rich and the poor love their country equally!
Are pics of Dr. Laura mandatory or prohibited?
Her husband's name is Lew Bishop.
Good luck, He is joining it does not mean he will make it through the course.
He needs luck, determination, and ears. (listen to instructions)
Dr. Laura and Rush were the 2 biggest reasons for my conservative conversion and my political awakening.
May God protect him,
and all of our troops.
Agree! God Bless them all.
God blessed her with a great son.
May the Lord give His angels charge over Deryk and reward him for his unselfish act of service.

He wouldn't be alive to join the military if he hadn't learned to listen! His mother would have seen to that lesson real fast. She's much to be admired and enough can't be said about the son's desire to serve his country. There was a picture of him on her webpage and he isn't very big; tall but very slender, and probably a Black Belt like his Mom. I think he'll be ready to meet the enemy if he's anything like his Mom. It will be interesting to watch his career through her radio program.
The last I heard about her was that she was possibly thinking of converting to Christianity after practicing Judaism. Does anyone know anything further about this or was this just a rumor?
Are you serious? Her mom was a Catholic Italian gal and, as I understand, Dr. Laura became a conservative Jew as an adult(her dad was Jewish).
I think she's a pretty neat lady.
I also heard that she denounced the Jewish faith.
I would like to know how he is going to join the Special Forces, when you have to obtain the rank of Sp-4 and be promotable to Sgt before being accepted into the program. It took me several years to become qualified.
My guess is he is going into the Rangers program - which is considered a branch of the SF - (and you don't need that grade/rank to enter).
Let's see, she was speaking at a CA BN meeting - which is part of SOCOM. Maybe he is going into Civil Affairs?
I heard that she had a change of heart. She was talking about how she had received much more love and compassion from Christians and none from anyone Jewish during a rough time in her life and it made her stop and rethink her own religion. But, I am not a Laura expert and have not heard her in a long time....so someone out there may know what the current story is on that.
Oh, gee, thanks! I thought that was what I had heard! I had remembered specifically what this article said in that she had a change of heart due to the responses from her audience. Just as the article stated, she felt more love and positive feedback from the Christian community than the Jewish community. Haven't heard anything else since, because I have not had a chance to listen to her show.
If they're as boring as her radio show - prohibited, please.
The DUmmie crowd is eating this one up.
