Hate Preacher Thrown Out

Furious Muslims turn on Finsbury Park cleric

By Justine Smith And Bobby Pathak

THE hate preacher exposed in yesterday's Mirror has been kicked out of Finsbury Park mosque by outraged moderate Muslims.

Ranting Abu Abdullah agreed to leave after being confronted by community leaders, who were backed by riot police.

Earlier, the cleric was chased out of another mosque and attacked by worshippers when he tried to hijack a prayer meeting.

Abdullah took over Friday prayers at Finsbury Park from hook-handed Abu Hamza, who is in jail awaiting trial on charges including soliciting murder.

Appalled by his venom, peace-loving Muslims decided enough was enough. Ihtisham Hibatullah, of the Muslim Association of Britain, said: "He was told he wasn't welcome. There were angry words. But with police outside, he left.

"This man and his followers were damaging the community and the reputation of Islam. Ordinary Muslims were afraid to come here. The mosque can hold 1,000 people but only ever had about 80." The locks have now been changed.

Abdel Shaheed, chairman of trustees appointed to turn the mosque round, added: "We'll make sure it's open to everyone. We want to close this unfortunate chapter."

Mirror reporter Bobby Pathak, who went undercover at Finsbury Park, North London, for six weeks, told how Abdullah raged at "filthy" disbelievers and hailed "honourable brothers" in Guantanamo Bay.

Yesterday it emerged the cleric was beaten after he and a dozen followers interrupted prayers and a talk on Islamophobia at the London Muslim Centre in Whitechapel, East London.

Inayat Bunglawala, of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: "He ranted at me that I was teaching poison. Then his goons made trouble. They were chased out and Abdullah was beaten a bit." He was later seen hobbling and wearing dark glasses.

LOL Now that's funny. The liberation of Iraq seems to keep giving. First the Palestinians went through the knees and now this.

I sure hope this is true. If I'm not mistaken this was the mosque that the shoe bomber attended and got radicalize at. It was also the place that "captain hook" with the claw presided at. Maybe this is a turn around. Don't know, but maybe . . .

Finally...

Years after the patently obvious has been recognized by non-muslims, the "moderates" awaken from their decades-old stupor.

Thank God for small favors; hope it's not too late.

I'm skeptical. This crowd seemed to have little problem with Mr. Hook (Abu Hamza), it's only the fact that he was put in jail that took him away from them. I'd say they probably have more problem with the bright light of truth shining on them than they do with this cleric.

Can you elaborate on this? What was the recent article about?

Is this the start of 'moderate Muslims' pushing back against the crazies? Was this regulars at the Mosque who thought he just crossed the line? Muslims from other communities that thought this mosque was out of line?

Perhaps they were too frightened to make trouble. And now that the ravings of extreme islamists are being outed, these people have finally decided to make a stand.

Here's to hoping for the future...

"beaten a bit"

It is sad that it takes some force to curb people promoting violence, but that is reality. I hope the violence promoters get the message real quick (actually this is loooooong overdue) that inciting violence won't be tolerated.

"I guess some people just need a good a$$ kickin'."

We all do at some point in our lives, but most of us learn early and learn fast. There is a whole culture out there that has never learned this and has promoted behavior that accepts flying airplanes into buildings and cutting innocent people's heads off.

There is, as you might expect, a much more cynical motive - a while back, the Finsbury Park mosque's charitable status was in question. They have a need to remain in the good graces of the government in order to retain this, otherwise, they'll get taxed. Probably punitively so.

I suspect they are keeping militants out for this reason.

More about this...

Hard-line cleric faces expulsion from Finsbury Park mosque (January 17, 2003)

Note the following passage:

Now the Charity Commission, which can act if it considers that the mosque is being used for political purposes, has given Hamza until Monday to answer complaints that he has misused his position. Court action to remove him could follow.

The commission suspended Hamza as the khajeeb, or part-time imam, last April for making statements of "an extreme and political" nature that conflicted with the mosque's charitable status.

He ignored the ruling and carried on preaching. Shortly before Christmas, he was given until Jan 20 to make representations or face permanent exclusion.

David Rich, the head of investigations at the Charity Commission, said last night that Hamza, 45, had compounded the earlier breach of the rules by staging, "to all intents and purposes, a takeover" of the mosque. "He and his supporters are occupying the mosque to the exclusion of the trustees," Mr Rich said.

I used to live up the road from the Finbury Park mosque - it was for the creme de la creme of extremists, I assure you. These people were so fanatical that they would hear Abu Hamza preach on the cold streets when he could not preach on the inside of the mosques. I have difficulty believing that the mosque has changed so radically that they would expel a radical preacher without some form of external pressure applied.

Regards, Ivan

MadIvan suggests that there is likely outside pressure that is causing this to happen.

I expect the Mirror article is factual in so far as it goes, but is is not giving a lot of background info that would show us the deeper levels. Take note of MadIvan's link to the story from 2003 and read between the lines . . .
