Congresswoman Asks for Probe After 'Gannon' Quits WH Reporting Post

By Joe Strupp

Published: February 09, 2005 updated 2:00 PM ET

NEW YORK Jeff Gannon, the controversial reporter for conservative Web site Talon News who drew complaints for gaining access to White House press events, resigned from his job last night amid liberal blogs' allegations about his real name and his personal and professional life.

Today, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) sent a letter to President Bush asking him to "address the matter" in light of "mounting evidence that your Administration has, on several occasions, paid members of the media to advocate in favor of Administration policies."

Last night, in a message on his Web site (www.jeffgannon.com), Gannon announced: "Because of the attention being paid to me I find it is no longer possible to effectively be a reporter for Talon News. In consideration of the welfare of me and my family I have decided to return to private life. Thank you to all those who supported me."

In an e-mail to E&P last Friday, not published until now, Gannon wrote: "Much has been made about whether I use a professional name or not, but I am reluctant to provide information one way or another because of the threats that have been made against my person, property and family in both internet postings ... as well as in e-mails that I have forwarded to law enforcement. I'm sure you understand."

E&P has not been able to reach Gannon again today.

Gannon, whose real name, according to investigators at DailyKos and other blogs, is James "J.D." Guckert, first gained attention several weeks ago when he asked a question at a presidential press conference that some in the press corps considered so friendly it might have been planted. Later it was revealed by E&P that Gannon had been turned down last year for a congressional press pass because he could not prove his employer was a valid news organization. That denial barred him from receiving a White House "hard pass," allowing regular access to White House press events.

But Gannon had been obtaining daily White House press passes, a situation that had irked some veteran White House reporters who also questioned his credentials or considered him to be too partisan in his questioning.

Gannon's refusal to deny he used a fake name sparked investigations by a number of blogs, including Daily Kos, Eschaton, and World O' Crap, that probed his true identity. In addition, those sites posted allegations yesterday that Web sites such as hotmilitarystud.com, militaryescorts.com, and militaryescortsm4m.com, were registered to the same owner as Gannon's personal Web site, according to the blog MediaCitizen.

In her letter to President Bush, Rep. Slaughter charged that "it appears that 'Mr. Gannon's' presence in the White House press corps was merely as a tool of propaganda for your Administration."

Dan Froomkin, the Washington Post columnist, said today in an online chat, "I had less of a beef with Gannon than I did with the folks who actually on him (at press conferences)." He said "the heat should be on" Bush spokesman Scott McClellan: "Why did he call on Gannon? Did they ever pre-arrange anything? Did they have contact with his parent organization?"

Another intriguing issue is his involvement, along with better known Robert Novak, Judith Miller and others, in the Valerie Plame/CIA episode. His name turned up on a list of reporters targeted for questioning by the federal prosecutor in the case. Froomkin of the The Washington Post wrote last spring that "the reason Gannon is on the list is most likely an attempt to find out who gave him a secret memo that he mentioned in an interview he had with Plame's husband, former ambassador and administration critic Joseph Wilson."

The Talon News site today scrubbed its archives of many "Gannon" articles and removed his biography.

It pains me to see FReepers jumping all over him with nothing more than the say-so of the leftists and the fact that Jeff resigned from his job.

Well it certainly would help stifle the rabid lefties if Jeff simply clarified a few basic biographical facts, like where he went to school and how old he is. Cripes, how can you defend somebody who won't defend himself???

The political partnership of Armstrong Zúniga (AZ) was formed in January of 2003, by Jerome Armstrong and Markos Moulitsas Zúniga. From 2001 through 2002, Jerome’s popular weblog served as the original nexus for the decentralized netroots effort of Howard Dean’s presidential campaign. Markos began DailyKos.com during the summer of 2002 (now the most popular political weblog with over 3 million monthly visits).

Hang on...I was looking for a list of reporters who have been subpoened in the Plame matter (the way the reference this thread article is made it archly hints if one is subpoened, one is somehow complicit with the WH and we know of scads of dem symps who have been called) and I found a reference to the memo that predates Gannon's interview!

I don't have an account at the WSJ and am too lazy to sign up right now to read the whole thing, but here's the FR thread and some posts fill in some info:

Memo May Aid Leak Probe

October 17, 2003

It was not only Gannon who had heard about the "secret" memo unlike the latest dem spin/lie.

So they were working with the Dean folks for a long time.

I wonder if Zuniga has ever disclosed that to people who go to his web page.

I wonder if they used those sites to violate any campaign finance laws.

You've got to be kidding me..........what difference does it make where he went to school or how old he is?

Cripes, how can you defend somebody who won't defend himself???

How do you know he is not defending himself.........just because he's not posting here means nothing. Did it ever cross your mind that maybe he was advised to not say anything publicly?

Having had threats made against me, first as a reporter, and later as a lobbyist, I know full well about not discussing said threats publicly. I can talk about them now because both events happened years ago.........not within the VERY recent past.

Let's cut the man some slack and stop jumping to conclusions because he happens to be remaining silent at the moment.

I think Sean Hannity also had a copy of the leaked memo. They won't go after him because he will fight back. I hope Jeff does too, but he doesn't have a television and radio show to blast them everyday like Hannity does.

Maybe when Rush gets back he will take them on since all of this started after Rush mentioned Jeff's name.

It goes straight to credibility. "Know your source."
Is he actually a reporter, or simply reading a script written by Karl Rove.
Good grief. With all the digging into the background of the biased lamestream media on this forum over the last 7+ years, it is EMBARRASSING to see the 'bots trying to stonewall the simple question "who is this guy?"

I happen to know he is a reporter........in fact at CPAC last year we were comparing notes on some stories we had both covered, for different media and from different locations, in Delaware.

Am I going to share personal information about the man with people I don't know?.......of course not.

The man has indicated there have been at least hints of threats against him and his family.......as I said, having been in that position his remaining silent at the moment is a prudent move.

Do I care if you like it? No I don't.

Unless you have something relevent to say to me, please keep your prurient curiosity confined to others who might care and leave me alone.

Would the White House let people in the same room as the president without some kind of background or ID check?

As someone in the journalism business, I can attest to the fact that a lot of people use "professional" writing names, as do many movie stars, novelists, etc.

A number of writers, it seems, were born with really crappy names.

Gee, nobody ever questioned the "fawning press" over their gushing love for the clintons...

Like when a certain, nameless, "hard news reporter" wished that he could be a fraction as "good" as the clintons.

Disgusting...

Besides, the rats never needed to pay the MSM to get their propaganda out... The MSM was simply the public relations arm of the leftist wing of the demonRAT party.

Participating in what? A reporter writes under an assumed name.

Having him in the press area under a fake name, knowing that the name being used was, in fact, fake.

He isn't the first and he won't be the last to do so.

Do you have information about other reporters who have gotten into the White House under false names?

Gannon, whose real name, according to investigators at DailyKos and other blogs, is James "J.D." Guckert...."

I just checked my Penn State alumni directory and found this entry:

Guckert, Donald James '78 BS, '78 BA, '86 M ENG
r: (address in Columbia Missouri and phone number follows)

I don't know if this is the guy, but it looks pretty coincidental. There are two other "Guckerts" listed, but one is a doctor who graduated in '61 and the other graduated in 2000. Neither has a "James" in his name.

Just did a run-through on your google-cached dailykos page.

Man! Those guys at dailykos are really on his case! Unfortunately, it looks like they have a pretty-well coordinated search-and-destroy mission going there.

They have a photo of Gannon and a photo of Guckert, (from an AOL home page) and, to my eyes, there is a distinct similarity.

I hate to say it, but this appears to be a bunch of lefties who are as dogged in their eforts as we were on RatherGate...

Hang on to that cached page; Gannon may need it in a harassment suit...

If I were Gannon, I'd be keeping my head down, too!

Yup, I just got off the phone with my buddy Karl and he told me exactly how to respond to your post.

Good grief.....take a little bit of common sense and reread my posts.

Have you ever been threatened because of something you have done in the course of your job/profession/career? I have, it's not something to be taken lightly. In fact, it scared the bejeezus out of me. And it concerned enough people I worked with that when I worked late, which was nightly when the legislature was in session, I was escorted home. My then boyfriend (now husband) went so far as to gift me with a handgun because there was so much concern.

If Jeff chooses to be silent at this time (IMO a smart move) I'm going to respect that choice. I wish others, specifically you, would also.

Operating under what false pretences, Torie? Unless you know something I don't know, we have no proof Jeff Gannon didn't give his real name to the White House when getting his daily press pass. And he wouldn't be the first reporter to use a pseudonym. Remember Mark Twain?

Here is a site that has the October 17, 2003 WSJ article about the "secret memo" so we can read it without signing up (I used to have a password for WSJ but have forgotten it):

The reason this is important is because the Daily Kos has been pushing the Gannon story and one angle they are using---and are wrong about---is they're saying Gannon was the only reporter with knowledge of this memo. This proves that is flat out wrong.

Memo May Aid Leak Probe

WASHINGTON -- An internal government memo addresses some of the mysteries at the center of the White House leak investigation and could help investigators in the search for who disclosed the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency operative, according to two people familiar with the memo.

The memo, prepared by U.S. intelligence personnel, details a meeting in early 2002 where CIA officer Valerie Plame and other intelligence officials gathered to brainstorm about how to verify reports that Iraq had sought uranium yellowcake from Niger.

Thanks for that. I saw your earlier post just after I made mine. He still isn't using his real name, but it is a closer match according to the Snopes version. It's an interesting question, whether reporters are using their real names or pen names (to the public that is).

If he is using a nom de plume he had no choice BUT to give his real name in order to get WH credentials.

I don't understand why so many peole are getting their panties in a wad over whether or not the guy is using his "legal" name or a "professional" name.

It is something that is done on a daily, regular basis and always has been.....yes even in this post 9/11 age.

If I were to go back into the business, as has been suggested to me more than once in the past few months, including tonight, I would go right back to the name I used to use, even though it is not my "legal" name. And I would be able to pass any and all security checks.

cyncooper: The source that Daily Kos is citing for linking Jeff Gannon to the leaked CIA memo written by a State Dept employee is the Washington Post. Apparently they reported that Jeff Gannon was the only reporter to actually see the memo whereas other WH press corps members only received an oral background briefing.

I must say that this story doesn't bode well for conservative information channels on the Internet. The identity issue is the objective concern. How did Gannon, if that is his name, get access to the White House? How did Talon News get a WH correspondent only a month after its creation?

Apparently Milbank's position at the post is nothing more than the "Bush Hate" desk.

The lefties need human sacrifice and blood to energize themselves. It attracts those disappointed by the election results. Attacking Republicans gives Democrats something to do, other than twiddling their fingers, while the Bush Administration very ably takes us into the next century.

I hear Tony Blankley is next on their "isolate and obliterate" target list.

DailyKos and allies have found a genuine THERAPY FOR PEST SUFFERERS! Attack Republicans on scurious charges, have pals threaten them. This tactic galvanizes the liberal base. Remember the Scream? It's the "attack" cry.

But Gannon had been obtaining daily White House press passes, a situation that had irked some veteran White House reporters who also questioned his credentials or considered him to be too partisan in his questioning.

Uh huh.

At President Bush's press conference yesterday, ABC News (search) reporter Terry Moran (search) described the case of a Jordanian activist, Ali Hattar, who Moran said had been arrested and charged with slander for promoting a boycott of U.S. goods. Moran called it an "abuse of human rights," and invited the President to condemn it, saying, "If you won't, sir, then what ... do your fine words [about freedom] mean?"

Then it was send in the clowns time as the media started asking their questions. It wasn't so much a question and answer period as it was an interrogation. First question? How could Bush be so wrong about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and how could he take us to war on false premises? Straight out of the liberal playbook. At the beginning of the war in Iraq John Kerry had the same view on WMDs as did George Bush; ditto for the United Nations and most of Europe. To hear the media tell it there was only one person in the world last March who felt that Saddam Hussein had stockpiles of WMDs, and that person was George Bush. Then, we had the question that Bush would not answer...and it was priceless, because they tried more than once. Does the president feel any personal responsibility for 9/11? The first question that comes to mind is whether or not it is even appropriate for a reporter to demand apologies from the president at a presidential news conference? But ... ask the question they did.

Here is a link to the Washington Post story about the "secret memo" and hinting that only "conservative news outlets" had heard about it, yet goes on to cite only Talon News and does not specifically mention the WSJ article that was published over 10 days before the Gannon piece.

Leaks Probe Is Gathering Momentum

I will note that the reporters, Allen and Milbank, mention "CIA officials" disputing the memo and its contents. Unfortuantely, their source was either a poor one or a lying one (I pick the latter) as the memo surfaced and was precisely as described and Plame did attend the meeting.

Don't tell the dumb@$$es at dailyKOS, but using multiple names is just as simple, legal -- and common -- as filling out the colored field of this form:

(This example happens to be from DD1879 -- the form for background investigations up to Top Secret.)

Don't tell the idiots at dailyKOS, though -- let them go crazy chasing their own tails!! LOL!!

Great example.

I think we can help lay this story to rest by pointing out as many softball questions from MSM for the Fornicator in Chief as we can. I can't find anything thru Google-- how about it guys? Anyone got old transcripts from Cigar-boy's press conferences?
