Controversial University of Colorado Professor Ward Churchill, who compared victims of the 9/11 attacks to Nazis says he's "not backing up an inch," insisting, "I owe no one an apology." Speaking at his university last night, Churchill said he not only had the right, but "indeed the obligation" to make the comparison.
Meanwhile, questions are mounting about who Churchill actually is. He's built a career in part on his claimed Native American heritage, but a genealogical study by the Rocky Mountain News has found no Native American ancestors in his family.
And a fellow researcher has looked into questions about Churchill's claim -- in a book and other works -- that a deadly smallpox outbreak among Native Americans in the 19th Century was started by the U.S. Army. According to Lamar University Assistant professor Thomas Brown, none of the sources Churchill cites said anything of the kind.

Anybody that wants to call himself (or herself) an Indian, is an Indian. But to get the special entitlements that are bestowed upon Indians, you must be a part of a recognized tribe. The Lumbees of North and South Carolina, for example, are no longer a recognized tribe, as their blood is greatly diluted by European and African anscestry, and they have not retained any identifiable culture.
Anyone of less than 25% blood quantum, by tribal custom, are denied membership in that tribe, unless some sort of adoption procedures are carried out. This general rule does not necessarily apply to all tribes.
But it does for the Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, the tribe to which Ward Churchill claims membership. In some math-impaired estimation, the blood quantum has been variously expressed as one-eighth, three-sixteenths, one-sixteenth, or even one-sixty-fourth. None of which even minimally qualifies.
CU should fire Ward Churchill for being a fraudulent Indian.

Consider: Churchill has constructed his entire academic career around the claim that he is a Native American, yet it turns out there is no evidence, other than his own statements, that this is the case.
Churchill has said at various times that he is either one-sixteenth or three-sixteenths Cherokee, yet genealogical reporting by the Rocky Mountain News and others has failed to turn up any Cherokee ancestors - or any other Native Americans - in Churchill's family tree.
Why should we care one way or another? We should care because Churchill has used his supposed Indian heritage to bully his way into academia. Indeed Churchill lacks what are normally considered the minimum requirements for a tenure-track job at a research university: he never earned a doctorate, and his only degrees are a bachelor's and a master's from a then-obscure Illinois college.
Churchill's lack of conventional academic credentials was apparently compensated for, at least in part in the eyes of those who hired him at the University of Colorado, by the "fact" that he contributed to the ethnic diversity of the school's tenure-track faculty.

Not opening fire.....All we need do is consider that the sources of support Churchill is getting are as disreputable as he is. "La Voce de Aztlan"? That'd be like Bobby Byrd getting support from the "Church of Jesus Christ, Christian", AKA The Aryan Nation.
The more publicity for this clown, the better in my opinion. The more people that hear about his thought process, the more people that will demand he be fired.

When my oldest daughter answered native American in some PC social studies class when the teacher was asking kids what nationality they were. The teacher mocked her and said she didn't look like an Indian. She answered with a question.
If the ancesters of the Indians migrated from Asia, and her ancesters, between 3-? generations past, had migrated from Europe, just how long does it take to become a native American?
The class cracked up, and the teacher didn't have an answer.
When asked nationality, I always answer that I am a native American!

Let’s see if I got this right. An unnamed lab has conclusive proof that Church-ill is of American Indian descent.
I must have missed a bunch of advances in DNA screening. I didn’t know that it could trace your ancestry that close.
I also read The Independent Media Center’s Mission Statement. The first paragraph of reads:

Some how I am suspicious.
