Activist lawyers fear 'chilling effect' from verdict (Lynne Stewart's conviction)

In the wake of activist lawyer Lynne Stewart's conviction yesterday, several defense attorneys said fear of prosecution could now hamper zealous defense of unpopular clients, including suspected terrorists.

Others agreed with prosecutors that Stewart crossed a line that made her situation complex.

Activist attorney and radio talk show personality Ron Kuby, who once represented Stewart's client Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, said the verdict will intimidate attorneys handling unpopular political clients.

"It makes it that much more easier for the government to intimidate activist lawyers," Kuby said. "The threat of 20 years incarceration is a terrible deterrent against zealous advocacy."

And Dear old Ramsey Clark has joined Saddam's defense team. What a SOB. Why do these people continue to live in the USA? I just can't comprehend this BS.

"Activists"... Yeah, right!

How about treasonous, liberal scum? And cry baby whiners to boot... It's not like we're going to cut their heads off and videotape it.

…the very people who cling to it as if it was the only right we have.

It seems the 1st Amendment’s free press clause is the only part of our Constitution they are aware of.

Might also deter treason, as well.

It's only their means to an end. They'd toss it as soon as it was no longer useful. They believe in liberty about as much as I believe the Moon is made of cheese, as in nil.

Lynn Stewart was not convicted of representing an unpopular client. She was convicted of a crime which had nothing to do with her duties as a lawyer.

Communism is alive and well and it is killing America.

So with these people, it is simply a matter of degrees of popularity, not whether or not a criminal act was committed?

Welcome to the world of the modern leftist, folks.

There were a couple of freeper defense lawyers gnashing their teeth and heaping ashes on their heads on that other thread over this.

I see they ran out of guts before they got over here.
