Delivery discrimination claimed Pizza policy angers local NAACP head, others
Daily Progress ^ | 2/11/05 | Claudia Pinto

Two pizza delivery chains refused to send drivers to a public housing community Thursday afternoon, shocking and angering members of the AIDS/HIV Services Group and the president of the local NAACP.

Kathy Baker, ASG’s executive director, said that when Domino’s and Papa John’s were called to deliver to an HIV testing event at Westhaven public housing community, the businesses responded that they don’t deliver to Hardy Drive.

“I find it quite inappropriate. Whether it’s intended or not, it results in socioeconomic and racial discrimination,” Baker said. “We order pizzas from them all the time and it never occurred to me that it would be a problem. It seemed mind-boggling that they could consider doing that.”

Managers from Domino’s and Papa John’s said they don’t deliver to certain areas of the city out of concern for their drivers’ safety.

People shouldn't have to put their lives at risk just so you can eat pizza.

If you aren't willing to clean your neighborhood up and you want pizza that bad you can get off your fat arse and go pick it up.

It will be interesting to see Freeper responses on this one. I am all for the pizza chains deciding when and where they deliver.

I live way out in the boonies. Do I get to whine (and maybe sue) because I can't get pizza delivery?

Businesses have a right to not serve whomever they choose. The also have the responsibility to protect their drivers! It's not the pizza joints fault that certain areas attract unsavory types!!

Don't get POed at the pizza folks...look around you and get POed at THOSE folks because they brought it on themselves!!

It's about safety, and many of these drivers are hard working college kids who are also black themselves. NAACP irrelevant as ever.

I think his statement reeks of racial arson. He seems to be making a bold assumption that all of the residents are of a particular race (I doubt it) and that the place is as safe as the rest of the city to deliver to (I doubt it) and that the delivery people have relatively the same incidence of getting stiffed for the tip or taking a stiff tip of a knife. He's the racist, not the business people.

almost all restaurants have the right to refuse service so why shouldn't pizza delivery places have a right to choose their delivery zones--maybe that address was outside of normal delivery routes and then it could be a "combat"zone for drivers. This is about a business's right to run their business as they see fit.If this was the only pizza they could get then why didn't they drive and pick it up???

The articles states that an address gets put on a no deliver list when a driver gets robbed and/ar assaulted there. Have they addressed THAT issue that got them put on the list in the first place? It's about safety not discrimination. Not that racial discrimination doesn't happen because it sure does! I don't think that this issue about that.

For point of reference, the pizza places are NOT refusing to sell pizzas to those customers, they are only refusing to deliver. Delivery is an extra service they are not obligated to perform.

First off, you miss the basic premise behind the democratic party and the NAACP, which is that these people are not in housing because of their own fault, neither is the crime rate in their area too high due to their own killing of people and robbing them, rather it is the white mans fault, through years of oppression and racism, it is people like me and my family who are to blame.

Secondly, you somehow imply that ghetto blacks could and would clean up their mess. How very racist of you! Only continual funding of black programs by the federal gub'ment could clean up their mess, lower crime, etc. To even imply, that this is something that could do would have lead to the impression that they are somehow "empowered" and we can't have that. Also on that note, you seem to think that ghetto blacks WANT to clean up the ghetto. How white of you.

Don't you know that there is status in living in horrible ghettos? Have you not watched MTV over the last 15 years? The most popular tattoo on black youth these days is "Ghetto Thug". No my friend, this is not something that ghetto people would or could change.

Therefore, it is OUR responsibility. It is the responsibility of big bid'ness, and gub'ment.

Your statements have lead me to believe that you are somehow one of the kook right wingers with no sympathy for urban plight. You are starting to sound like Bill Cosby, and if you keep it up, we will pay someone to make allegations against you, to show what a hypocrite you really are and diminish your ability to voice your views on minorities improving their situation through better lifestyles.

So in short, how DARE you even try to imply that this is somehow their own fault. It just shows that you are racist.

/sarcasm off

I delivered pizza when I was in high school and in college.

There were places to which we would not deliver.

We would meet people a short distance away in a well lighted place if they wanted to do that instead.

Being a pizza delivery person is statistically significantly more dangerous than being a police officer. A higher percentage of pizza delivers are killed on the job than police officers.

Well, whatever you do NAACP, don't consider the possibility that your "community" may actually have a problem with violent crime. It is so much easier to blame "discrimination" than to actually try to do something about crime-ridden neighborhoods.

A limited number of the people in taxpayer-supported rent free homes with digital cable are there because of bad situations beyond their control, but the majority are there because of bad life-decisions or sheer laziness or greed to suck off the government teat. Basically, they are only there to keep a democrat in office.

Yeah we should deliver pizza to you - even though FBI crime statistics show that most racial crimes are committed against whites by either blacks or hispanics - it is not the other way around. Blacks need to start taking responsibility for their behavior and problems in their community - America is tired of hearing the same old race baiting crap.

As a former Pizza Delivery Guy I am all in favor of it.
We had lost several drivers to fatal robberies – one was a cop working a sting trying to help us. All of the national chains stuck with the “no weapons” policy, we (being a local chain) did not. After several bad guys were shot we had no more problems. I delivered in bad neighborhoods and actually had to step under crime tape one time. No one bothered us.
The national chains still had problems.

I recall a disgusting statistic from college - if a structure is built for housing rent paying tenants, expect 50 year viability, but if that structure is to be used for "public housing" expect a 20 year life.

Why is public housing so much nicer (initially, anyway) than bachelor enlisted quartedrs at any military facility? That sure doesn't seem fair.

Some people think "racial discrimination" is a magic phrase that allows them to get whatever they want whenever they want. There is obviously other factors involved.
The sad part is that many others have been trained to back down once somebody says the magic phrase.

Delivery pizza? The height of laziness!

They're not hard to make from scratch yourself. And a LOT of fun. try this one, they're terrific!

Stuffed Florentine Pizza:

Ingredients:
1-3/4 to 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 package active dry yeast
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water (120 degree F to 130 degree F)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (4 ounces)
1 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
1 slightly beaten egg
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 3-1/2-ounce package sliced pepperoni
1 2-ounce can mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1/4 cup sliced pitted ripe olives (optional)
1 slightly beaten egg
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons cooking oil

Directions:
1. In a large bowl combine 1-1/4 cups of the all-purpose flour, the yeast, and the salt. Add warm water and oil. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes. Using a spoon stir in whole wheat flour and as much of the remaining all-purpose flour as you can. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic (6 to 8 minutes total). Divide dough in half. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
2. Grease a 13-inch pizza pan. On a lightly floured surface, roll each half of dough into a 13-inch circle. Transfer one circle to pizza pan. Build up edges slightly. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Set aside.
3. Pat spinach dry with paper towels. Combine spinach, 1 slightly beaten egg, and the 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Spread spinach mixture over mozzarella cheese. Top with pepperoni, mushrooms, and, if desired, ripe olives. Brush edge of dough with some of the remaining slightly beaten egg. Top with second circle of dough. Pinch edges to seal. Score edges with a knife, if desired. Cut 14 to 16 slits, about 1 inch long, in top crust for steam to escape. Brush crust with the remaining egg and sprinkle with the 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese.
4. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until heated through. Makes 6 servings.
Make-Ahead Tip: Prepare dough. Divide into 2 portions. Place in plastic freezer bags. Seal, label, and freeze up to 1 month.

Mangia!

I delivered Pizza's for years, we had redlined areas we would not deliver to... usually this happened after 1 or more armed robberies in the area of drivers... and if a driver from any pizza shop was killed in a robbery the area was redlined and no more deliveries at all by any shops in the area.

Don't blame the Pizza shops for being rational.

If they have to live in public housing why are they ordering pizza for delivery ? Is there some kind of $$ disconnect here ?

No slam at Papa John's. For store-bought pizza they're not bad. I like to use the garlic sauce when I make garlic bread.

And the jalapenos they pack are hot 'n spicy. Good for keeping your arteries clear.

Just what I was thinking. I taught my daughter to make pizza when she was seven, and now she's on her way to becoming a good cook (at age twelve). We now have homemade pizzas once a week.

I also used pizza as a way to explain finance and business to her. I broke down how much it cost us to make a pizza versus how much the delivery companies charged. I also give her a portion of our savings.

It's been twenty years since I ordered a delivery pizza. Maybe that's one reason my family does not live in public housing.

And after you've had a good homemade pizza, you realize the delivery pizzas do not taste nearly as good.
