Ward Churchill's lies in his Recent Speech
Vanity | 2/12/05 | Soliton

Posted on 02/12/2005 9:57:14 AM PST by Soliton

Ward Churchill said in his most recent speech that Wall Street was named because of a wall that had once been part of a holding pen for slaves. He also said that the Wappinger tribe only thought they had rented a portion of Manhattan to the Dutch and that when they contested the sale the settlers massacred them, cut off their heads, and played kickball with the heads at roughly the site of the Twin Towers.

The facts are easily googled.

“A century before, Dutch settlers had built a wall to protect themselves from Indians, priates(sic), and other dangers.” - The History of the Stock Market

"The name of the street derives from the fact that during the 17th century, it formed the northern boundary of the New Amsterdam settlement where the Dutch had constructed a crude wall of timber and earthwork in 1652. The wall was ostensibly meant as a defense against attack from Lenape Indians, New England colonists, and the British, but it was never tested in battle. The wall was dismantled by the British in 1699." - Wikipedia

And as far as the kick ball reference:

This was a little more difficult to pin down. The reference is to the “Pavonia Massacre”. It took place in Pavonia, now Jersey City in 1643, 17 years after the purchase of Manhattan and it had NOTHING to do with purchase of Manhattan. The Wappinger who sold the island were actually fleeing another Indian tribe, the Mohicans:

"For obvious reasons, the Dutch had restricted the sale of firearms to the tribes near their settlements on the lower Hudson. The Munsee could get guns from the Swedes, but the Wappinger were ill prepared to resist the Mahican. In the winter of 1642-43, 80 heavily-armed Mahican warriors came to the Wecquaesgeek villages demanding tribute. The Wecquaesgeek refused, and in the melee which followed, 17 were killed and many of their women and children captured. To escape the Mahican, the Wecquaesgeek fled south to what they thought was the protection of the Dutch settlements. After a two-week stay on Manhattan, they moved across the Hudson to the Hackensack villages near Pavonia (Jersey City) and Corlear's Hook. Because of their recent confrontations with the Dutch, the Wecquaesgeek were not especially friendly, and there were incidents. At this point Kieft ignored the advice of his council and decided to exterminate the Wecquaesgeek to set an example to the other "Wilden" (wild men). On February 25th, 1643 the Dutch made a surprise night attack on the sleeping Wecquaesgeek villages killing 80 at Pavonia and another 30 at Corlear's Hook. Dutch soldiers reportedly brought the heads of their victims back to Fort Amsterdam and played kickball with them." – Delaware History http://www.tolatsga.org/dela.html

Fort Amsterdam was located on the southernmost tip of Manhattan Island. The Twin Towers are located north of Wall Street and although fairly close to the site of the fort by today's standards, it would have been outside of the settlement that the wall demarcated.

As with other references made by Churchill, he has slanted the facts or, outright lied, for political reasons. By associating Wall Street with slavery, he attacks capitalism. By associating the Twin Towers with a famous massacre of Native Americans, he justifies his call for more 9/11’s. Fortunately, neither association holds up to even amateur historical research.

"Fortunately, neither association holds up to even amateur historical research."

"Amateur historical research" is clearly more valuable than his paid "educated" knowledge (bias).

Wikipedia, I would not put much stock in that for a reliable source for a recipe to boil water

anyone can join and edit that site... imagine how that works for the revisionists

This is a guy who claims that United States soldiers in the 1800s deliberately infected indians with smallpox - While many attrocities did occur during the Indian wars, that event was not one of them. THe british did it, with smallpox infected blankets long before that, but no American Military person is known to have used Biological Warfare against the Indians.

He lies about everything, including his "combat service in Vietnam", so why should anyone take what he writes as the truth?

He's intellectually immoral and dishonest period.

The story gets even more interesting. Most American Indian groups did not have the same concept of ownership of the land that the settlers did. It is likely that the Indian was selling land he did not even own!

"the settlers massacred them, cut off their heads, and played kickball with the heads"

Whoa, steady there Ward. If you condemn acts such as these, you might have to condemn acts like the jihadi beheadings of hostages, or the slaughter and mutilation of US contractors in Fallujah.

Wouldn't want us to think you were operating from a double standard or anything now would you?

Please note that he never mentions the 17 Indians massacred by the Mohicans either. Only white men kill Indians in his racist world.

Churchill does seem to have a habit of being loose with the truth. His renditions of reality remind me of Kerry's supposed Christmas in Cambodia.

Thomas Brown, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Lamar University, Beaumont, TX, writes in his essay, Ward Churchill and the Mandan Indian Smallpox Epidemic:

...This article analyzes Churchill’s accusations against of the US Army of a genocide. Churchill argues that the US Army created a smallpox epidemic among the Mandan people in 1837 by distributing infected blankets. While there was a smallpox epidemic on the Plains in 1837, historians agree that it was accidental, and the Army wasn’t involved.

...

Ward Churchill was previously accused of plagiarism and research fraud in two published articles by University of New Mexico law Professor John Lavelle.[1] Churchill’s tale of the Mandan genocide appears to fit the pattern that LaVelle first laid out.

I can vaguely remember some B-Western movies and some tv programs from decades ago that used the theme that infected blankets and/or grains were given to some Indian groups. Some times the villain was an unscrupulous trader; other times, cavalry. [Maybe Churchill used Hollywood as his resource. ]

So approximately 350 years ago some Dutch massacred some Indians. Interesting historical footnote, but this has any relevance to the 21st Century because ...?

Churchill wrote pages and pages about how Hollywood paints indians in a bad light, and ANY movie about indians, even with Indian actors, was wrong...

That is, until his master, Russell Means, acted in a few movies... then all of a sudden Disney's Pocohantas is the Holy Grail of Indian Movies... sigh...

Exactly. If you have to go back hundreds of years to try to justify actions then it is pretty pathetic. Lots of things happened in the past....what if we all were running around taking revenge for something that happened centuries ago...then there would be a never ending replay of the past. Western civilization, for the most part has gotten over the past and therefore has progressed.

Give the tenured professor a break!

Life's tough enough going through the day with a face like his without having an unwashed interfering with facts. You're probably one of those plebeians who (shudder) work for a living.

You disgust me!

There are "facts" at wikipedia? No doubt any mention of Kickball with the heads of indians was edited in, probably by Churchill himself.
You are 100% right. Wilipedia is the last place one should look for facts. It's a collection of the common popular belief
of the day. If the site is visited by mainly lefties, It will reflect their common beliefs, and tin foil hat conspiracy theories; a revisionists' paradise!
