Boy is Aborted 3 Times and Lives
The Times (UK) ^ | 1/14/05 | Lois Rogers and Sarah-Kate Templeton

Posted on 02/14/2005 3:50:53 PM PST by marshmallow

A BABY survived at least three attempts to abort it from the womb and was born alive at 24 weeks old. The boy was delivered in hospital after his 24- year-old mother changed her mind about wanting the child after feeling it move on the way home from an abortion clinic.

Although the clinic had told her an ultrasound scan had confirmed the child was dead, she went into labour that afternoon and the boy was born alive.

Now two years old and healthy, he is the first long-term abortion survivor to have been born so prematurely. His remarkable entrance into the world is documented in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The mother had not realised she was going to have a baby until 22 weeks into the pregnancy and felt that she could not cope with a second child. She was given a series of abortion drugs over four days at a private clinic.

After birth the child was rushed to the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit where he was on a ventilator for 7Å weeks. He fought off several life-threatening infections and suffered from severe lung disease for his first six months. He was allowed home after seven months of treatment.

Dr Paul Clarke, one of the report’s authors and the baby’s doctor at Hope hospital in Salford, Greater Manchester, said: “This mother went through extreme hardship waiting to see if her baby was going to make it. She was told to expect him to die so many times. I am full of admiration for her.”

The attempted abortions had been carried out at the British Pregnancy Advisory Service’s Blackdown clinic in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Clarke reveals that paediatricians often intervene to save babies who have survived abortions.

He writes: “Late abortion raises serious practical, ethical and professional concerns. The dilemma of being telephoned about an infant born showing signs of life following termination of pregnancy is one that many paediatricians have faced. If viable, and resuscitated, those infants who survive may suffer significant illness.”

The paper calls for a review of late abortions at private clinics where there are no staff qualified to give emergency treatment if babies are born alive.

Ann Furedi, chief executive of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, said: “It sounds highly unusual. Usually we would keep a woman at the clinic until she delivered the foetus. When women are having a late medical abortion they are normally attended in the clinic by nursing staff with specialist midwifery training.

“It would never be the case that a woman would be discharged with the expectation that she would deliver at home.”

You mean they don't deliver the coup de gras? What are they, physicians or something?

There are so many "you gotta be kiddings" and "what the *#!!s" in this piece, it's hard to know where to start.

God bless the little fighter who wanted to live and wouldn't lie down and die.

I'm a little confused here. Was the hardship that the baby might live or that it might die?

Hey , give her a break.

She said she was having a hard time "coping" with the pregnancy.

Rape, incest, life of the mother and "cope-ablility"- all the necessary exceptions.

They kind of work on the same principle of slaughterhouses sparing the cow that jumps a fence and runs around town. By the time they catch it, somebody cares about it and wants to help it. Too bad nobody cared about this little guy in the womb

Boy is Aborted 3 Times and Lives

Lois Rogers and Sarah-Kate Templeton (the authors) need to get an education.

The boy was not aborted. He survived 3 abortion attempts. The correct title should read:

Baby Boy survives 3 Abortion Attempts

Is this a serious paper or a tabloid? Sorry for my rant all--sometimes it gets the best of me. Rant over.

The Times is what the Brits like to call a "quality" daily. It was not a tabloid last time I was in the UK but I seem to recall reading a report recently that said it was changing to the tabloid format.

Perhaps one of our English members will confirm or deny.

But the kid was unwanted--shouldn't that make it legal to just have the doctor kill him with his bare hands? I mean, it's not a "wanted child" (as opposed to just a child), so it's just a choice. Three times the state failed this poor woman, they should have had Blair personally strangle the choice in his incubator. I mean, OBVIOUSLY this isn't a human being we're talking about, it's just a blob, right? ANYONE can see that!

How's my Pro_Choice impression doing?

So, the difference is simply inside or outside the womb. Inside, kill. Outside, save.

Sorry to rain on your thread. I remember a time when we were all required to learn the King's English. The English do not seem to learn the King's English these days.

"Bad grammar will give the people impression you are ignorant" is one of my favorite Mom lines. It gets the obligatory eye roll, but it is true.

Bad grammar aside "Good for the little boy!" I hope he has a good life.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the statement about first late-term abortion survivor.
Because way back, thirty or so years ago, My neighbor's daughter attempted an abortion.
The mom found out, hauled her daughter to the hospital and told the doctor not to come out of the delivery room without TWO live bodies.
He did.
I can remember how small that baby was, head the size of an orange, and they had to put doll clothes on it when it could finally come home.
Just questioning the late-term statement

I assume this baby's health problems come from the fact that his mother tried to abort him. Now, supposing he hadn't survived. Could the mother be made legally responsible for the death she caused?

That's a great old-school pro-choice imopression. Here's the updated version:

"That poor girl had to seek an abortion, not once but three times, because anti-choice extremists who want to control all birth control promoted abstinence and held up tax money for shoddy condom distribution in the schools. Like I said, because they don't want 10 year olds using garden begetables and latex to learn the facts of life, that means they want to keep you from buying an diaphram when you're 30, don't worry about the logic, just trust me on this, that's just what they want!! You know us, we like abortion safe, legal and rare. OK, well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad!"

I wonder what the mother tells the kid when he's old enought to understand all this!

Usually we would keep a woman at the clinic until she delivered the foetus.

As long as they keep calling it a "fetus", to many it's simply some sort of malignant growth.
