See, so we pretty much agree. But I've not heard anything new that comes close to the quality and depth of the Artists - and their works - on my list.

Where were you on the day the music sucked?

Trying to get back on topic, the remark from the article says it all:
ABC is also much more competitive. "Desperate Housewives" had more viewers than the Grammys in the same time slot on Sunday, Nielsen said. But there was little evidence that many people switched over to the Grammys when "Desperate Housewives" was done.
People forget Desperate Housewives is one of the highest-rated shows all season. It's a situation akin to a couple of years ago when the Oscar ceremonies co-incided with a new first-run episode of HBO's The Sopranos.

So what's "good music" to you ?
I recently found a working turntable and dug out some of my old albums from the hippie days. I couldnt wait to listen to good music again. As Buffy St. Marie played, I wondered how I could possible have thought she could sing. The same with several others.
I guess my taste changed.

And his parents complained wildly about how bad it was compared to their music from the 40's/50's.
I had the same thing from my parents until I found a 78 RPM of a song that had these inspiring lyrics :
Mare's eat oat's And Doe's eat oat's And Little Lamb's eat Ivy.

maybe this had something to do with it:
Grammys Get Hip (Hop) This Year LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - As rap and hip-hop experience an unprecedented level of influence on American culture, appreciation for the music is hitting a similar high-water mark in the creative community.
Nowhere is that more evident than in urban music's domination of the nominations for the 47th annual Grammy Awards, which will take place Feb. 13 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Rap/hip-hop artists certainly have been nominated or won before in the big four categories -- album, song and record of the year and best new artist. But the net has never been cast as wide.
its an entire genre of music based on racist attitudes, drug culture, "gangsta" culture, violence, objectification and demeaning of women, promiscuous and dangerous sex, cop killing, etc. It might sell a lot of CDs to a select audience of adolescent boys, but that doesn't make a very good Neilson rating.

Music sales are in the dumps and they expect that to translate into a huge Grammy viewing?
Blame MP3 trading. Yeah, right.
I've noticed 80's tunes are being played more. Some stations around here do all 80's on the weekends and lunch, drive home during the week. As for MP3's, I see 80's, 70's, international (non-US), and country tunes being posted more than pop-rock, rap, R&B, etc.
I download MP3's several times a week and have no idea if Usher is a person or a group.
