David Brock: Conservatives 'Willing to Lie' to Influence Media
CNSNews ^ | February 15, 2005 | Marc Morano

Posted on 02/15/2005 9:21:13 AM PST by MisterRepublican

Washington, D.C. (CNSNews.com) - David Brock, a former investigative reporter for conservative publications before flipping his political ideology and writing a book titled, "Blinded by the Right," said Monday that the best way for liberals to expose the current conservative influence in the media is to show how conservatives are "simply willing to lie."

Brock is currently the president and CEO of Media Matters for America, a liberal media watchdog that takes on some of the biggest names in conservative media. In authoring the 2002 book, "Blinded by the Right, The Conscience of an Ex-Conservative," Brock not only distanced himself from the conservative movement, he disclosed his homosexuality.

Monday, he noted examples of how the "professional" or "mainstream media" are influenced by conservative talk radio, the Internet and think tanks. That influence, Brock said, will diminish as the conservative "lies" are exposed.

"The conservatives seem to be particularly vulnerable because the quality of their research is particularly low. There is typically self-interested money behind it and of course they are simply willing to lie," Brock told a group of interns at a luncheon at the Center for American Progress headquarters in Washington D.C.

Brock urged the young media activists to challenge what he views as the conservative media bias.

"I think that all of that has to be confronted in a systemic way. If you shine light on propaganda over time, it does cease to have an effect," Brock said. "Their words can be used against them. The fact that the claims that they make are often dubious can also be brought up in a very effective way," he added.

Brock is rapidly turning into this year's Michael Moore, making unsubstantiated charges of lying against every one to the right of himself.

It may be time to start paying attention and exposing to his own lies, half truths, distortions, etc.

What Brock means by conservative media bias is the bias of conservative media: his legerdemain reduces to charging that the views of conservative commentators are, indeed, conservative.

It seems Brock likes to tout his former conservative connections in an effort to appear bipartisan, but anyone with even a little bit of common sense would know that Brock is himself a filthy liar and hate monger. The fact that he "flipped" is good for conservatives. We don't need people like him to soil the gene pool. No doubt he was burned by someone on the right and now he is just trying to get some payback for it. What a tool. Media Matters is beyond contempt.

There is typically self-interested money behind it and of course they are simply willing to lie...

Of course, according to this morally confused author, there is nothing wrong with PETA, NOW, NARAL and other left-wing liars and nut-cases. Their views make up a substantial portion of left-wing thinking.

So when the left pumps "self-interestd" money into their ideas that turn out to be lies, its okay. But when the right puts their money behind ideas that are called lies, but turn out to be true, its not okay.

You have gone through the looking glass, Alice.

Brock identified what he considered the dominant conservative media outlets. "It includes newspapers like the Washington Times and the New York Post, it includes the Fox News Channel, it includes talk radio and several highly trafficked Internet sites," Brock said.

Well, well. Free Republic is now part of the 'dominant' main stream media. This is hilarious that those outlets are seen by the left as dominant. What they really hate is that we have any public voice at all.

I read the article looking for a good example of a lie that came from the Right. Here is the best I could come up with:

Brock cited the Vietnam War record of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and the opposition to his campaign mounted by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth as an example of how conservatives seek to confuse Americans.

If that's the best that Brock can do he is in trouble with his thesis. The case made by the SwiftBoat Vets was never refuted in any way that I could see by Kerry or anyone else on the Dem side. The truth is a tough nut to crack and this past election proves it. It isn't lies that the Dems are afraid of, it's the truth.

"Of course they are simply willing to lie." Where is Brock's proof of this? Where is the research? How can he say all this with a straight face?

Brock, like so many liberals, believes that since the left does all that, well, then, the right must be doing it too. But seldom do we see the two ends of this contradiction in such close proximity as Brock has placed them here.

A quick look at this article does not reveal any specifics as to the "lies" that Conservatives are so willing to tell. The closest Brock comes to citing an example seems to be John Kerry's experience in Vietnam -- Brock says that the questionable behavior was on the part of the SwiftVets who raised "doubts" about Kerry.

If I want to list Democrat lies, I could rattle them off quite quickly: Clinton and Lewinksy, Kerry and Vietnam, Bush and the National Guard, Bush reinstating the Draft, no Social Security Crisis, worst economy since Hoover.

And one further lie from the Democrats: "Conservatives are willing to lie in order to influence the media."

They are all, per Jonah Goldberg, chipmunks compared to Rather's implosion or Jordan's immolation. When only small liars who happen to be unknown conservatives are "exposed", and that's all that's been exposed by Media Matters, either MM can't find BIG liars in the conservative press, or it is incompetent (why did Al Franken leap into my mind when I wrote that?). This is getting good when a lib says conservatives do poor research. The libs research only what supports an ideology, and THAT's poor research. They just don't get it: the truth will out eventually, even if it means the collapse of a government like the USSR!

I've always suspected he was 'outed' by the Clintons. The way I remembered it was he WAS writing conservative stuff against them, then 'fell in love' with some guy in the Clinton White House, and he suddenly turned liberal. My memory's not that great; maybe I'm wrong on this.

Why is it clear to almost noone that it is impossible to be "bigoted" against an activity?

Noone calls anyone who opposes burglary or embezzlement a "bigot" - that title is reserved only for those who oppose sodomy.

JJ - thanks for the ping.

the best way for liberals to expose the current conservative influence in the media is to show how conservatives are "simply willing to lie."

I had to think about this. "Simply willing to lie." Well, let's see.. the left has coined the liberal mantra "Bush Lied". Ergo, by extension he's asserting here that Bush voters also lie? Hmmm... It is a known fact that former President Clinton had oral sex in the office, so does this mean that all Dem voters do to?

I don't get the gist of his article except, my gut take upon first perusal. It's a warning. "They lie, so we should too!"

I'd never encourage interns, children, adults to lie. Lying makes your nose grow warts.

"Brock not only distanced himself from the conservative movement, he disclosed his homosexuality."

I think this pretty much says it all. Brock was never a conservative. Just a liberal Marxist in conservative clothing. As to exposing conservative lies, don't make me laugh. Most liberal media types would rather clime a tree to tell a lie than stand on level ground and tell the truth.

If this is his strategy for defeating conservatives, I say...BRING IT ON!

Until you learn the difference between a person's ethnicity and a person's voluntary leisure activities, you should take a refresher course in logic.

Do find the term "button man" to be an offensive term for a hired killer?

Do you find the term "southpaw" to be an offensive term for a left-handed pitcher?

Does it raise your hackles when someone says "leatherneck" instead of Marine?

Does it enrage you to hear a doctor referred to as a "sawbones"?

Would you file a civil rights complaint if people called you a "rookie" your first day on a new job?
