TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A Christian rock band banned from playing at a public school assembly filed a federal lawsuit against the suburban Toledo district on Thursday, claiming discrimination and violation of their right to free speech.

Rossford High School officials in December canceled the band Pawn's performance at an anti-drug assembly. Board members said they feared a lawsuit if they allowed a religious performance in a public school.

School officials declined to comment Thursday on the suit by the band, which is represented by The Rutherford Institute, a Charlottesville, Va., center that deals with church-state issues.

Band members said in the lawsuit that they did not intend to play any songs at the assembly that referred to religion and had agreed to stick to the anti-drug message.

Kyle Kleeberger, a Rossford senior and a member of the band, said after his group was banned that he hoped "we can get more publicity to take Jesus Christ to more levels and follow whatever his plan is."

Good. The only way we are going to defend ourselves is if we join the lawsuit game. It's all being decided in the courts these days.

Good people like these and students who are dissed by their professors should all sue.

You have to fight them or it gets worse.

Sad but true. It's as if laws don't matter. The words of the Constitution don't either.

I know. But what else do we do? We've got to fight fire with fire.

I have Mark Levin's Men in Black on my To-Read List. I think the only way to end the madness where the courts are concerned is to restrict the power of the judiciary. I think that needs to happen at the state as well as the federal level. (The Florida courts are a case in point.)

My band in jr. high was almost banned from performing at (any more) school dances as well. ......for playing primarily Zep, Sabbath, and Stones' songs at the first one --- not exactly danceable tunes. It ain't easy to dance to "Sweet Leaf," for sure.

This is a shame! What has been going on in this country over the last few years? When did it become a shameful thing to be religous?? It's insane, we have professors in colleges preaching about radical Islam and yet Catholics are forced to hide their faith!

They have a right to freedom of speech but the school does not have to give them a forum.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

They tried to avoid a lawsuit and got one anyway.

Once offering a forum for a band...the school cannot discriminate because the band has a religious theme, nor any other.

I am currently dealing with a wimpy organization about to cave on something for threat of a lawsuit. I told my 'client' we will sue them too...so that takes that issue away.

Silly kids. If they would only sing about sex and condom use, they would be welcomed with open arms.

What about Ward Churchill?

IS that college allowed to discriminate against him because he has an anti American theme?

The answer- Is yes.
