Hockey Stick on Ice

Back in the late 1990s, American geoscientist Michael Mann published a chart that purported to show average surface temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere over the past 1,000 years. The chart showed relatively minor fluctuations in temperature over the first 900 years, then a sharp and continuous rise over the past century, giving it a hockey-stick shape.

Mr. Mann's chart was both a scientific and political sensation. It contradicted a body of scientific work suggesting a warm period early in the second millennium, followed by a "Little Ice Age" starting in the 14th century. It also provided some visually arresting scientific support for the contention that fossil-fuel emissions were the cause of higher temperatures. Little wonder, then, that Mr. Mann's hockey stick appears five times in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's landmark 2001 report on global warming, which paved the way to this week's global ratification--sans the U.S., Australia and China--of the Kyoto Protocol.

Hockey is a game that receives no justice from TV, you have to see the games in person. The same with Drag Racing. But you can still take your kid to the drags and be close to the action.

Just a bunch of greedy athletes wanting to screw the kids is what this hockey strike is about.

The article is on global warming and the hockey stick theory used to promote it.

Still, questions persisted. In 2003, Stephen McIntyre, a Toronto minerals consultant and amateur mathematician, and Ross McKitrick, an economist at Canada's University of Guelph, jointly published a critique of the hockey stick analysis. Their conclusion: Mr. Mann's work was riddled with "collation errors, unjustifiable truncations of extrapolation of source data, obsolete data, geographical location errors, incorrect calculations of principal components, and other quality control defects." Once these were corrected, the Medieval warm period showed up again in the data.

Just a few minor problems....."collation errors, unjustifiable truncations of extrapolation of source data, obsolete data, geographical location errors, incorrect calculations of principal components, and other quality control defects."

But the important point is this: The world is being lobbied to place a huge economic bet--as much as $150 billion a year--on the notion that man-made global warming is real.

Asthmatics the world over have suffered from this insane delusion, as perfectly good fluorocarbon-propelled inhalant medicines have been taken off the market and replaced with dry-powder versions of the drug that have to be sucked forcibly into the lungs. The amount of fluorocarbons in one of those inhalers is ridiculously small, yet one company which manufactures brags that it took the inhalers off the market "to save the ozone layer." I wish I could say that the inmates are running the asylum, but they gave up trying to run it long ago.

So you believe that global warming led to the cancellation of the NHL season?

I hope our Canadians friends don't find out about this, then they will really hate our SUV-driving butts.

liberal science made easy:

1) start with a conclusion that mankind is evil
2) find data that supports this, ignore other data
3) profit!

I believe it is indirectly related. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman knows as much about hockey as the entire global scientific community knows about global warming. In other words - the collective knowledge could fit in a thimble.

Like the scientists, Bettman has an awareness that there should be an NHL with games, players, fans, etc., but no concept or plan of how to make it happen.
