Gotcha! (Or Maybe Not)
Blogger Joe Fairbanks notes a hilarious exchange between Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D., Calif.) and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. As the latter testified Wednesday before the House Armed Services Committee, the former tried but failed to catch him in a misstatement of fact:
Sanchez: Unfortunately, as I said, this committee has had a hard time assessing where we really stand with the Iraqi army as an effective fighting force. Over the past year, we've received incredibly widely fluctuating estimates of that. And I think you have a real credibility problem on this issue.Sometimes it seems as though Congress is run by a bunch of amateurs.
Rumsfeld: Fluctuations of what?
Sanchez: The fluctuations of--the numbers that you bandy around about how many troops we really have out there that are Iraqi police, et cetera, et cetera. . . .
Rusmfeld: Now, you say we bandy around numbers. They're not my numbers. I don't invent them. They come from Gen. Petraeus. . . .
Sanchez: I have Petraeus's numbers. They're different than your numbers, by the way.
Rumsfeld: Well, what's the date? They aren't different because these came from Petraeus. He may have two sets of numbers, but they are not different if the date's the same. The date on my paper here is Feb. 14. What's yours?
Sanchez: Dec. 20.
Rumsfeld: Not surprising there's a difference.

The Best of U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld
For Rummy fans
Loretta "Dirty" Sanchez is no match for Donald Rumsfeld!
Look for "ditz" in the dictionary and they have a picture of Loretta Sanchez.
Heck, she's no match for a sack of tack hammers.
I saw this exchange on Fox News yesterday and it was a riot. Some of these congress critters don't how stupid they are. They ought to be made to look at themselves on TV to see how stupid they look.
lol
Sanchez, isn't she a Mecha type?
Sanchez' staff must be as dumb as she sounds. Almost 2 months pass - it's a fluid, fast-moving situation - did anyone think "Duhh, maybe we better see if there are current numbers?"
Of course I know they're not just trying to make Republicans look bad...
Mecha? No, shes meat-tech. No machine is that stupid.
(yes, I know that's not what you meant...)
I listened to the exchange, Rep. Sanchez appeared to shrink when Rumsfeld cornered her. At least she got her mug on camera for a few seconds. To her, that makes it worth while. She should know better, Rumsfeld can hold his own with the best of the lot.
I am sure B1 would enjoy it and have a moment of shadenfrude (spelled correct?) at Sanchez's expense, she really is a dolt....
Loretta Sanchez is an inept nincompoop. Rummy must have felt like he was talking to a particularly petulant teenager.
I love SecDefRum too. Back in the beginning of the war on terror, when the media held him as some sort of sex symbol-- duh! I was wayyyyy ahead of them. GO RUMMY!
Rummy smacked Hillary's buns a good one, too....
(heard on Rush today)
HILLARY CLINTON: It strikes me a little odd that we would deploy a system that hasn't succeeded and expect that to serve a deterrent value. So I don't understand the sequencing of this.
DONALD RUMSFELD: I think the word "deploying" needs to be calibrated. What's being done here is not a pure test and not a pure deployment, but deploying the pieces of the capability that will evolve into an early missile defense capability, and the way to do that, according to the people
who are working on this -- and I agree and subscribe to the concept -- is to get it in the ground in a modest way, work the problems, keep testing, and as that capability evolves, you will begin to have the early stages of a missile defense capability. If you didn't do anything until you could do everything, you probably wouldn't do anything.
DONALD RUMSFELD: This is the way airplanes evolved. It's the way most -- it's certainly the way satellite systems evolved and it seems to me that they're proceeding on a measured, not a hell-bent-for-leather approach, but a measured approach to a complicated problem which, frankly, given what we read about Iran and what we read about North Korea, ought to be reassuring to us that we're doing what we're doing, and that we're at least on a track to have that capability in the period ahead, assuming we can continue to work out the kinks and the difficulties.

Wonderful, his doesn't-back-down style makes me weak in the knees.
What a dunce. The stupidity we get from some Congress critters is amazing.
I love it when GWB talks tough too.
Sanchez: Dec. 20.
Rumsfeld: Not surprising there's a difference.
LOL! Laura Ingraham had the audio of this on her show this morning :D
"They ought to be made to look at themselves on TV to see how stupid they look."
I suspect they do look and do see..It's why they hate him..
It does not cure their stupid question/wrong facts asserted problem, however.
Pray for W and Our Freedom Fighting Troops
Newt Gingrich, a close confidant of the defense secretary, said that to understand Rumsfeld you have to analyze his early passion for high school, collegiate, and Navy wrestling. "Wrestling is a very lonely business," Gingrich says. "You're by yourself in the arena. It's also a business of great precision. If you snatch wrong, you lose. So, a quarter inch can make a big difference. It's a sport of enormous focus because the match is very fast, very short, and very decisive. So you start with the idea he was at Princeton, so you know he's smart; and he voluntarily went out for wrestling, so you know he's stunningly competitive. And you know that he has a disciplined, focused ability to think about things." The sport, Gingrich says, "tends to produce very confident people who don't mind being visible, because everybody can watch them, and ain't nothing between them and winning and losing."
Rumsfeld's War, The Untold Story of America's Anti-Terrorist Commander

For many years in a row Loretta Sanchez has been voted the "dumbest person in Congress" by the hill staffers. That means she's dumber than Patrick (Who's My Daddy?) Kennedy!!
You gotta love the guy.
But dealing with wingnuts like that everyday must get annoying ;-)
That needs to be a bumper sticker
I wonder if the rumors are true about the tree stumps in D.C. turning their backs to her? (Actually, I have no idea which side of a tree stump is the back, but they know.)
"If you didn't do anything until you could do everything, you probably wouldn't do anything."
There is so much truth in this statement!
Great picture! Take that, you Dims!
Sanchez, an amateur "boxer"!
That's a joke, right? That simple pissant Loretta Sanchez really said that to Rumsfeld??
Than how the hell has she managed a seat on the House Armed Service Committee??!!
She's a Democrat, silly.
I always wish I could read her next response to Rummy. Or did she simply slink under the table?.
RUMSFELD: ...The date on my paper here is February 14th. What's yours? Not sure what Sanchez was trying to say after the exchange, but considering that she began her sentence with something as pathetic as "the difference is different in different categories", it sounds like she was just babbling in confusion.
SANCHEZ: December 20th.
RUMSFELD: Not surprising there's a difference.
SANCHEZ: But the difference is different in different categories, not in the same...
HUNTER: If the gentlemen will hold on for a minute, the gentlelady's time is up, and we're going to try to knock out a few more questions here before the...
SANCHEZ: Mr. Chairman, you spoke during my time, Mr. Chairman.
RUMSFELD: I'm going to finish if I may.
HUNTER: OK, Mr. Secretary, if you can wrap up fairly quickly...
RUMSFELD: I'll like to just finish the last thought.
General Petreaus is in charge of the training and equipping of Iraqi security forces. And General Casey and General Abizaid are the ones who advice us as to what the force levels ought to be in the country.
And it appears that General Petreaus doesn't agree with them and that's fine. I'm sure other people don't agree with General Casey or General Abizaid.
But I take my advice on this subject from General Abizaid, General Casey, and General Myers and General Pace, and all four of them think we have the right size force.
UNKNOWN: Thank you.
MYERS: Well, I talked to General Petreaus last Wednesday night on this very subject, and I don't think he would disagree with the force levels we have there that the secretary mentioned earlier. I think he's in agreement with General Casey and General Abizaid.
HUNTER: I thank the gentlelady.
The Democrats have a pathetically shallow bench. I'm afraid the next level down is the intellectual basement and Janeanne Garofalo.
The level of discourse is pathetic.
(Yikes! This is the second thread I got to say "poop" on. Thanks, Democrats!)
Gee what happened between Dec and feb?
Perhaps it was that election thingy?
Just more proof that Democrats are well schooled in the art of lying. She was basically doing a nevil chamberlin by waiving the out dated paper in Rumsfeld's face.
She did not expect him to have the real numbers.
This is hilarious! What did Sanchez do after she got the Rummy smackdown?
LOL!!!
Loretta "Dirty" Sanchez is no match for a very small very dumb flatworm.
