WASHINGTON - Fancy state dinners aren't all the new White House chef will need to do — the Bushes are looking for someone who knows barbecue and other good old American fare. 
Laura Bush told Newsweek she doesn't expect that any of the celebrity chefs with books or television shows will be interested in becoming head chef at the presidential home. But she's looking to fill the job with someone who "can really showcase American foods."
The previous White House chef, Walter Scheib III, has left to pursue new opportunities after nearly 11 years of cooking for two presidents, and the first lady is looking for a replacement who can cater to the first family's native Texan pallets.
"We like spicy food of all kinds," she said in the magazine's Feb. 28 issue. "We like, obviously, Tex-Mex and barbecue. ... George is a very good eater."
The chef will have ample opportunity to make dinner for the first family — the Bushes are known for staying in most nights rather than socializing like their predecessors. Laura Bush said they do go out to friends' dinner parties when someone thinks to ask them.
"We don't actually get invited to that many dinner parties," she said. "I think people think we're going to invite them, which we do."
So, Carlo has the White House contacted you yet??
Not to nit-pick, but the AP needs more proofreaders. In the phrase "native Texan pallets", the word should be "palates".

Yeah, I noticed that. I wondered how many 'pallets' they have laying around in the White House. Maybe in the warehouse.

I think it would make a great statement to go with the mix of American classics and modern fusion cuisine that is so prevalent in this country as the menu at the White House, prepared by an Asian American from Texas.

Well I like barbecue, too, same as any other red-blooded American.
But there ain't gonna be any GREAT dinner parties in the White House until we elect our first hunky president. Go ahead, do the research... when was the last time pierogi was on the White House menu??? Sheeesh, these people don't know what good home cookin' really IS!!!!
I confess. I'm having a dinner party Tuesday night and I forgot to ask them. Ratso! I missed my chance. But they're going to be out of town anyway.
This article tells me a lot about those two. When the WAshington gig is up, its back to the country where they feel more comfortable......Just plain good folks.....

You're right...husband and I were kicking ourselves for not buying stock in MSO when we considered it back in Nov '03. We've never played the market but that would've been a good risk...she'll be bigger than ever if she plays it smart and doesn't pretend she was a political prisoner.
I too have got some great dishes for them when they accept my invitation. I’ll go to the local supermarket; and from the frozen food section, I’ll purchase a couple of packages of Chicken a la Milanesa (precooked), tortillas ready to fry, and a large package of frozen peas. I’ll have the maid make up a batch of mashed potatoes (maybe the instant type to make things easy) and Mrs. Smith’s pumpkin pie.
But first I have to get a maid. Help is so hard to find.

Hmm. Bar B Que brisket, tater salad, frijole beans, tostadas, stuffed sopapillas, enchiladas, chimichungas, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, grilled stuffed pork chops, eggrolls, won ton soup, sweet & sour pork, beef & broccoli, 4 cheese lasagna, spaghetti & meatballs, ravioli, plus all kinds of breads, biscuits, rolls, cakes, pies & puddings! .......
Nah, I HATE big cities. :)
