'Dean Scream' clip was media fraud
By Edward Wasserman
SPECIAL TO THE MIAMI HERALD
The news media got an unusual bashing during last year's bitter electoral campaigns. They got slapped around from all sides, and everybody argued about how the media tried either to undermine Bush or discredit Kerry or both.
Still, it's never clear why some media wrongs are made into a big deal while others slip by. Take the CBS "60 Minutes" report on Bush's military nonservice: The story itself was old, the dubious evidence was of dubious importance, and the broadcast had no discernible effect. It became a major scandal anyway.
On the other end of the scale is an instance of clear-cut media wrongdoing that involved unquestionably fraudulent evidence and had dramatic consequences. This one, however, has gone largely unremarked. It is the famous incident involving Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean that is known as The Dean Scream.
And with Dean's recent appointment as Democratic Party chairman it's being hauled out as constituting the ceiling on whatever political ambitions he might still have, proof that he's shaky, unstable, unfit to serve - Howard Dean's Chappaquiddick. ---snip---
Unfortunately for the spinners, the tapes still exist, and Mr. Dean's maniacal scream will continue to haunt him.
Dan Quayle is amused.
Can someone explain how this makes things any different?
It wasn't his volume, it was his behaviour.
I think all the networks need to start playing it again so we can all hear it again and make up our own minds.
Later today we'll read that it was Karl Rove who told the media to play the Dean Scream.
We were always at war with Eurasia...
Hmmm...one of the "premier" news organizations, in coordination with the chariman of the DNC, comes up with obviously forged documents, designed to sink the President, never acknowledging that they are fraudulent, still sticking by the story, for days on end...and that's not a big deal??!??
Consider the source of the article.
the dean scream will always be with me.
every time i get an email i hear that famous "YEEEEAAAHHH!!!"
The difference is that a major network tried to influence the election with fraudlent doucments whereas Dean was already finished after his piss-poor showing in Iowa.
hahahahaha!...if it is his "Chappaquiddick"...he'll be a powerful force in government forever. Hahahaha!
FMCDH(BITS)
The scream speaks for itself. I still hear it and think that a lunatic like Dean was seriously being considered by a major party to lead this country.
You pretty much nailed it.
Wasserman has a long history of pushing the gay agenda and finding excuses for vile gay behavior. So is he a metrosexual or a Gay, who hates conservatives and is trying to revise history for Dean?

Most people, when the crowd is too loud, wait for a chance to speak... or simply say nothing.
Dean screamed.
Spin it anyway you want.
Dean screamed.
He looked like a madman and acted like a madman.
everybody argued about how the media tried either to undermine Bush or discredit Kerry or both.
In fact the Dean Scream was a fraud, probably the clearest instance of media assassination in recent U.S. political history.
Didn't Dean already come in 3rd in Iowa before the scream happened?
So a network forging documents to beat a seated president is not as big a story a liberal self destructing after already loosing major primaries.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
I saw the Dean Scream live on TV, no media fraud about it. He went goofy, first with the listing of the states like some wierd 2nd grade geography test, then the mighty pirate yell. Doesn't matter how loud it was in there, he went goofy. It was kind of cool, I'd never watched someone destroy their political career live before.
"Seared into your memory", no doubt.
I think you're right. But the article is merely
Mr. Wasserman's OPINION..so here's mine!
IF that scream clip, as we saw it with all his Dem buddies
behind him applauding and smiling over the din of
the audience, was all faked or modified, then Dean is
an even bigger FOOL for not having immediately called
for a public apology/explanation of how he had been
"demonized." In fact, I heard Dean in a later LIVE
TV statement admit he let the excitement of the moment
carry him away in a sea of emotion.
Nice try, Mr. Wasserman. The American public's memory
is not THAT short!
LOL! Magnificent....
Who are you going to believe? The Legacy Media, or your LYING EYES?????
Everything that article talks about is true. The one thing that it leaves out, is that we live in the age of the 24hr television news cycle. Any candidate who forgets that, ties their own noose.
Duh, one salient point. At the time of the 'scream', Dean was done. He was toast. He had the big L on his head. He was 'stick a fork in him' done!
Everyone knew this. The networks knew it, the polls knew it and most importantly, Dean knew it. Why waste time sabotaging his campaign, when it was already over?
The scream speach was his attempt to keep his troops pumped up on the false hope he could salvage the race in New Hampshire, or South Carolina, or Michigan, or Washington...
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhh
Hah! The real Chappaquiddick involved a drunk Senator, a car accident, a death and a coverup.
Dean's scream, while damaging to Dean's campaign, can hardly be compared to the criminal escapades of Teddy.
As any audiophile or audio tech will tell you, the best sound recordings come when the equipment has unimpeded access to the source. The MSM replaying audio from the screamer, faithfully reproduces the noise he made. Recording the broadcast sound from the floor of the meeting room would have been worthless from a news standpoint. The story was not the crowd, the story was Dean speaking to his supporters. Duh, you liberals.
I did not think it was that big of a deal since it seemed like a very human emotion. I can't stand Dean's politics, but he is more real in terms of personality than many of the other pols.
Let's show it 700 times every year!
Let's remember that speach came after a huge upset loss that probably doomed his candidacy - that is why the media jumped on it - they knew he was over.
Well, he is now the Party's new Spirtual Leader.
Yes, the Dean rehabilitation tour continues.
Exactly so!

Dean himself never claimed the tape was a fraud; he just complained that it got too much play. Dan Quayle should send his condolences.
"The media would not normally report anything that damages a Democrat. Here however, larger forces were at work. Shooting down Dean was supposed to help the Democrat party so the exception was allowed. Now that Dean is the (hate-filled) face of the party, the MSM has to undo the damage."
I think you have nailed it!
Did I miss something? Was there any attempt by the MSM to discredit Kerry?
I love it when these "so-called real journalists" write like this or make statements like this. Don't they realize that we see through these fradulent statements? Either they don't or they don't care...
The author misses the point.
Nobody is criticizing Dean's enthusiastic delivery of the list of states he intends to win. That he was wound up and in the context of screaming supporters is understood.
The criticism is of the scream - ambient noise or not, he went too far. Great leaders may yell at times, but they do not produce primordial screams in public.
Seared, SEARED (!) into my memory.
Was Stalin really a "bad guy" or just a "misunderstood huggy-bear?". We think the latter...
Other than trying to repair the Screamer... This author shows how big media thinks. He mismisses the Dan Rather screwup by saying it didn't even have an impact... It had no discernible effect. Oh, so if you lie and it doesn't have the intended effect, then it is OK. What if that story wasn't discredited so quickly and Bush lost the election and then it was proven wrong. Would this guy have a felt any differently because it had a discernable effect?
It was Karl Rove, backstage, with a Mr. Microphone!
Funny as hell to click and go to the source. The ad on the page is so appropriate.
My first reaction is "so?" But then I remembered the maniacal look on his face. Are they going to claim the video was tampered with too?
They are just in denial. Of course, a tape made in the midst of the mayhem by a supporter would drown him out. The media was probably better equipped and better situated to get a true representation. What does it matter that the crowd was loud...he still yelled and had that nutty uncontrolled whoop at the end.
Not only the tapes, but so many remixes on the internet. It was hilarious.
Boortz has a link to the Dean Car Alarm.
Its something that is ingrained in Americana now. My kids'll see it on the History Channel.
lol
