The Making Of A 9/11 Republican
SFGate ^ | 2/25/05 | Cinnamon Stillwell

But more than anything, it was the left's hypocrisy when it came to the war on terrorism that made me turn rightward after 9/11. I remember, back in my liberal days, being fiercely opposed to the Taliban and its brutal treatment of women. Even then, I felt that Afghanistan should immediately be liberated, as Malcolm X once said in another context, by any means necessary. But when it came time, it turned out that the left was mostly opposed to such liberation, whether of the Afghan people or of the Iraqis (especially if America and a Republican president were at the helm

Read the article. She makes that point (or something close to it) herself.

I've often heard of people having epiphanies and becoming republican, but I have nevery honestly heard it from the other way around.

I agree. I was also raised in a family of New England liberals and now I'm a proud Republican. I've heard of socially liberal Republicans becoming socially liberal Democrats, but I've never heard of anyone going from conservative to liberal although the reverse happens all the time.

That was quite a good article - I've often asked my liberal coworkers, as the author asked herself, "If America is such a horrible place, why do thousands risk their lives to be here?"

Of course, all I get after that is sputtering and "Bush lied!"

Anyway, got a link tot he DUmmy thread? Would love to see that, but their site is a mess to navigate...much like the liberal thought process! Go figure!

I was a Democratic more left-leaning liberal type before 911.  That day changed my thinking forever but I still considered myself a Democrat.

The way the left acted since that day has been atrocious.  I remember about a week after 911 the videos of the planes crashing into the towers ceased on CNN, ABC,CBS,NBC, etc and only shown again in tiny brief clips.  At this point I had doubts as to whether "left" thinking was for me.

Despite the ban on the 911 videos being show on TV, because it was "too disturbing", I was treated to the images of the so-called abuse in Abu Ghraib, ad nauseum, for months and months.   This non-story was treated as a greater attrocity to mankind than the Holocaust.

Than came the Kerry campaign, I was disgusted by this traitorous wimp and knew I HAD to vote Bush in or we were doomed.  The way the MS treated Kerry turned my stomach.

I now have no doubt I can never go back to ever thinking like that again.

My epiphany was the LA riots. When Maxine Waters and the Dems were rationalizing that behavior, I suddenly started to pay attention.

It is a process that comes with age, and is sometimes a slow realization that the left is morally bankrupt.

Another incident with me was Clarence Thomas hearings, and hearing the feminists wishing for Rush to have a heart attack.

I did not know who he was, and thought "what a horrible thing to say", so I tuned him in, got mad at him telling women to "put down their people mags, and read a paper", and then realized he was right.

".. but I still considered myself a Democrat..."

I don't mean to be obtuse or argumentative here, but I wonder how you can identify with a party that you clearly believe isn't operating in your best interests...

I cannot imagine what it must be like to be liberal. To be that deluded is a staggering thought.

Wow! Some of them finally get it!

and was once told that those with European origins such as myself couldn't really be Jewish.

I'm of European stock and have nothing Jewish about me, but that doesn't stop me from supporting Israel for political reasons.

I wonder if President Bush's 3.5 million vote margin is solely the responsibility of the so called '911-Republicans'. Wouldn't that be a kick in the teeth for the LLL? ROFL

Godspeed
