Senate approves naming road after Reagan

By SARI KRIEGER skrieger@potomacnews.com Friday, February 25, 2005

Area drivers may soon find themselves on Ronald Wilson Reagan Memorial Highway. The Senate voted 25 to 15 on Thursday to approve HB 1656, submitted by Delegate L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Dale City. The bill designates Va. 234 between U.S. 1 and Interstate 66 as the "Ronald Wilson Reagan Memorial Highway." The House of Delegates also approved the bill, and it now awaits the governor's signature.

"I am pleased the Senate passed the bill designating 234 as the Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway," said Lingamfelter, who also represents Quantico and eastern Fauquier. "This is a fitting tribute to a great president who had a tremendous impact on the lives of citizens of Prince William [County] and the lives of freedom-loving people everywhere."

Overall, this bill was supported 129-15 (8-0 County Board of Supervisors; 96-0 House of Delegates; 25-15 State Senate.) The Senators who voted against the bill were: Colgan, Deeds, Edwards, Houck, Howell, Lambert, Locke, Lucas, Marsh, Miller, Puckett, Puller, Saslaw, Ticer, Whipple

Now we just have to make sure that Governor Doofus signs the bill instead of vetoing it. We're only at 63% in the Senate on this bill, so it looks like we would fall short of an override on a veto.

To be fair, Colgan did say:

"I do not in any way mean to insult the name of Ronald Reagan," Colgan said. "But I wish it was a larger road and more significant road that could be named in his honor."

However, Route 234 is being expanded (with the project nearing completion) to become a four-lane divided highway that connects I-95 to I-66. I'd call that a large and significant road. I wonder what the excuses were of the others, including my own senator, the widow Puller.

Okay, so you've already got one, but you're in California Reagan Country already. We're in Virginia, so we'll take whatever we can get with his name on it. It is nice to think that soon my exit on I-95 and directions to my house will include Reagan's name, though.

FYI, only one VA State Senate Dem voted for the Reagan bill. Senator Wm. Roscoe Reynolds, Democrat - District 20.

15 out of the 16 members of the Senate Democrat caucus are just that petty.....
