(Hunter) Thompson Shot Himself While on Phone
AP (via Yahoo News) ^ | Feb 25, 2005

Posted on 02/25/2005 12:25:26 PM PST by Mr. Mojo

ASPEN, Colo. - The widow of journalist Hunter S. Thompson said her husband killed himself while the two were talking on the phone.

"I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and he did it. I heard the clicking of the gun," Anita Thompson told the Aspen Daily News in Friday's editions.

She said her husband had asked her to come home from a health club so they could work on his weekly ESPN column — but instead of saying goodbye, he set the telephone down and shot himself.

Thompson said she heard a loud, muffled noise, but didn't know what had happened. "I was waiting for him to get back on the phone," she said.

Hunter Thompson, famous for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and other works of New Journalism, shot himself in the head Sunday in the kitchen of his Aspen-area home. He was 67.

His son, daughter-in-law and 6-year-old grandson were in the house when the shooting occurred.

Anita Thompson, 32, said her husband had discussed killing himself in recent months and had been issuing verbal and written directives about what he wanted done with his body, his unpublished works and his assets.

His suicidal talk put a strain on their relationship, she said.

"He wanted to leave on top of his game. I wish I could have been more supportive of his decision," she said. "It was a problem for us."

Gee let's see here. If my wife ever even entertains the idea of killing herself the guns go away and I get her some help immediately.....
I wonder why this didnt happen in this case?

I heard Rush's guest host talking about this guy today. What a headcase. After listening to what the guy had to say about Bush, I'd say we dodged the bullet when he only decided to commit suicide. He sounds like the kind of guy who would try to take a few other people out as well.

Sadly, selfish. . .the least he could have done; was to get up out of his favorite chair and go into the woods; where the children would not have seen/heard or been a part of this in any way.

Interesting the interview as found on Drudge reads a bit differently on some details; not much; but more in depth, as well, albeit mostly about her. . .

This loser was a first class selfish a$$hole right up to his last losing act:

"She said her husband had asked her to come home from a health club so they could work on his weekly ESPN column — but instead of saying goodbye, he set the telephone down and shot himself."

"Thompson said she heard a loud, muffled noise, but didn't know what had happened. "I was waiting for him to get back on the phone," she said."

"Hunter Thompson, famous for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and other works of New Journalism, shot himself in the head Sunday in the kitchen of his Aspen-area home. He was 67."

"His son, daughter-in-law and 6-year-old grandson were in the house when the shooting occurred."

What a terrible thing to do to his wife, son, DIL and his six year old grandson. May he spend eternity in hell for his last act of moral insanity.

Perhaps it was an accident then. Maybe he was just going to handle the gun as he talked to her. He could have had it loaded and ready for when he acutally was going to commit suicide, but didn't mean to do it at that very minute.

What an a**hole. What a mean thing to do, and with a child in the house no less. Here, since I am going to put myself out of my misery, I think I shall do it in such a way as to cause as much pain and suffering to others as I possibly can.

Hate to say it, but the world is better off without people like that.

The fact he shot himself in the mouth kinda makes that very unlikely.

He probably picked up the wrong item after taking a hit of crystal-meth and pressed the wrong 'talk' button.

"...Muffled bang..."

Means he screwed the muzzle right onto his noggin or put it in his mouth. The exploding gasses from the cartridge added to the effect of the projectile making the mess he made even greater.

Sad for the family, that's about it.

Thompson's biographer E Jean Carroll described his routine: "3pm rise. 3.05 Chivas Regal with the morning papers, Dunhills. 3.45 cocaine. 3.50 another glass of Chivas, Dunhill. 4.15 cocaine. 4.54 cocaine. 5.05 cocaine... 9pm starts snorting cocaine seriously. 10pm drops acid. 11pm Chartreuse, cocaine, grass. 11.30 cocaine, etc, etc... 12.05 to 6am Chartreuse, cocaine, grass, Chivas, coffee, Heineken, clove cigarettes, grapefruit, Dunhills, orange juice, gin, continuous pornographic movies.

Her story keeps changing. Earlier, Rocky Mountain News had a report quoting her as saying she heard the phone line click off and that she DID NOT hear any gunshot at all. That same report said she and other family members gathered 'round the table for drinks while his dead body was still there. Weird stuff.
