Schumer questions Saudi link to school (the Islamic Saudi Academy in Virginia, "Jihad High")

WASHINGTON - The federal indictment of a graduate of a Saudi-backed Islamic school in suburban Virginia for plotting to kill President Bush is the latest example of the school's links to troubling activity, Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., charged on Wednesday.

Schumer said he is asking Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, to explain where the school receives all of its funding, and whether the school may be "a breeding ground for anti-American sentiment - and, possibly even terrorist activities." It has been widely reported the school receives substantial funding from the Saudi kingdom.

Schumer referred to the Islamic Saudi Academy of Alexandria, Va. A recent graduate from there, Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, was indicted Tuesday on a charge of helping to plot an assassination of President Bush while Abu Ali was a student in Saudi Arabia.

In his letter to Prince Bandar, Schumer cited three other instances where persons associated with the school were involved in controversial activities. They are:

Schumer, a member of the Judiciary Committee, has also asked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to investigate the school's funding.

Meanwhile, Abu Ali should be held indefinitely, federal prosecutors said Wednesday in court filings that also rejected his contention that he was tortured while held in Saudi Arabia.

Abu Ali never complained about his treatment during several meetings with an American diplomat in Saudi Arabia, according to the filing. Moreover, an American doctor examined him Monday and found "no evidence of physical mistreatment."

Edward MacMahon, one of Abu Ali's lawyers, said Wednesday he had not seen the government's motion and declined to comment. But on Tuesday, both MacMahon and defense lawyer Ashraf Nubani had said they had seen the scars on his back. Nubani said they looked like whip marks.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Since Ali also had a secret Jordanian citizenship, the finding probably comes from Islamists in both Jordan and Saudi.

The Saudis probably wouldn't have kept him in custody or turned him over to the US if they had any reason to believe the royal family could be proven guilty of knowing wrongdoing.

Chuckie needs to stop grandstanding on this one.

Maybe not. Since Wahhabism rules every facet of their lives in Saudi Arabia, it skews their judgement, since most likely every school in Saudi Arabia has a similar curriculum. So to them, the Islamic Saudi Academy is a normal school.

As for the funding, since there are buffers between buffers within so many of these "charities," not a lot of people there know "what's what."

Yeah, I know Schumer's the king of pork barrel spending and a big lib, but even a broken clock is right two times a day, as the expression goes.

Agreed with both of you...but IMO, he needs to stop grandstanding.

Don't forget that he was arrested by Saudi security for his part in a firefight and was discovered to be plotting to assassinate the president of the United States. Have no doubt that Chuckie's not the only one interested in where the schools funding comes from. He's just the only one using it to build a political platform from which to attack Republicans. I doubt his concern is sincere. I KNOW that all of our intelligence assets are in some way working on this case.

"What's happened to all the Repubicrats?"

Oh, we're swilling kafé and playing tiddlywinks with the Saudi royals and other Big Oil bigwigs while plotting the next attack to bring in more oil to feed our energy profit addiction.

Hey, Chuck, what's your rush? It's only been three and a half years since the Saudi hijackers mass-murdered over 3000 people on US soil.

No, I am not exaggerating. Click the pic, go to "last," and read backwards.
If you aren't informed about this stuff, you will be made sick. If you are informed, you will be made mad, all over again.
