It really hasn't worked though - my personal liberties have been severly impinged in the last 20 years with no way to counteract it. No more self-loading rifles because of a scare, no more handguns because of a scare. I have never hunted with hounds but I sympathise with those do - they have no voice.

It is tyranny.

Mike Jerrik on Fox and Friends Sunday summed it up perfectly when he asked...

"Have you heard about the Bride of Chucky?"

Many countries go through and abandon leftist madness. We had nationalisation, then we had privatisation, for example. I do not see how having an elected head of state as opposed to Her Majesty would assist in this.

A republic would instill the attitude in people that the law of the land is their responsibilty, not something handed down from the Lord of the Manor.

"Who cares what the 'royalty' of England does or says."

I Agree.

When my son visited his distant relatives in England (mother's side), he said it was to crowded and class conscience. Americans aren't big on royalty and class.

A nice idea, but the practical truth is that an elected head of state would attract the type of politicans who are into pomp without circumstance...such as Jeffrey Archer.

Our constitution is the product of over 1000 years of history - you trifle with that at your peril.

We don't have a constitution which can be effectively used to defend a citizen's rights.

Again, how does getting rid of the monarchy in any way assist with this?

It's a pre-requisite to drafting a constitution of general rights that hereditary rights are rescinded.

You really want a constitutional convention in which Tony Blair, Michael Howard and Charles Kennedy are the likely major parties to it? Thanks, I'd rather stick with our long traditions than trust our future to those fools.

...but this "quote" sounds so unlikely that I have to wonder if it was completely fabricated.

There is no way that Prince Charles would make such a statement. His ex-wife was boorish and stupid enough, but under no circumstance would he stoop to such base talk.

Ugh No.

Why would a simple referendum be wrong? I would only be in favour of a figurehead President. I really don't see why any democratic system needs more than one chamber.

It's evident that our system doesn't work. I know you've just moved out of London and your peddling this English Red State spiel but let me tell you Jolly Old England is no more. We are being overrun.

Yep, giving up your guns was your last hope for liberty. Soon the government will enslave you and turn the whole island into one big prison camp. You have nothing left to resist your own government.

We don't have much of our constitution left either due to the leftist judges.

A vote is still a pretty powerful thing. It seems that a blog can have some power also.

"...I don't want Charles as King..."

Really??! How unbritish! Seems that you mutated into a real republican since this is "freerepublic". Anyhow - continetal Europe can't wait to see our friends from the island kissing Englands new rose:

"And guardian angels sang this strain: Rule, Britannia! Britons never will be slaves."

Let's hope that Britons won't be slaves to the coverage their yellow press for the next 20 years. ;-)

BTW - although I do not like my gouvernment, I prefer the fast changing sexy girlies of Joschka Fischer and Gerhard Schröder. In fact Joschka ist the most important representant of my country. We have a president too, but his appearance in public is very seldom. In Germany he is called the "Grüßaugust" ("Greeting August") with no real function.
