Abbas: 'Peace is possible'

Palestinian conference set for Tuesday in London

Attacks such as Friday's suicide bombing "will not be tolerated" by the new Palestinian leadership, Abbas said.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said he believes peace with Israel is possible -- but that an end to violence is a "mutual commitment" -- ahead of a conference designed to build support for the new Palestinian leadership.

Abbas' comments were published Monday in Britain's Independent newspaper after a suicide bombing outside a Tel Aviv beachfront nightclub Friday killed five people and injured at least 65.

"We have an opportunity and it would be irresponsible if we, the Israelis, or the world allow it to slip away," Abbas was quoted as saying in the interview, which was conducted by e-mail.

Abbas has not done the one thing that would convince Israelis that he is serious about peace. He must crack down on the various factions carrying out terrorist attacks. Unless he does this and recognizes Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state then peace is not possible.

Abbas is not the leader of the Palestinians--if he does not speak for them nor if they do not do what he says they will do. That is not a leader.

He is the new Media Mouthpiece that the PA needs to fill the airwaves with Islamic slop. Call for a "cease-fire" and use the situation to attack the unsuspecting, trusting enemy. That is a Muslim's version of a "fair fight". The same as what the US got with the "cease-fires" in Najaf.

Islam's definition of peace is people submitting to the will of the group with the biggest sword. That is Islamic Peace.

Of course peace is possible as long as of all Israel is given up and the Jews driven to the sea. If Israel is not willing to do that it is obivious that they are not committed to the peace process! / sarcasm off in case you did not know I was being sarcastic

Abu Allah is rumoured to resign in the next few days because of his lack of ability to form a govt in the Palestinian regions.

Abbas fires three security chiefs after militants violate truce
Gulf-news / Reuters ^ | 2/11/05

Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas fired three security chiefs yesterday after militants, defying his truce with Israel, launched mortar bombs at Jewish colonies and gunmen raided a Gaza jail.

A Palestinian security official said Abdul Razeq Al Majaydeh, public security chief for the West Bank and Gaza, National Police Chief Saeb Al Ajez and Omar Ashour, commander of the security forces in the southern Gaza Strip, were dismissed.

"Abu Mazen (Abbas) was angered by the mortar fire and the jail attack," the official said, citing a "security deterioration" in the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, Hamas militants launched mortar bombs at Jewish colonies in the Gaza Strip, the first sustained firing since Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon proclaimed a truce at a summit in Egypt on Tuesday.

Hamas said it was responding to the Israeli army's killing of a Palestinian near a Gaza colony on Wednesday.

In an incident yesterday, dozens of Palestinian gunmen burst into a Gaza prison and killed three inmates in what police described as score-settling between feuding clans.

The dismissals were announced hours after Abbas ordered security forces to enforce the ceasefire.

Why do you say that? From what I understand this was done by a group out of Syria.

Peace is possible when the last jihadist has reached room temperature. Until then, don't hold your breath..

Abbas is in a situation I would not want.. I do think he would like peace, but if he oversteps his bounds to achieve it, HAMMAS will simply kill him....

We will see how it goes.

The bomber himself was from the West Bank!

Abbas did not stop him from getting into Israel and most likely helped him.

Abbas is playing the same game Arafat played so dont be fooled!

Arafat was never interested in peace.. he was a terrorist to his core... Peace was just words for him.. I don't know if Abbas is cut from the same mold as Arafat or not... but clearly there was never going to be peace as long as Arafat breathed.

Time will tell on Abbas.

Abbas founded Fatah in 1965!

Abbas helped finance the Munich attacks in 1972!

Abbas was Arafats right hand mand!

That is 3 strikes right their. Abbas has the same history as Arafat their is no difference. Allowing this "Peace Process" to continue will only lead to more dead Jews.

"Abbas says 'peace is possible'."

Feh, yeah right! Tell that to the families and friends of the victims of last Friday's tragedy, "mister" Abbas! Abbas shucks , jives, and lies like an upline at an Amway convention. Peace will come only when the last jihadist or whatever those serpents call themselves this week are finally, completely, and totally convinced that only when a very hot place freezes will Israel ever disappear. Until that gets deeply ingrained in to the gray matter of every no-count, low-life martyr-for-Allah-Fubar nutcase.

I'm sure he does think peace is possible. That is, after Israel is pushed into the sea.

Thus far, he has been consistent in saying that he's not going to confront them, but try to "bring them into the political process." </barf>
