Ancient Earth Drawings Found in Peru

By Associated Press

LIMA, Peru -- Archaeologists have discovered a group of giant figures scraped into the hills of Peru's southern coastal desert that are believed to predate the country's famed Nazca lines.

About 50 figures were etched into the earth over an area roughly 90 square miles near the city of Palpa, 220 miles southeast of Lima, El Comercio newspaper reported.

The drawings -- which include human figures as well as animals such as birds, monkeys, and felines -- are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture sometime between 600 and 100 B.C., Johny Islas, the director of the Andean Institute of Archaeological Studies, told the newspaper.

One prominent figure appears to represent a deity commonly depicted on textiles and ceramics from the period, Islas said.

The drawings have been interpreted as blaming George Bush for global warming.

The Nazca lines were "discovered" soon after the invention of aircraft.

It really took 90 additional years to "find" these?

Something doesn't "compute".

LOL. When I first read the title, I thought they had drawn a picture of the whole earth...or something like that.

"are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture"

Hmmm ... I thought Steve J Gould said that it was a fact that line drawings had evolved from geological physical and chemical dynamics. Here we have purported scientists heretically claining some sort of intelligent designers. Very confusing.

" are believed to be created by members of the Paracas culture sometime between 600 and 100 B.C."

That's not very old. There are people still living in houses in the Middle East that were built about that time.

The Pyramids are about twice that old and are substantially more complex than some stick figures scratched into rock.

The Paracan script is extremely hard to decipher, but I've managed to translate a few lines:

"For a good time, drag Hillancestress-kicking and screaming- from her rock shelter."

"I did not (Snicker !)have sex with that cavewoman.." (Rest of line is blurry:Mon ? Mons? Mon...lew ?)

There needs to be a Rule on "visual" stories, similar to the Ann Coulter rule: PICTURES!

Opps; now I'm in violation since I don't have any pics of her to post...especially not in archeologist's garb. Damn!

Seriously, I'd like to know a LOT more about this.

>>One prominent figure appears to represent a deity commonly depicted on textiles and ceramics from the period, Islas said.<<

Couldn't the paper at least ID this 'commonly depicted diety'? When did they discover this? When/where is it being published? How does this culture relate to the Nazca? How do these figures compare in subject, treatment, size, & execution to the Nazca?

Oh, and did I mention PICTURES?

Ancient, Giant Images Found Carved Into Peru Desert

Gonzalo Castillero
Efe

October 8, 2002
Human and animal likenesses, a knife, and a sundial are among the "geoglyphs," or giant figures etched into the earth and discernible from the sky, most recently discovered in the Peruvian desert.

Peruvian archaeologist Johny Islas and German colleague Markus Reindel have identified new etchings made by the ancient Nasca people in the desert valleys of Palpa, about 460 kilometers (290 miles) south of Lima.

After five years of work, the scientists were able to identify more than 1,000 new geoglyphs.
[snip]

Google is my friend. Had no idea this was from 2 1/2 years ago, just hitting newspapers.

It is old for America. There isn't much really old stuff except for some hunting camps.

Had no idea this was from 2 1/2 years ago, just hitting newspapers.

The Nat'l Geo story you linked is about a different group of drawings--credited to the Nascan people. The posted story is about a group of drawings thought to be made by the Paracas culture and are thought to predate the Nascan.

But thanks for the link; I found both stories very interesting.

I thought that at first, too, until I checked dates of attribution. It looks like in the story I linked, Islas was dating the Nazcans as going back into the time period he is now attributing to the Paracas.

It looks like they are talking about the same figures, but have reevaluated culturally, and either split the Nazcas off as a separate group coming later; or decided that the Paracas were responsible rather than the Nazca, as originally stated.

I'll also admit I mave have misread the NG article four or five times.

Ok--went back & re-read & now I'm confused! But I think the Paracan stuff is a new discovery...it's in a different location & thought to be older. I can't help but wonder if these two cultures are the same people who just picked up & moved...or, as you said, some split off. Linking a site I found that has some info on the Paracas/ Nazca cultures...mostly photos of artifacts and a few links to other pages. The textiles & pottery are incredible.
