JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Former congresswoman Tillie Fowler passed away this morning, two days after suffering a brain hemorrhage.

According to co-workers, she suffered the brain hemorrhage at her home in Jacksonville Monday.

Fowler was at St. Vincent's hospital with her husband Buck by her side. Her daughters, Tillie Anne and Elizabeth, were also there.

Tillie Fowler graduated from Emory University, where she received both her B.A. and law degree. Before moving to Jacksonville in 1971, she served as a legislative assistant to U.S. Representative Robert G. Stephens, Jr. from Georgia and was General Counsel in the White House Office of Consumer Affairs.

She was such a joy to hear and term limited herself.

Which is a darned shame. She had a lot to offer.

May she rest in peace. Prayers for her and her family.

Yes. Such a sudden thing too!

She was a lady in a day and age when ladies, in that sense, are definitely not the norm.

She retired from Congress after four terms, sticking with a pledge she had made when first elected to only serve four terms. When she retired, Fowler was the most powerful woman in Congress -- vice chairwoman of the House Republican Conference and fifth in the GOP hierarchy.

May God rest her soul.

Congresswoman Fowler was a lady, intelligent and a staunch supporter of our military. Prayers for the repose of her soul and for her family and our nation.

I've met Tillie Fowler, she was a very dynamic and energetic woman. Very sad for her to die so young. I will keep her family in my prayers.

Very sad news, indeed. She was truly one of the good guys up on Capitol Hill during her tenture.

What a shame, she was a great representative for FL. I loved to listen to her speeches.

May God welcome her home. Good Job Tillie!

Very sad to learn of Mrs. Fowler's passing...and your mother's. Peace to you and the Fowler family.

If I may: what causes a brain hemorrage? Did Mrs. Fowler take a fall?

In my mothers case it was hereditary and waiting to happen but we did not know that until it happened. She had high blood pressure and suffered from "mini-strokes" for many years. Her own father died same way. On the day it happened she did n ot complain of headaches and was out chopping up some wood when she collapsed. She was found on a bench in garage so she was able to sit down. She was alive when found but went into coma very quickly and was brain dead on arrival to hospital. : ((
