Gaddafi says freedom must bloom in Libya

SIRTE, Libya (Reuters) - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi urged his people on Wednesday to let "freedoms blossom" but made no mention of democratic goals like political parties that the United States wants to promote in the Middle East.

Gaddafi, whose oil-rich country was a pariah state until he renounced weapons of mass destruction just over a year ago, branded the United States, Britain and Italy as dictatorships and invited them to learn "genuine democracy" in Libya.

Gaddafi was speaking on the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Libyan Jamahiriyah (popular republic), when Libyans were given the right to air their views at "people's congresses" in what Gaddafi defends as grass-roots democracy.

"You have to let freedoms blossom. People must have the full freedom to chose useful and fruitful work, the full freedom to learn and carry out scientific search and the freedom of faith," said Gaddafi, who came to power in a 1969 military coup, in a speech broadcast live on Libyan television.

Well it looks like Muammar is starting to feel the democracy winds that are hitting him for the first time ever.

See Lybia is free and democratic he says so. ha.

That's right Muammar. Get a "genuine democracy" going in Libya, that'll teach us to mess with you. You big strong man you.

Libya will be free when Gaddafi stands trial for blowing up Pan Am 107 over Lockerbie.

I don't buy his talk for a second either. Reagan basically killed part of his family in that bombing. There's no way he's turned pro-American.

Once a badly-dressed wackjob with a tenuous connection to reality who had to have a few bombs dropped on him to force him into getting in line before he helped blow up a plane and had to pay restitution and renounce terrorism while still being a lunatic, always a badly-dressed wackjob with a tenuous connection to reality who had to have a few bombs dropped on him to force him into getting in line before he helped blow up a plane and had to pay restitution and renounce terrorism while still being a lunatic.

I hate to disagree with someone when they are trying to agree with me but ...

I think he means it and I'm begging him to NOT throw us into that Briar Patch.

Without action it means little BUT it is indication what is occuring in the heart of the M.E. is being felt enough elsewhere that he had the need to pander to the idea.

Well, they used to have Catherine Deneuve, but she's a bit long in the tooth. Sophie will prevent me from pushing the LAUNCH button. For now.

When she's next out of the country on a film shoot, though... :D

Nah. What he calls "freedom" is freedom from making decisions, freedom from traveling, freedom from unhealthy Western attitudes; freedom from the corruption of the Internet and Sat. TV, etc.

You know, the freedom of someone in a dictatorship to have any control over one's life.

Gaddafi doesn't strike me as one who cares much about paying lip service. Maybe he sees the inevitable staring him in the face.

Boy, the bad news for the Democrats just keeps rolling in, doesn't it? First Afghanistan, then Iraq, then the Palestinians and now rumblings of democracy in Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon. We'll have to put the Democrats on suicide watch if the situation improves any more.
