Journalist shooting stirs Italian anger

ROME Mar 5, 2005 — Italy demanded answers Saturday as former hostage Giuliana Sgrena was taken off a flight from Iraq wrapped in a plaid blanket and hooked to an intravenous drip for a shoulder wound inflicted when American troops fired on a car taking her to the Baghdad airport. The Italian agent who negotiated her freedom was hit and died in her arms.

The shooting at a U.S. checkpoint in Baghdad stoked anti-war sentiment in Italy, where the public was widely opposed to the government's decision to send 3,000 troops to help U.S.-led efforts to secure the country from a violent insurgency. President Bush promised a full investigation.

About 100 demonstrators outside the U.S. Embassy in Rome blocked traffic and one banner read: "USA, war criminals." A few dozen communist demonstrators at the U.S. Consulate in Milan handed out leaflets reading, "Shame on you, Bush."

[ . . . ]

"We thought the danger was over after my rescue," she told RAI News 24 television by telephone. "And instead suddenly there was this shooting, we were hit by a spray of fire. I was talking to Nicola … when he leaned over me, probably to defend me, and then he slumped over. That was a truly terrible thing."

remember these two

Stop it.  You're killing me.  LOL

No. don't stop.  Interesting, ominous connections, these are.  Fund raisers?

Here's the lead into what traderrob6 asks me to remember:

Italy's adoration of the "two Simonas", the women aid workers abducted in Iraq, began to sour yesterday, as the extent of their sympathy for the Iraqi fight against the allied occupation became clear.

In their first big interviews given since their release in return for a reported $1 million ransom on Tuesday, Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, both 29, gave their backing to insurgents opposing the allied forces.

Italians fall out of love with 'two Simonas'

Having liven in Italy for several years and returning on vacation frequently, the young left-wing fascist are at the bottom of this. They hate American and all we stand for as we defeated their God Communism. Since this reporter was released by the Arabs (after she faulted the US for the Iraq war) how do we know what she was up to? Why did the car not stop when ordered to do so? One does not try to run up on a check point when the evil devils are using car bombs to kill Americans.

When the car was ordered to stop, why didn't it stop?

A few dozen communist demonstrators

Typical. A few DOZEN commies and the MSM jumps on it.

Hey, it's war. You ignore the rules, - like not heeding the order to stop - and you pay the price. Nuff said.

As long as they don't try to pin the blame on our American military.

Giuliana Sgrena

I wish only this disgusting old b*itch had died, just like her terrorist brothers whom she so revered and praised in her Communist rag for 2 years.

It makes my heart sink that such a brave man should die protecting someone so unworthy of his sacrifice. My prayers go out for the family of this fine man. But my most bitter enmity and hopes for a slow and painful recovery go out to this scum of the earth Sgrena, who wrote thousands of words in praise of those who have the blood of our soldiers--and Italian soldiers too--on their hands.

The Italian people should be ashamed of themselves for honoring her in any way. She is a piece of excrement.

"We thought the danger was over after my rescue," she told RAI News 24 television by telephone.

...

It may be a stretch, but could it be that, thinking the danger was over, they were driving fast and furious like they were already back in Italy?

Tough sh*t! Speed into a checkpoint and get shot. Seems reasonable to me.

The Italian journalist is LYING!

It was an established checkpoint. The Italians should have known exactly what to do. There was no reason for them to run the checkpoint. Our men are easily recognizable - and surely the men in the car didn't believe we would stop the woman from being rescued.

When all the stories of the event match - except for the journalist - she will be shown for the liar she is. It was reported when they were bargaining for her that she was against the war .. so that will tell you she didn't have any regard for the American military.

Several lefty blogs which shall remain nameless are already pushing the idea that the military was told to snuff her. You know, Eason Jordan style

In any case, the Italians have nearly 3000 troops there...

So why didn't the Italians go get their 'journalist'.

What the hell the Nazis rescued Mussolini!

"She wasn't worth it."

Without foreknowledge that she was, in fact, a terrorist herself, one might take your comment as being completely insensitive and to a large extent, humanely appalling.

Speaking of "badass", rumor has it that the next installment of SOCOM: Navy SEALS for the playstation 2 has close supervision by none other than..surprise surprise..naval special command (i.e. the navy seals). :)

That is..if you like strategic video games.
