I just wanted to pass this along. Rosenthal is a great sports writer, but he has fallen for the same mistake that so many other reports have--he claimed that Sen. Joe McCarthy was the head of the House un-American Activities Committee. SENATOR--HOUSE, what's that Mr. Rosenthal?
It is pretty sad that Sen. McCarthy's name is continued to be dragged through the mud for something he was not a part of.
Here is an excerpt...

When Sen. Joe McCarthy ran the House Un-American Activities Committee, innocent people were stained by the mere request to testify. Without legitimately obtained evidence against suspected players, the same concept applies.

ANN COULTER REVEALS TRIP TO SENATOR MCCARTHY's GRAVE

Coulter Reveals Visit to Sen. McCarthy's Grave

Joe McCarthy died in 1957, long before Ann Coulter was born, and like most Americans her age, she grew up in an era where the widely accepted image of the Wisconsin senator was that of a man dedicated to the destruction of civil liberties and the slandering of the innocent.
But her careful research in preparation for her book "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism" taught her that this image was not only false but also defamed a man who sacrificed his career, and ultimately his life, in a courageous campaign to protect his nation from the treasonous activities of people acting solely in the interests of the Soviet Union, and against those of the United States.
In an upcoming exclusive interview with Phil Brennan for NewsMax magazine, Ann told Phil that in late May she journeyed to McCarthy's hometown of Appleton, Wisc., to pay honor to the memory of Sen. McCarthy by visiting his burial place.
She recalled her visit to the cemetery where the senator, a World War II Marine veteran, is buried.
"I was out in Appleton laying flowers on McCarthy's grave," she told NewsMax.com not long after returning from the trip.
"He was quite a man and the grave was fabulous. I was wondering how I'd find it, but as soon as I stepped out of the car at St. Mary's cemetery, McCarthy's gravestone was the first thing I laid eyes on.
"It's an imposing gravestone at the edge of the cemetery overlooking a lake. Apparently, his wife Jean is buried with her second husband - so there is Joe McCarthy, standing tall and brave, all alone still today.
"Now here's the interesting thing: As I drew closer, I saw something lying on top of his gravestone. From a distance it looked like an old horseshoe crab, and given the poppycock about McCarthy, at first I thought someone had defaced his grave.
"But when I was right on top of it, I saw that some appreciative American had left a cast image of the U.S. Marine's Eagle, Globe and Anchor [symbol] on top of Joe's grave."

Because SENATORS do not run HOUSE committees.
The guy is blaming him for running a HOUSE committee when McCarthy WAS NOT A HOUSE MEMBER - HE WAS A SENATOR.
Sen. McCarthy was right.
exactly. Every person McCarthy ever called a communist--was a communist!
So you think Gen. George C. Marshall was a communist?
Morons.
McCarthy was partly right, and for that he deserves our praise and admiration. However, he got carried away with the spotlight (and a drinking problem) and started making reckless charges. That's all the Dems and MSM needed to destroy him.
An earlier poster was right. Sports writers are a very liberal bunch. I wonder if it has something to do with wimpy men watching athletes in various states of undress. You know, maybe some kind of penis envy or homoerotic arousal.
Well, there IS a story there. You shouldn't be so quick to throw the "moron" label around.
I don't remember him saying Marshall was a communist. I know he was very critical of him, but can you provide me with a link on this statement that he called Marshall a communist?
Morons.
Is that an argument?
The writer of the story emailed me back. Here is what he said.
William,
Thanks for the note. I corrected the mistake to note that there were two different entities. You would be amazed by some of the E-mails I'm getting on this subject, accusing me of following a leftist agenda. A guy can't even screw up anymore without people ascribing sinister motives to it!
Thanks,
Ken
I know that McCarthy was right in what he did. I just don't know how history books keep saying he "Provided no evidence". I have read most of Treason, but maybe he didnt need any evidence..or am I wrong?
and...
George Catlett Marshall (1888-1959) was a failed Army man starting in 1902 until 1933 when he came under the protective wings of KGB "Agent 19" Harry Hopkins and pinko Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1933 he was promoted to Colonel. In 1939 he was appointed Chief of Staff and four-star General of the Army over more than 400 hundred more qualified and senior individuals. --GENERAL GEORGE C. MARSHALL, COMMUNIST (refers to McCarthy's accusations)
McCarthy's accusations are expressed here, in an online rendition of America's Retreat from Victory
The French always seem to try making things we do look like a waste of time and money. The Marshall Plan and how much we spent on them comes to mind.
I have had people try to lessen the value of these claims by saying something like "Even Lucile Ball was accused of being a commie by McCarthy". Well, as it turned out, she was. I loved to watch her on TV, but she registered to the communist party in the '30's. Poor judgment doesn't make you innocent. And McCarthy's drinking didn't make him wrong.
I shudder to think how much influence the communists have had on our society.
McCarthy never said one thing about communists in Hollywood. McCarthy was mostly concerned about communists in the military and gov't.
