I've just heard "You've got diabetes? Did you eat too much sugar?" one too many times from complete strangers.

I can see how that can get on your nerves but the public mainly knows about type 2 which can be caused by obesity etc
Why are complete strangers asking about your diabetes
If they are strangers how do they know you have it
If you are volunteering the information for whatever reason why not preface it with I have TYPE 1 Childhood diabetes

Yes, my son was diagnosed at age 8. He's now 37 and has a wife who adores him and a gorgeous child--all prayer answers (mine). A cure will come--though now is not soon enough. Love and prayers! ~SB

It usually happens when I'm picking up prescriptions at the pharmacy. They see the insulin and syringes and know someone that is diabetic so they want to talk about it. I don't mind being asked if I'm diabetic and discussing it with people, but I've come to resent ignorant questions like "Did you eat too much sugar?"

Thank you for your prayers. And you're right. Now isn't soon enough for a cure. I'm glad to hear that your son is doing well.

Well look on this aspect of the situation.
You have a chance to inform the uniformed and increase the medical knowledge of the general public
Might help alleviate the irritation

My son has had type 1 diabetes since he was five years old. He is now 21. We have been hearing this hype about a cure throughout his life. To say he has become cynical about a cure is an understatement. I have a feeling the drug companies (those who profit from all the paraphernalia required to manage the disease, as well as the insulin itself) have a vested interest in a cure NOT coming forth in the near future. Diabetes is huge business all over the world, and particularly in the US. The lack of real improvements in bloodless testing and other strides only makes our family more skeptical as time marches on. Of course, we always hope and pray for a cure, but we have become realistic about there actually being one around the corner. My sympathies to all those who suffer from, or have a loved one, affected by this insidious illness.

Believe me, I am always patient with people and I've tried to educate those that are misinformed. But some people are not capable of understanding, even after my explanations, so it gets frustrating. I've been diabetic for virtually my entire life, so I've seen a lot of eyes glaze over while I try to educate them as you've suggested. The people that I really like to talk to are the parents of new diabetics because I can offer them advice and explain what it's like from their child's perspective. I don't get to do that very often.

I hope it will work for type 1 also.
Type 1 is much the worse.
Adult onset or type 2 can be controlled by diet if a person finds it early.
