WASHINGTON — President Bush will nominate one of his closest longtime advisers to a key State Department post in an effort to help repair the United States' image abroad, especially in the Arab world, a senior administration official said Saturday.

-snip-

The official said that Hughes, 48, will spearhead the administration's campaign to promote democracy in the Middle East (search).

Karen Hughes, who for years has had a major voice in crafting Bush's domestic message, is a former counselor to the president who left the White House in 2002 to move her family back to Texas.

What do they mean "repair our image abroad?" What the heck did we do wrong? We liberate millions of people and we have to go around with the mea culpas? Hope this is just MSM spin.

I'm delighted about Hughes taking a more active position anywhere in the administration.

It's not what we've done, or haven't done, it's how bad our PR has been. The enemy has trashed our reputation with little or nothing being done by State to repair the damage done by enemies. WE invented marketing, yet we have failed miserably in projecting our TRUE image. In that vacumn, the other side has filled the vacumn with lies.

I think Karen Hughes was nominated to help repair the Arab world not our image there. She takes no prisoners.

And the government of Quatar sold Algezera saying they were getting so much heat in Washington that it was not worth it.

I have the impression that USIA was decimated and languishing, including VOA.

I had read yesterday that Karen was returning to Washington. But the State Dept...whoa! This is bound to add another twist to their already wadded up panties.

Which give me immense satisfaction, naturally.

It is exactly that kind of LIE that keeps me "in pajamas". I have a good heart, and I want to keep it that way. Because I'm getting older, it's important to keep my blood pressure from, you know, BOILING OVER!

Thanks for pointing out....what I too 'hope' is....only spin.

(and btw, welcome to FR if you haven't been already! AND, if you get the time, it'd be good of you to put sumpin' on your 'about' page...with a nic like that :)

I wonder whether a "senior administration official" actually said that this is part of an effort to "repair the United States' image abroad," or whether this is just an incredibly sloppy and biased statement by an AP reporter whose editor should be fired.

You have to understand that when Bush says we "have to repair our image", that means something altogether different from when the typical State Department representative makes a similar statement. "Repairing our image" once DID mean accepting the blame for all woes past and present, by a mea culpa statement conveying weakness and capitulation.

But George W. Bush does not capitulate, if anybody has been noticing. The repair to our image is more on the order of explaining a few facts of life, particularly to the various Arabic people around the globe. It will be up to Karen Hughes to prepare and polish up some of these statements intended to convey this new tone from Washington. And up to Dr. Condoleezza Rice to deliver the same.

¡Viva Condi!

Yo soy una CONDOLISTA.

Do I hear the pitter patter of rodent feet scampering about at the State Department?

Let me see, Condi, Bolton and now Hughes are all new appointees who believe in the US and what we stand for and will not back down. This has been a very good six weeks.

Thats the ticket, either one.

Yes, I immediately thought (as I watched her today) the possibility that she is being "groomed" for the 2008 POTUS election.

Hughes has no "baggage;" is admittedly a great communicator (even the Democrats recognize and have agreed on that), and has both extreme intelligence and a clam, sensible demeanor. She has a persona that reminds one of a combination of everybody's favorite aunt, a trusted mentor, and a successful corporate executive.

She is neither glamorous, nor unattractive; a fashion plate, nor dowdy. There is no pretense -- Hughes projects a solid, self-confident, no-nonsense image.

The extraneous, petty attacks on one's hairstyles, wardrobes, figure, etc. that are often a detriment to females in government (in particular), would not be an issue with Hughes. It is just so obvious that there is great depth of character with this lady, which is more important to consider. She can hold her own with the big bad guys, and make them mind their manners at the same time. She simply does not elicit their petty attacks based on frivolous, materialistic, aspects, nor tolerate their tantrums.

The future of Karen Hughes will be very interesting to watch.

This is not to take anything away from Condi. The two women complement each other, and they have an obviously respect for the other’s qualities and capabilities. Together during this administration they will be a formidable force. In the future - either separately or jointly - they will present a formidable challenge.
