A man apparently enraged by a Bush-Cheney sticker on a woman's sport utility vehicle chased her for miles and tried to run her off the road while holding up an anti-Bush sign, said police in Tampa, Fla.

"He told our officers that he just got mad at her, so he went after her," said police spokesman Joe Durkin.

You have to be a paying member to use the search function...

Not surprised the blame was placed on the woman and they also probably said "this stuff happens to Dems all the time, but the Corporate Right Wing media ignores it."

I agree that what this man did was beyond the pale. However, the middle finger is inciteful. I once gave it to a woman who beeped at me on I-95 near Fredericksburg, VA, and she tried to avenge herself by pulling in front of me and slamming on the brakes.

#1 She admitted she raised her finger AFTER he began harassing her

#2 So what? We are supposed to respond to a raised finger by trying to run someone off the road?

This asshole would not have done this if there was a guy in the car and there was a Marine sticker next to the Bush sign. So he's a coward, period. They have a conceal and carry law in Florida too bad she wasn't packing.

Probably would have had a much different outcome had this happened in, say, Texas.

Impossible I've read the statutes and they all explicitly say politicial hate crimes can only be committed by republicans.

Let's ditch the words "hate crime". A crime is a crime, period. That said, politically-motivated violence deserves the maximum penalty that the law can provide - this nation more than any other cannot tolerate violent political intimidation, it goes against everything this country stands for.

Looks like DU will be short a poster for a few years.

Stickers on the backs of cars can really send people over the edge it seems. It might be better to be travel stickerless.

"Let's ditch the words "hate crime""

I will do no such thing.

"That said, politically-motivated violence deserves the maximum penalty that the law can provide - this nation more than any other cannot tolerate violent political intimidation, it goes against everything this country stands for."

Exactly. Liberals have deployed the construct and I will use it against them directly or to illustrate is absurdity whenever possible.

"I know that he's very anti-Bush. But I don't see him doing anything like that. He's the least aggressive person I know."

I guess his dad knows a lot of aggressive people.

At one point the man pulled his car in front of Fernandez's, got out and started running toward her, Fernandez told police.

AT that point, he's extremely fortunate that Ms. Fernandez did not use the 1-2 ton weapon she was sitting inside of and run his pathetic hiney over.

I'm just enunciating the principle that a just society cannot criminalize thought, only action. Using the term "hate crime", even as a foil, concedes the possibility that it is legitimate to criminalize thought. If you concede that, they will follow by criminalizing our thoughts, as they have tried before and will most certainly try again. Don't give them grounds to stand on.

The place to take motivation into account is in sentencing, not in the definition of a crime.
