Prof. says (terrorist nuclear)attacks imminent

A terrorist attack using nuclear weapons is an imminent and immediate threat to the United States, said Harvard University professor Graham Allison during his lecture Monday in the School of Management.

Terrorists setting off a 10-kiloton nuclear bomb in Boston's Statehouse would vaporize everything within one-third of a mile, he said.

The lecture, part of the College of Communication's Distinguished Lecture Series, attracted hundreds of Boston University students as Allison addressed his new book, Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe.

COM Journalism Chair Robert Zelnick said he hoped the lecture would create public awareness and help students keep up with current events.

"Before 9/11, the criticism was that not enough attention was called to the danger of a nuclear attack," he said.

COM freshman Chris Grannon said the lecture was "extremely relevant to everyday life because terrorism is a big threat."

Allison, a professor in Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government declared the threat of a nuclear attack immediate, saying he believes Osama bin Laden wants to kill four million Americans, including two million American children, in order to balance out the ratio of Muslims killed by a "Zionist-Christian crusade."

Beg to difer. Unless his age is affecting his judgment, Graham Allison is an excellent scholar. His "Essence of Decision" (on the Cuban Missile crisis) is still a seminal work in poly sci and org. theory. Of course, that this came out last fall sort of takes away from his "imminent" assertion.
