Rare indeed is the occasion when litigation even tangentially involving hot dogs reaches the level of the Pennsylvania Superior Court.
In recognition of just such an infrequent event, I traveled to Oakland Monday to see Gene Scott. Better known as Scottie to his faithful clientele, he sells hot dogs, kielbasa and other grilled goodies from a large cart outside of the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library.
Three years ago, Scott, a 50-something Homewood resident, filed a lawsuit in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court challenging the constitutionality of a 2000 city law regulating vendors.
Scott sued after City Council failed to approve his place of business since 1992 -- the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive -- as a designated vending site. He continues to sell sausage there illegally.

Over-regulation and plain stupid silly laws are drowning small business.
Go ahead and cut them up if you want. We don't care.
Hey! I used to eat that guys hotdogs when I went to Pitt! He had good dogs.
Back in the early 90's when I was in school, there was a huge fued between 2 hot dog vendors trying to sell on the same street corner. I can't remember who was there first, but Scottie was the one that ended up staying. That fued made its way into the papers. That was probably back somewhere between 93-95 so probably has no bearing on this.
Well he better...
Sounds like he parks his cart just a short hop, skip & a jump from The Original Hot Dog Shop.
Cripes, The O has some of the best dogs I've ever eaten... (not to mention FRIES and BEER!!!)
How this guy can compete with them has me stumped!!
It's spelled "feud". Thanks.
...believe Scott thinks that in this nation, if no one is being harmed, there should be no infringement on any hard-working person's attempt to make an honest living.
Well, he's right!
well, considering the O had at least a C if not D restaurant sanitation rating, i am thinking scott may have a leg up on that angle!! you know i relied heavily on those restaurant sanitation ratings back in the Burgh, they don't have those down here. i say let Scotty sell weenies!
Now this is the kind of criminal I can warm up to.
Thanks for bringing up "The O"... now I'm hungry... :(
I've had this guys dogs too. That spot is about a block from the Law School, which is across the street from the O, where the french fries are stacked six-inches high or more. It's a good deal, for those who like shoe-string fries.
I prefer the nearly-extinct crinkle-cut, they don't seem as greasy.

You are right, he's only 1 block from the 'O' but it's a good location. He gets everyone walking between Forbes Quad, Hillman library, the Cathederal, and elsewhere on campus. It's a good nodal point in foot traffic for campus. It's not that people crave hot dogs and are going to walk to the 'O'. It's just that he is right there right now and the dogs smell good.
Sanitation didn't bother me much back then, the 'O' was cheaper than anything. I ate more $2.99 16" O pies than I care to admit. Winners was another favorite of mine. Good, cheap, spicy Korean food. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Ok, the mens rooms is finally cleaned up. And, thank God, the Iron City Light is still good stuff.
Yes, I really do miss the PEOPLE in Pittsburgh. They are the greatest.
