San Quentin is Scott Peterson's new home

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - They can hear the waves lapping along the shore. But most inmates on San Quentin's death row rarely catch a glimpse of the San Francisco Bay.

And that may be just fine with Scott Peterson, who was transported to San Quentin early Thursday, a day after being sentenced to death for murdering his pregnant wife and dumping her body into the bay near the Berkeley Marina - about 10 miles, as the crow flies, from where he'll likely spend the rest of his life.

Peterson has become the 644th prisoner awaiting death in San Quentin's execution chamber. After his arrival, he was processed just like any other inmate, according to Corrections Department spokeswoman Terry Thornton.

After a strip-search, he was to be given a shower, a haircut and state-issued clothing. He was to be photographed and assigned a Department of Corrections identification number. Then, a counselor will review his criminal, educational, medical and psychological histories to properly classify the 32-year-old former fertilizer salesman, a process that could take several weeks.

"Grade B" prisoners, deemed a threat to themselves or others, get limited privileges - just 10 hours a week of outdoor exercise, alone in a small cage.

"From what I hear, he hasn't given the staff (at the jail in Redwood City) any problems," Thornton said, so this classification may be unlikely for Peterson.

"Grade A" inmates are allowed to spend five hours of every day outside in a common yard, where they can exercise, play chess and basketball. They get offered showers three times a week. They also may keep a television, which they pay for themselves, in their cell, they receive mail, phone calls and visitors. They also may attend religious services regularly.

The article also says he is at risk from other convicts because of the nature of his crimes. Guess there's an hiearchy of sorts among cons.

He should be forced to look at pictures of his dead, unborn baby every day until he's executed. What a sick SOB.

Question:..if inmates are always making shanks and other weapons, how the hell do they let them keep a TV set in tbeir cell..you could make lots of weapons from unnecessary parts of the TV?....and I assume it's cable?..does anyone know?

Unfortunately, give CA's reluctance to actually execute any of the vermin it houses on Death Row, Peterson will likely die quietly of old age before he ever has to face the executioner.

But given the way the courts work in California, there's no telling whether Peterson will ever receive that lethal injection. Most deaths on death row in California happen as a result of natural causes, or at the hands of other inmates. Peterson will likely sit for more than five years before he is appointed an attorney for his first, mandatory appeal to the California Supreme Court.

Of the 38 states with the death penalty, California moves the slowest toward executions.

A big reason for the delays is that there are too many inmates with too few lawyers willing to volunteer for the relatively low-paying job. A condemned Peterson would join about 120 others who do not yet have lawyers. And even when an attorney is appointed, there are no deadlines for California's high court to act.

I would wager that if they took up a collection, they could raise enough money to hire a top notch private attorney to handle Scot Peterson's mandatory appeal, just to move the process along...

He'll have a computer and will be chatting on his website with women all over the world who want to marry him

You are right! Last night, Nancy Grace was saying he has received THOUSANDS of letters from women who are in love with the pus-bag. For that reason alone, I hope the death penalty process miraculously speeds up. He will be a celebrity hero in prison, like Charles Manson, who got more fan mail than anyone in the history of penal corrections. (no freudian slip intended)

Has he already polished his toenails?

No rush, he'll have ample time in that position to take care of them.

May he never find comfort in a conventional chair again...

It depends on how the prisoners view his conviction of killing Connor. If they see Connor as a child, he's a dead man. Prisoners don't like prisoners who harm children (good part of the reason Father Geoghan ended up a dead man in jail after his child molestation conviction). If they see Conner as a fetus, then he might be in better shape.

Personally, I'm hoping for the former - he'll die a gruesome death.
