PARIS. March 18 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Russia's support for the idea of China's territorial integrity.
"The Soviet Union and Russia have always been in favor of China's territorial integrity. We have not changed our position and think that China has a right to fully restore its territorial integrity. We understand the Chinese authorities' efforts to resolve this problem," Putin told a press conference in Paris on Friday.
"We assume this problem will be resolved by peaceful methods," Putin said.
This stuff gets me so PO'd I can't think sometimes...

I think Russia doesn't fear China in that way.
They share the politics of communism in some way and Russia can always start a big nuclear war with China, so there isn't too much worry of invasion.
Japan, India and Singapore are forming an alliance against China and probably many others will sign up. I doubt if China will be a credible military threat.
But, my fear is that Starfish is right, China may just buy the government of Taiwan. After all, they bought the Democratic National Committee during the Clinton administration. Politicians are cheap.
If so, then how do we deal with that?
..and carried to its logical ends, RED CHINA could claim North/Central/South America according to folklore...of course, the West Coast Liberals eager to welcome them.

Mainland China's "historical" claim on the island of Taiwan is bogus. In modern history China actually had possession the the island for 18 years..
This has never been anything about a legitimate claim on the island. It is about "face". The loss of face that the freedom of the island represents; the Chinese that fled to the island not being under control of the ChiComs.

Let me amend that statement by saysing that I can't remember where I read it, but I do remember clearly thinking at the time that it was a reliable, legitimate reference.

Cynical as it may sound, I think that as long as the fat cats (politicians, powerful businessmen and important, \powerful families) have their economic freedom and wealth, the rest of Hong Kong will just have to accept Beijing's rule.
Taiwan won't be too far behind.
Taiwan ain't no beacon of democracy, imho. Never was; never will be. Chang was as vicious, avaricious, power-hungry and corrupt as any general or fat cat on the mainland. He was SIMPLY not a communist. The commies PROBABLY didn't offer him enough money way back when he was "bribe-able."
Chang's wife, a model of his ilk, just passed away a while back. She was 104 and lived in UNABASHED wealth and luxury, with her army of body guards and nurse, in a New York City penthouse. She was Chang all over again. Again, it's all an opinion folks, just based on what I've read over the years.

I think that China and the USSR always had this same kind of relationship. The Chinese realized, I think, a long while back that the Russians were as fearless and unafraid of losing THOUSANDS of soldies as they were. In essence, they knew that the Russians were as crazy as they were.
I think that Dubya should invite Putin to the "ranch," put a Stetson on him and have a great photo op to add to this one.
