Why is Garry Trudeau doing a "Doonesbury" sequence inspired by disgraced Republican-friendly reporter Jeff Gannon?
"I'm not sure it's commonly understood to what lengths this administration is willing to go to bypass the 'filter,' as Bush calls the media," the cartoonist replied in an e-mail interview. "The president made it official Wednesday -- his Justice Department (news - web sites), fresh from signing off on torture, apparently thinks propaganda's OK too."
When asked if he thought the press has underreported the Gannon episode, pundit payola, and other examples of media manipulation, Trudeau said: "It's not that it's been underreported so far. It's just that the media, in both its own and the public's interest, ought to stay with this story. If Bush is prepared to defend fake news, then the media should be equally prepared to say why it's anti-democratic and an abuse of power."
Trudeau, who was referring to George W. Bush's remarks about government-created video news releases for TV stations, started the "Doonesbury" sequence this Monday and said he will continue it through next week. In it, Secretary of Toady Affairs Andrews finds a "stooge" to replace Gannon as a lobber of softball questions in the White House press corps. He's Roland Hedley, the narcissistic journalist long known to "Doonesbury" readers.
Course Trudeau wouldn't think of including forged documents in his definition of "fake news."
Frankly, government produced propaganda is just fine with me if 1) the source is disclosed and 2) the government does not prevent dissenting opinions from speaking. I know the media outlets didn't do a good enough job at #1, but they sure as hell do plenty of #2.

90% of the people in that press room are liberals who voted for John Kerry. One guy in that room was a GOP partisan - so freaking what? I can't believe the stupid libs made such a big deal out of this. And to refer to this as Bush "propaganda" is just ridiculous - as if it's the same thing as the Communists controlling all the media and rigidly censoring every word uttered in the public (and private) sphere.
Trudeau is a dinosaur, an angry communist who draws cartoons that feature his jaundiced view of the world.

I agree, to some extent. The government clearly has a reasonable interest in producing public relations media to inform the citizenry. It becomes an issue when a couple of things happen:
A) the source isn't disclosed to the public. This happens a lot, as you mention, but it can't be blamed on any one party: the media outlets are at least as culpable here as the producers of the "propaganda." It does seem that dressing up a message from the government as "news" leads to trouble.
B) The government pumps big bucks into partisan propoganda: It's ok if the agriculture department informs us of their new soybean program (or whatever), but how would you like to see government funded pro-abortion adds/movies/fake news reports?
C) And, of course, when government propoganda pushes out debate, as you mention.
The agony and the irony... They're killing me.

Trudeau is an ass, the government has been "feeding" news to the media for decades. From the "Movie Time" news shown in theatres during WWII up to today. It's not news and certainly not 'new'.

Does anyone even read Doonesbury anymore? It's like one of those long-running comics that remain on the pages more out of respect for its long life than for any brilliant humor. Kind of like Nancy and Garfield.

Their is something about watching Trudeau, Moyers, and Kellior implode and stew in their own bitterness that brings joy.
Their mask of being an enlightened social critics gone, their pretence of being insightful exposed, their little daggers of hate ignored by all but their fellow kool-aid drinkers.

Yes Garry, Left wing media ought to stay with this story. The longer the better.
Of course, the lefty bloggers are determined to make Gannon into a huge story. But no matter how many times the great hunters say "Did you see the size of that chipmunk!" and no matter how much parsley you garnish the plate with, it's still a chipmunk.
If Gary doesn't believe in propaganda, why has he been publishing his cartoon for so many years?
But his cartoons of the Gulf War were the best, almost like he was there and knew what was really happening.
Trudeau doesn't need no stinking government to tell him what to print. He's a stooge for all the crackpot radical feminists, leftists, and other imbeciles in the anti-American army. You better believe that whenever one of the crackpot groups says we must do such and such about something, Trudeau will echo it in his strip. He's the biggest leftist toady of them all.
