Maine:Bill To Ban Tobacco Ads Goes Up In Smoke

AUGUSTA, Maine -- A bill to ban tobacco ads in stores where children could see them does not appear to be making progress in Augusta.

State Rep. Stephen Bowen’s bill would have banned any tobacco ad a child could see.

Testimony before the Health and Human Services Committee Thursday showed the law was unlikely to pass constitutional muster.

Bowen said people should be able to take their children into a store and not have to pass the ads. He said he’ll find another way to get the ads out of view.

"Mommy, what is tobacco"?

A substance, honey, that was spawned from he!! but is made legal by the heavenly creatures out to protect us against ourselves by forcing us to send our money to Washington to help take care of us.

"Mommy, I don't get it"?

I don't either sweetheart, I don't either.

Just be still and accept it then someone else will take care of it.

Right! Most people, even kids, that smoke or consider smoking know that it is unhealthy and will kill you. I'd rather see a resurgence of that bill calling for the deposit on cigarette butts.

"Mommy, what is tobacco"?

Isn't this ridiculous?!!

And I can just see him pounding his fist on the table saying:

"He said he’ll find another way to get the ads out of view."

He is a freakin control freak.  I sure would like to know what party he belongs too.  I might have to look this idiot up!

(This guy needs a life AND a woman! geesh!)

Yea, right.

More nonsensical, money costing, ridiculous, regulation that would be a pennies worth of prevention that would cost millions.

Only a dem would come up with such an as...(I'm mean) fruitless idea.

Stephen Bowen of Rockport is serving his second term in the Maine House of Representatives. He currently sits on the Joint Committee on Appropriations and Financial Affairs. Rep. Bowen represents District 46, Camden and Rockport.

During the first session of the 121st Legislature, Rep. Bowen sponsored a bill to “Establish the Intergovernmental Advisory Commission.” This legislation, which was carried over to the second session, would establish a permanent commission to reduce duplication among all three levels of government in the State, as well as within each level of government. Rep. Bowen’s work on local government issues won him an appointment to the Knox County Charter commission.

Rep. Bowen earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science at Drew University and his Master’s in Education at George Mason University. He teaches Social Studies at Camden Rockport Middle School.

He and his wife, Heather, have two girls: Emily, age 5 and Katherine, age 2. He reports that they are his favorite hobby.

Maine tried the Butt Bill several years ago, but it never passed.  I'd love to see a bill passed to stop people from throwing used condoms out their car windows or bags of trash from Burger King.  Wouldn't you?

I bet steroid use in baseball does too, however government has more pressing issues to delve into doesn't it?

Of course such trivial concerns seem to get government representatives air time and after all what is more important to a representative? Air time or resolving pertinent issues?

Stupidity. Just as stupid as censoring all the other stuff "for the children". The government should not act as a parent.

Children should not be sheltered from advertising, nudity, swearing, violence, etc *by the government*. If a parent wants to do that, fine. The FCC, and conservative and liberal activists who try to push this nanny state bs should just get laid (hopefully with birth control so we don't have to put up with even more crybaby pussies).
