(London's Mayor "Red Ken") Livingstone Blames Press for Deaths of Diana and Kelly

London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone today blamed the press for the deaths of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dr David Kelly, the Government scientist at the centre of the row over the Iraq war dossiers.

Mr Livingstone, speaking during a phone-in on the LBC 97.3 FM Nick Ferrari programme, said: “The best of reporters are great and courageous people, many of them give their lives to bring us the truth.

“There’s a downside: the real underbelly of British reporting are the scum of the earth and they destroy lives.

“I think if we had better reporting standards in this country David Kelly would be alive. If we didn’t have this paparazzi nonsense Princess Diana would be alive. Bad journalism actually takes people’s lives.

“And then there are the thousands of people whose lives are ruined by intrusive investigations into their private lives.

Mr. Mayor seems never to have an unexpressed thought. Previous threads about Livingstone, famous for comparing a Jewish reporter to a "Nazi concentration camp guard":

First a small correction to one of the links. Mayor Livingstone is the Mayor of London not the Lord Mayor. The Lord Mayor covers only The City of London (about 1 square mile right in the centre containing the main financial district), and is an ancient and dignified office. The Mayor of London covers the whole of Greater London, and is a modern office which represents a significant breach with the traditions of British governance.

There’s a downside: the real underbelly of British reporting are the scum of the earth and they destroy lives.

I have to agree with that statement as it stands, but as usual Ken leaps well beyond the bounds of common sense and starts adding in piles of crap. I suppose at least he didn't add in a dash of anti-semitism (of which he has been quite fond recently).

I have no great regard for the paparazzi, either, but I am a little surprised Livingstone didn't seize the opportunity to blame the Joos or George W. Bush for the irresponsible actions of a few reporters!

I thought the speed and possible inebriation of the driver is what caused the accident. If you are a celebrity (Like it or not) you better be prepared to embrace the press as a third wheel.

Di loved and used the photo-op when capturing her "good works". What did Di expect when she went out stud finding? They would leave her alone? . Should of accepted the fact of the paparazzi was with her for life especially when the British SS could not protect her anymore.

Nah, Ken. Your beloved socialized medicine killed her. While Diana was bleeding to death, the French bureaucrats were arguing over which hospital to take her to. It took them more than 90 minutes to get her to the hospital they finally decided on. Any paramedic or doctor will tell you that in order to give the patient the best odds for surviving, they need to get to the hospital within 20 minutes.
