WASHINGTON -- The nation's undocumented immigrant population surged to 10.3 million last year, spurred largely since 2000 by the arrivals of unauthorized Mexicans in the United States, a report being released Monday says.
The population of undocumented residents in the United States increased by about 23 percent from 8.4 million in the four-year period ending last March, according to the analysis of government data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a private research group.

That equates to a net increase of roughly 485,000 per year between 2000 and 2004. The estimate was derived by subtracting the number of unauthorized immigrants who leave the United States, die or acquire legal status from the number of new undocumented immigrants that arrive each year.
The prospect of better job opportunities in the United States than in their native countries remains a powerful lure for many immigrants, said Pew center director Roberto Suro, pointing to a reason often cited by other researchers.
"The border has been the focus of federal efforts (to cut illegal entry) and has not produced a reduction in flow. Certainly that's an indication of ongoing demand," he said.
The population is growing at a similar pace as in the late 1990s even though the U.S. economy today isn't as robust, Suro said.
Assuming the flow of undocumented immigrants into the country hasn't abated since March 2004, the population is likely near 11 million now.
The report considered "undocumented" immigrants primarily as those here illegally; those in the United States on expired visas; or those who violated the terms of their admission in other ways.

If Hillary were sincere about closing the US borders I would vote for her many times. Problem is; I can't trust Hillary. Another problem is; I can't trust Bush either. We are really in a quandary.

You can already see the 'new Hillary look.' I think she's even had a voice coach (like Kerry did), so she won't sound like such a witch. I'm sure she's paid close attention to how Bush won, so she knows how to push voters buttons. I look for many more scenes of her coming out of church with a Bible in her hand.

The illegals in this country are certainly between 20-30 Million. I bet they are arriving at 3-5 million/year.

I live in Houston and the illegals really don't bother me. I can get a full car was for $15 dollars. Have my lawn mowed for $20. Go to the taco stand and get carnitas, barbacoa, and any other taco for about a buck each. In addition, I have a lady that cleans my house and does my laundry for $30. Also, I go to a catholic church that is full of illegals. A few years ago they refurbished our 100 year old church free of charge. The parish only had to pay for supplies. Yes there are many criminals in their population. This is why George Bushes immigration reform is a winner. We can weed out the felons and criminals. All of these savings allows me to invest more money and spend more in our economy.
I don't think it is just political correctness or worrying about offending Hispanic voters. I think that some folks at the top of our policy-making hierarchy have decided that illegal immigrants (like cheap imported goods from China) are ESSENTIAL for our economy. Not just to keep costs down for building contractors and restaurant owners, but to keep inflation down generally for the health of the overall economy. I don't know if they are right, but I think that is what is going on.
Wow! Thats like the entire population of Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal combined.
I cant even comprehend how that many people can slip through and stay through.
