A TEENAGER was sent home from school after the headteacher ruled she was the wrong race to have a braided hairstyle.
Olivia Acton, 13, was told she could not join her classmates at Middleton Technology College because her tightly plaited hair was too "extreme" for the strict uniform policy.
However, two other pupils at the school who have an Afro-Caribbean background are allowed to attend the school with similar hairstyles because it reflects their cultural heritage.
The teenager usually has her hair brushed straight but had it braided during a family holiday.
She was stunned to be turned away when she returned to school. She was told she can only go back to the classroom if she unpicks the plaits.
Olivia's father, Michael, says the school's rule is discriminatory and should be changed. But the school insists the uniform policy is an important way of maintaining standards and ensuring all youngsters are a part of the school community.

Reminds me of the story of a High School kid who thought the star of david looked really cool. He wore one on a necklace, but had to remove it when the administrators learned he wasn't a jew.
What a bunch of BS. If she would have had her butt hanging out of her shorts, that would have been OK.
Every time we'd go to Cancun, the girls would get their hair braided like that. Why, I don't know. But they did.

Can't be racism...didn't you know Whites can only discriminate? Only whites can be racist...I actually got into this discussion on another message board with a guy who was taking African-American studies in college (forget which college he was studying at), he informed me that his professor said only whites could be racist...the discussion got pretty heated. :)
My daughter does the same thing on vacation. Keeps her cool. Costs a pretty penny though.
The headteacher's reasoning is preposterous. Not only is the discriminatory effect clearly racist, but the 'do isn't street at all - it's a vacation thing and nothing more.
I've made the first move to get my kid out of Public School and homeschool him. I hope it happens.
Because it's something different and girls love change. This school is the ideal for a "PC" police state. LOL.

So since they want all the youngsters to be a part of the community, shouldn't one reaching out to other races, exemplifying diversity, be embraced, not punished? And kicking her OUT of the community is hardly a way to PROMOTE community...
However, if they can find a normal judge, this kid has all her college costs covered with the settlement. You have to wonder how some school administrators tie their own shoes in the morning.
LOL, It's weird how the definition of something simple can change based on who the person saying it is.

I think most schools give students and parents a copy of school rules at the beginning of each year. If you disagre with the rules maybe you should voice your opinion then or seek another school. Tatoos and piercing have become a big fad for kids that most regret later. Many look like something painted that fell face frist in a fishing tackle box. At 21 it is their right to look as they please and they can wait until then.

What an opportunity! If this logic is widely accepted then my kids will be able to read the Bible at school and talk about Jesus because that reflects their cultural (American) heritage.

Man, I never could stand watching Duh-dley Moore.
I don't have kids, but when I do, I... oh hell, I don't know what I'll do. I'd like to say I'll teach them critical thinking and logic, but from what I've seen, most parents are just happy if they can get the kids to not shove a jam sandwich in the VCR or direct-dial Albania on the cell phone and then wander off.
Having said that, this sounds like one of those things that would have sent my father marching straight off to the school, jaw set as he warmed up his Ranting Engine.

Plaits, Braids, Corn rows, and Dreadlocks predate written history in every culture.

For hundreds of years, the easiest way to recognize a christian at a distance or in battle, was by his braids or dreadlocks.
I remember about 2 years ago I chaperoned my daughters science class to a field trip at an amusement park. The purpose was to discuss "simple machines" and I showed the kids hundreds of examples.
They loved it, but what they really learned was a social studies lesson. There was an inner city school at the park that day as well. While my group was in line, there was an inner city school group in front of us. One of my groups kids said hi to a girl of similar age in the other group. She screamed at Caitlin "F$&^ You you little rich white bitch." and turned to her friends and said "Let's get out of here, too many white motherf&^&kers here!"
I tried my best to explain what had happened to the kids and not use terms that anyone would use against me if it wen't beyond my group. That was hard.
I had that done to my hair while on vacation in Bahamas....I think it looks nice .....(I'm white too)
