Support falters for the 'nuclear option'
The Washington Times ^ | March 23, 2005 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 03/23/2005 8:54:24 AM PST by GopherIt

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist does not have firm support among his caucus to employ the so-called "nuclear option" for dislodging the Democratic filibusters against President Bush's judicial nominees. Of the 55 Republicans in the chamber, at least six are undecided or adamantly opposed to the plan of using the rare parliamentary procedure to end the filibusters with a simple majority vote, rather than the 60 votes normally required. "I am very concerned about the overuse of the filibuster," said Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican who said she remains undecided. "But ....

Republicans do not deserve to be in control of Congress. They have the Senate and House, yet run scared of the socialists. They are too weak kneed to do a darn thing but shutter and run scared. Their spine is made of freshly boiled spaghetti noodles.

At the very least, the Spineless Republicans should shut down the business of the Senate make the Democrats hold the floor for a filibuster. If the Dems want to perpetually debate and issue, make them talk. I want Sheets standing and talking for 25 hours straight. I want the Dems to have to explain why preventing some conservative nominee for a low level federal court is more important than the rest of the business of the Senate.

Although no mind reader, I suspect that part of the reluctance to change the rules is that some of the Repubs think that at some point in the future the Repubs may need to use the filibusters against Dems judicial nominations.

Sure would be funny (not) if the Republicans didn't use the "nuclear option" for fear of what will heppane when the Dems recapture the Senate, and the Dems use it anyway the first chance they get.

Of course, the Dems would NEVER do that, would they?

I doubt, Republicans have never filibustered a Democratic President's appeals court nominee. And the same Senators who are refusing to change the rules now probably wouldn't be inclinded to use the filibuster in the future, despite the fact that the Democrats are now using using it with impunity. Republicans are really taking it where the sun doesn't shine on nominees to the federal bench.

Like I prediced Monday, this Terri thing would backfire on the Republicans and they would back away from the nuclear option because Terri's Law already made them look like they are overly beholden to Religious Right. Members fear that Dems will more easily be able to paint Bush nominees as extreme...after all look what the Republicans and the President did in the dark of night Monday morning. Public was 2:1 against. Even Republicans were split.

Last action for me: DC on the 7th March for Justice II, then resign.

It is clear as a bell. Democrats are trying to run out the clock trying to wait until Bush is a lame duck. Republicans control the executive and legislative branches so ifthey can't get this done then there is no reason to vote for them, just sit back let the Dems get back in and wait for the train wreck.

I and many many others worked long and hard in this last election to see the wimps win out. NO WAY!

I know news like this sucks, but we made good strides in '00, '02 and '04. We need to keep voting and make more strides in '06, '08, '10, etc. This is a problem that has a long-term solution. Bit by bit, we can get more of the Congress. We just have to keep the RATS looking like fools and get the RINOs to show their true colors.

I am with you. Two years ago, I got sick and tired of it. I refused to rejoin. I told them to drop me from their rolls. They continued to bury me under mail wanting money, people calling me almost every night. It seems money was all I was there for. Just a pocketbook to them. They would not listen to my requests to be dropped. They continue to this day, two years later to bury me with mail wanting me to rejoin and to send money. I don't even bother opening any of it anymore. I simply dump it all in the trash. I figured if they could not listen to me when I told them I wanted nothing else sent to me, then they certainly are not going to listen to anything else I had to say. I got fed up with it. It was all just a money gathering campaign. Give here, give to this, give over here, give us just a few dollars here, there, everywhere. If I gave money to every republican who asked for money, I would be in bankruptcy court by now. They all want $50 here, $50 there, $100 over here. I got sick of it. It was just join and give money. We ain't gonna do a damned thing for you, but give us your money. So, I quit them.

Changing the rules takes it back to the way it was constitutionally intended and that worked for 200 years until the Dems changed it. I think Frist and Co just talked too much about it instead of just doing it and the regular RINO brigade started reading the NY Times and listening to Hardball and got cold feet.

If the Republicans can't pass this and get strict constitutionalists into the courts, it will be the biggest mistake since George HW Bush raised taxes in his first term. Read my lips -- you will lose MILLIONS of votes if strict Constitutionalists are appointed to the court system.

The Republicans expanded government spending (excluding defense spending) at the fastest rate since Lyndon B. Johnson's administration in Bush's first term and now they refuse to do what is necessary to fix the judicial system? It is a waste of time and money in supporting such a party.

My two RINOs are as beloved by the liberals here in Maine as they are dispised by republicans in the free USA. There is no chance of getting rid of them. All I can do is send my republican money out of state to support campaigns runing real republicans, like Thune. If we elect enough real republicans, then the DIVA's and RINO's will not have enough power to destroy the presidents program.

Actually they don't care about your measly donation. Why appease you & 5000 others when they can go to a corp & get the same for a favor. For many years I have been calling this the "Two-Party Cartel". They are owned & run by the elites that do not have our interests at stake. The ONLY way to get to these pols is to vote outside of this cartel. While voting in it you have legitimized them. And I guarantee that there will not be a conservative Supreme Court when GW leaves but watch out because the elites will put The Hildabeast in & you will see the most liberal government - possibly the end to any type of past Americanism.

There has to be as much energy expended on this as was expended on trying to stop Arlen Specter from heading the judiciary. The phone lines to DC must melt if the Republicans are going to get the message.

And, it might be a good idea to remind Sen. McCain that any Presidential run in 2008 will be DOA if he stands in the way on this.

If this report were from any other source but the Wash Times, I'd be skeptical.

But, in truth, I think the Senate repubbies are actually SCARED of their potential power.

Competitiveness, decisiveness, action has been bred out of them by years of Washington exposer to the (1) MSM, (2) daily indoctrination of them and their staffs by the Wash Post and NY Times (3) the cutthroat evil typical of the democrats scares the nerve (the truth and the honor) out of them.

In the long run, it's why term limits are important.

I quit giving to the RNC when Clinton wasn't removed. The Senate is now Republican controlled as is the House and the Executive branch.

I rememember Gingrich saying, "Just give us the Congress and the Presidency and watch the changes". Well, Gingrich retired in disgrace and I'm still waiting.

When (if) the USSC finally gets a right tilt, there will be no excuse for the Pubs to rein in the size of government (I Know, I know...but that is what they promised) they would have NO EXCUSES then.
