WACO, Texas -- President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes." He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law. More than 1,000 people -- including 30 pilots and their private planes -- have volunteered for the Minuteman Project, beginning next month along the Arizona-Mexico border. Civilians will monitor the movement of illegal aliens for the month of April and report them to the Border Patrol. Mr. Bush said after yesterday's continental summit, with Mexican President Vicente Fox and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin at Baylor University, that he finds such actions unacceptable. "I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America," Mr. Bush said at a joint press conference. "I'm for enforcing the law in a rational way." The Minuteman Project was born out of a long-held perception among many residents that more Border Patrol agents are needed to handle the flow of illegal immigrants. Mr. Bush was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats earlier this month for failing to add 2,000 agents to the Border Patrol, as set out in the intelligence overhaul legislation he signed in December. The president's 2006 budget allows enough money to add only 210 agents for the U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico. Mr. Bush said he will "continue to push for reasonable, common-sense immigration policy." He has proposed legislation to grant guest-worker status to millions of illegal aliens already in the United States. The legislation has attracted scant support in Congress, where it is widely regarded as another amnesty that will encourage even more illegal immigration.
I wish just once he would show a little compassion for America's working poor and a little empathy for the problems of America's middle class.
He could start by explaining how when we open America's job market to all of the world's 6 billion poor people how we will stop wages from falling from the current prevailing wage as every new job gets advertised at $5.15 per hour.
He could then explain how middle class high tech workers will be protected from well educated Indians willing to work at half the price.
He could then explain who is going to pick up the tab for the impact of importing an unlimited number of new people on schools, hospitals, jails, social programs and highways and other infrastructure.
I'd like a little serving of compassion for Americans mixed in with my conservatism please.

Mr. President, these are people who are just doing the jobs government doesn't want.

We knew his policy on this issue well before the election. I can't really fathom anyone's surprise. It's not like he lied to the people. He said he wanted amnesty, and that is what he is pursuing.
What did everyone expect? If he's a man of his word, he's a man of his word, and he promised to pursue amnesty.

The only reason I can figure is that we have killed so many people via abortion that would have become taxpayers Bush figures we need all the warm bodies we can get and eventually they can pay taxes.

President Bush, on the volunteer Minuteman Project, which is spotting illegal aliens entering the US:

This from a president whose administration refuses to fund the Border Patrol.
This from a president whose Department of “Homeland Security” actively refuses to enforce immigration laws.
This from a president who has proposed a massive amnesty for the millions of illegal aliens who’ve broken our immigration laws.
This from a president who has allowed illegal immigration to increase after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

And, President Bush, I wanted to ask you about your opinion about those people who are hunting migrant people along the border.

No mention of the "The Minuteman Project" project in the Q&A, yet the reporter invents a story linking the two.
I'm just aghast that the Washington Times would be so sloppy/sarcasm.
Yeah, we were given the choice of bad (Bush) or worse (Kerry).
But he acts like we gave him a mandate for this stuff when he only mentioned it twice during the campaign because every time he did, the reaction was so negative. Actually I should correct myself. He only mentioned it twice in English prior to the election. He continued to advertise it in Spanish on his website.
Unbelievable! F'ing unbelievable. America is defending everyone on earth but ourselves-the Government won't protect our nation's soverienty, and forbids any American from doing anything on their own!!!!
