Posted on 03/30/2005 4:44:30 AM PST by SJackson
October 2000, Place de la République in Paris: the first of what would become an endless series of ambiguous pro-Palestinian demonstrations welcomed the snake of anti-Semitism into its heart. Death to the Jews rang out loud and clear that day as policemen stood by, journalists watched with apparent indifference, and the mass of demonstrators thronged and thrust as demonstrators do.
8 March 2005, Place de la République: a thousand young toughs pierced the heart of a student demonstration and unleashed their rage not against the police but against the privileged classes in their own age groupthe protesting lycée students. Operating in gangs of ten and twenty, the casseurs (smashers) in brand-name sweat suits swept through the march like pirate ships, zeroed in on their prey, attacked from behind. They threw kids to the ground, gratuitously beating and kicking them, snatching handbags, ipods, wallets, and cell phones. Riot police looking like robots with their thick leather padding stood by as the predators cut through the crowd wielding knives, clubs, and tear gas bombs.
In the space of a few hours the hallowed tradition of student protest imploded. But trouble had been brewing since January when the lycée students started organizing to oppose la loi Fillon, an umpteenth educational reform project proposed by the current Minister of Education, François Fillon. The previous minister was brought down by similar protests against a different sort of reform. This is the way the system goes, educational reform followed by protest and so on and so forth, while no one is offering any project that could address the acute crisis that is shaking the very foundations of the French educational system. And, precisely, the lycée--which is the equivalent of high school with regard to the age of the students (roughly 15-18) but closer to the first year of college in terms of the level of instructionis collapsing under the weight of a large population of no longer elite kids who are being pushed through to earn a downgraded baccalauréat, while the occupational-training lycées siphon off the losers, condemned to flounder in a distressed job market.
Since January, plainclothesmen had been tracing the smasher contingent as it trickled and then spilled into the center of town from outlying arrondissements and banlieues to do mischief on the fringes of the protest movement. The numbers swelled from one demonstration to the next, the mischief increased accordingly. And yet the police were caught off guard when a thousand smashers moved into action against the students on March 8th. A police spokesman later explained that they could not go after the gangs in the midst of the crowd without causing collateral damage. They did arrest at least 80 suspects on the edges of the march and in the side streets where the troublemakers pursued their punitive expedition.
When the student protestors took to the streets again on March 15th they marched arm in arm in square dance formations, protected by a cordon sanitaire of husky union members, and massive squadrons of riot police. The ranks of demonstrators had dwindled to a piddling leftover, the smashers were kept at bay, but sirens wailed all that afternoon as riot control vehicles with cattle catchers trundled between La République and la Nation, giving the impression that all hell was breaking loose.
French media dutifully reported the March 8th incidents, a few shocking images of bloodied and battered students were shown on TV, but there doesnt seem to be any serious reflection about this striking developmenta real clash of civilizations. Student street protests are a mainstay of French life, no less important than sidewalk cafés, long vacations, bare breast advertisements, and Doctors without Borders. And smashers are part and parcel of the international street protest tradition. They are the alter ego of the misguided do-gooders who are only asking for peace and justice for the Palestinians, for the environment, for indigenous tribes, for African cotton planters. The smashers are the attack dogs launched against public order. They smash shop windows, bank façades, cars, and policemen. From 2000 to 2003, Pro-Palestinian / anti-war demonstrations in Paris habitually ended with flag burnings, destruction of public property, and Hamas salutes. The jihadi contingent, the Saddamites, the apologists for terrorism came to dominate the peace movement. When President Bush came to France for the June 2004 D-Day commemoration he was treated to a tremendous anti-Bush demonstration; in addition to the usual jihad contingent, a horde of skuzzy beer-drinking anarchists paraded with their pitbulls and rotweilers, promising à Paris comme à Falluja la guerilla vaincra [in Paris, in Falluja, guerilla warriors will win].
The guerilla warriors did show up in March, but they didnt attack the established order, they beat up and plundered kids their own age who have a brighter future and a fancier brand of running shoes. The mentality of these French adolescents--whose parents come from Africa or the Maghreb--is a mixture of common ordinary delinquency, jihad against the infidels, blind revolt of the wretched of the earth, and stupid antics of spoiled kids.
The violent eruption of the Third World in the midst of a time-honored French protest tradition is the very emblem of what is going wrong in French society at the dawn of the 21st century. All the more noteworthy when the Paris street is compared to the Lebanese street, where close to a million demonstrators braving danger of another magnitude thronged the streets of Beirut that same week, determined to wrest their Islamized Middle Eastern country from the stranglehold of a Syrian occupant who had seemeduntil recentlyinvulnerable.
What does it mean when the smashers start smashing the demonstrators? Voices have been warning that the passions unleashed by the virulent anti-Zionism fostered at all levels of French society since the autumn of 2000 would not stop with Zionists and Jews; they would turn against the society as a whole. The warning was majestically ignored. As anti-Zionism morphed into anti-Semitism and joined hands with anti-Americanism, we witnessed an increasing trend to self-destructive histrionics. The connection with reality is easily damaged in a culture that tends to take the word for the deed, the posture for the position, the pretension for power. The public has been fed heavy doses of propaganda from the very media that should have been helping responsible citizens understand the great upheavals taking place in the Middle East, with repercussions in their own daily lives. Instead, conflict is blamed on Israel and the United States, while conflict in Europe is stubbornly denied. Only recently French PM Jean-Pierre Raffarin, campaigning in support of the proposed European Constitution, declared in his inimitable 1950s radio voice: Europe means peace.
And what do the lycéens of France want? Some observers say the kids dont even know themselves. While a small minority may have good arguments against the reform, most have nothing more than the word NO painted on their foreheads and hands. They are against the reform the same way they are against the war: in a vacuum. The inevitable rainbow PACE [peace in Italian] flags were flying in the demonstrations, even as the predators bore down on the hapless victims.
How much further can romanticized revolution go? The pro-Palestinian movement that has sullied huge swathes of French society culminated in the shamefully orchestrated death in Paris of Yasser Arafat. The banana republic anti-American anti-war movement deflated when jihadi peace marchers beat up youths from the leftist Zionist Hashomer Hazair movement in the last great Parisian peace demonstration in March 2003. And now the grandchildren of May 68 cant enjoy their ritual protest movement in peace. The Palestinians revered by European humanitarianists are kept at a safe distance; but on March 8th the children of the Third World, the punks and the dropouts, the hoodlums and the lost souls crashed the party and spoke for themselves with kicks and hammerlocks.
While the editorial director of the let-it-all-hang-out daily Libération, Grandpa Serge July with his grisly beard, was thumping around Baghdad trying to retrieve his reporter Florence Aubenas held hostage in Lebanon since January 5th, his newspaper was gushing over the student movement personified in the figure of Morgane Moalic, a 17 year-old Lolita revolutionary photographed against a backdrop of a Marx-Hegel-Lenin calendar. The young lady wont listen to American pop music, because America is the cradle of evil. She prefers Noir Désir, a group that disbanded a few years ago when bandleader Bertrand Cantat went to jail for beating his sweetheart Marie Trintignant to death in Vilnius. Not to look like an old fuddy-duddy, the intellectually pretentious newspaper of record, Le Monde, featured its own 17 year-old: Constance Blanchard, president of the National Union of Lycéens. In between the portrait of Morgane, published on the eve of the March 8th protest, and the portrait of Constance, featured the day after, fell the shadow of violence that ripped apart their demonstration and left the movement, at least for the moment, in tatters.
Not a hint of that shadow on the portraits of Morgane and Constance. Pouting and triumphant with youthful exasperation they stand firm against the system, the no-future, the very unfairness of life and studies.
26 March 2005: Any doubt that may have lingered about the importance of the March 8th incidents is now dispelled by an equally momentous event: Le Monde, Frances newspaper of record, has admittedafter several weeks of soul-searching and honest investigative journalismto an across the board, deliberate, longstanding refusal to acknowledge the existence of anti-white anti-French racism. Ombudsman Robert Solé strings together a series of letters from readers, interspersed with vivid details on the violence of the attacks, and concludes that the paper has been treating the issue with politically correct kid gloves and a dearth of investigation. When Le Monde wakes up, other French media might just open one eye. Stay tuned for further developments.
The beasts sanctimonious leftist elites raised and nurtured are fully mature and turning on their masters. They have been warned, but did not listen. Now they reap what they sowed.
The French, who are so protective of their culture their government has an official department charged with keeping non-french words such as 'hamburger' out of the language, will wake up soon to the fact they must face the realities of demographics: there are many people they have allowed to live in France who have no desire to become French.
Further, many of these people have cultural and religious values that are openly hostile to France, and these people are reproducing at rates many times that at which the native French are.
If the French do not do something very soon, they will have lost France to people who will gladly impose an Islamic culture, a power-oriented culture that will not make the same mistake as it reshapes the nation.
This implies that the French must do something drastic, for their liberal democratic values force them to commit cultural suicide based on the relative rates of reproduction. The options are stark and conflict with a range of liberal values: the native French must start to have a lot more children, or they must deport large numbers of Muslim non-natives.
Retaking Europe since the Spanish expelled the Muslims over 500 years ago has long been the goal of Islam. Indeed, the Madrid train bombings were done in the name of reclaiming " Andalusia", the Moorish name for southern Spain.
This summarizes the history in Paris of the last 40 years, since the concept of "palestinians" was invented. Even in the mid sixties, when I first personally experienced Paris in depth, it was apparent that a cancer was growing.
By the mid-seventies, Parisians had abandoned their more modern shopping centers, monuments and cultural icons to the rabble, and stayed behind barred doors in their banlieue, bought dogs for protection, willingly blind to the inevitable.
I don't see expulsion as an option, France is farther along the slide to oblivion than the U.S. is, and will drop into the violence of a national pest eradication uncivil war. It would be educational to watch cosely and not repeat their mistake.
After that will come a loooooooooooooooong period of regrets that they had a civilized country and they threw it away with both hands as fast as they possibly could.
And these so-called "journalists" wonder why the public holds them in such contempt.
I tend to think of it as the "European Caliphate"
That's it exactly. They will never be French, they only wait until France becomes Shari'a, and they are starting to feel cocky.
Le Monde waking to the threat against France is a first step. Imagine the shattering explosion inside the average French intellectual's mind when they realize that all the appeasement hasn't worked afterall. It might be too much for them to take the next step and consider that the islamofacist hatred of America is similarly illogical, as opposed to valid.
'Course I don't really care whether France wakes up in time to rescue itself.
One day, the frenchies are going to find out that there are worse people in the world that "evil" Americans, or hell, even Jooooooooooooooos. And they've invited them into France by the boatload.
By then it'll be too late though.
Now the Muslims have found out that thuggery works on a large scale. France is going to find it impossible to put that genie back into the bottle.
The stupid antics of these spoiled kids cannot compare to the stupid antics of the spoiled kids who serve as reporters etc. in the "Mainstream Newsmedia" and who lead the decadent, Leftist movements of the West.
"The violent eruption of the Third World in the midst of a time-honored French protest tradition is the very emblem of what is going wrong in French society at the dawn of the 21st century."
I don't know how to break this to you, but France is a Third World country. And if you think this is violent--just wait!
The entire mess was both predictable and preventable.
The French people--like many other Europeans--ignored the obvious; allowed themselves to get lost in hubris, denial, and moral vacuity; and succumbed to a hideous, suicidal decadence that has swept the West like the plague and promises to be far more devastating.
I agree. The world will discover what "La Zone" is, and why it was designed to be blocked up by a few armoured cars.
I tend to agree with you. Although I don't think the French will be able to take their country back, it will become a cauldron of fire. The British Isles, I think, will also become a cauldron of fire. I can't even imagine what the Germans will do when they start to wake up.
Another France Fubar ping!
The Dreyfus Affair again"When Dreyfus was paraded through the streets of Paris in a humiliating display, 'Death to Dreyfus' was not the call of the mob. Instead, they chanted, 'Death to the Jews.' Students of history will also recall who was in the jeering crowd on that day. Theodor Herzl, who was reporting on the Dreyfus Affair, was there to hear the citizens of Paris demanding death for his people. He saw the meaning of the events surrounding Dreyfus's persecution, that in spite of their most sincere efforts, the Jews could not be secure as a homeless minority."

Call me crazy, but I'm convinced that anti-Semitism persists so strongly because it is a form of revolt against God. The Jews are the messengers who brought us God's blessings (and His standards). Killing the messengers is a way to get at the Source. I know it isn't rational, but that's the point. Rebellion against God and his ways is emotional and insane.
Anti-Semitic societies unravel because they are societies that, over time, foster chaos and the will to power above all else.
Excellent spiritual insight!
What a shame...heh, heh, heh. Hoist by their own petard, oie?
What an ignorant moron.

Cookcounty, you are exactly right in what you wrote in the above quote. More than you may know. Spot-on and right-on.
Ping to my usual list for cheers to another good FReeper!
What is "La Zone"?
Good points, except for the fact that "Al-Andalus" was the name for present day Andalucia.
Has France ever REALLY been civilized? I mean, I guess certain elements have been, they certainly have been effete, but, they've pretty much constantly been in conflict since 1787 haven't they? Destroying images of God and pretending to be better than everyone? Can we help enjoying these arrogant poseurs getting their comeuppance?
The French have always been the houseguest that never leaves and never pays for anything.
It refers to the poverty-stricken, dignity-stripped suburban housing projects around Paris. Theodore Dalrymple talks about it in a fascinating article here.
Whether they're a civilization or not we'll leave to another day. But they lead civilized lives. They can generally go about their lives peaceably. They don't have to fear their doors being broken down in the middle of the night and being dragged off to a gulag. They don't need to worry where their next meal is coming from, nor do they have to hunt it down.
They live comfortable lives in a technologically advanced country that their forebears built, but they'd rather, through pride and spite, throw it away and live under muslim dominiation, was my main point.
Honestly, it's really hard to sympathize with people who won't do anything to protect themselves but blame every single problem in the world on US(A), so I guess I'll just microwave a bag of corn, pull up my easy chair, crack open a brew, and watch.
They're 2-3 generations into this immigration madness now. While they're still bringing in large numbers of people who could be deported, the vast majority of these Algerians and Moroccans have been in France for decades, are French citizens and have every "right" to be there, at least as much right as any native french citizens. Who do they deport? Who do they kill?
If France can't bring itself, because of Political Correctness, to shut off the supply of immigrants, I think it's fantasy to think that they're going to wake up one day and kill or deport every muslim in the country.
As much as we (certainly including myself!) may harp and b*tch about Mexican border-jumpers, I'd much rather have them, than the Muslims that France has imported. At least they're Christians and want the same American dream that I do, namely, a better life for their families.
It will be very interesting if france decides they might have to work more closely with America on this.
I'm still boycotting all things french and have no intention of swaying. They have a boatload of apologizing to do for their last 40 years of antiAmericanism.
'Camp of the Saints' come true.
France has a history of syphilisation.
And I guess what I'm saying is despite their centuries of protestations to the contrary, they've always been an ignorant cultural backwater with delusions of grandeur. That's what has gotten them to this pass.
Of course, we are in no position to boast. We are not so far down the road as they but it may be too late for us as well, if the wave of ignorance, bigotry, misappropriation, and death turn out to be a tsunami as it appears it might be.
They have a long road back to sanity.
Thanks for the link to the article explaining La Zone. This is my introduction to City Journal--many intersting article. I will visit often to read more.
Yes, I read this article too. Thanks for posting it. It's really terrible what's happening in France and much of Europe. Whatever France cultural and social faults are, it's still a part of what's called "the West". "West" is a bit amorphous meaning, but the point is that France and much of Europe allowed themselves to buy into a false ideology of Multiculturalism rather then understanding and respecting their Cultural and Spiritual heritage rooted in the best of Christianity, Enlightment and Rennaisance and Greco-Roman political traditions. France failed to demand that all immigrants, including Muslims respect the best of French heritage and make a serious effort to integrate into French Society. Multiculturalism combined with blind anti-Americanism, anti Semitism, etc. causing France to implode.
I still hope that France will realize what's at stake, start seriously dealing with AntiSemitism and AntiAmericanism and begin agressively prosecuting and deporting all the Islamic Extremists. I hope also that France starts unequivocally demanding from the rest of Muslim immigrants that they must respect and integrate into French Society. You can't have "Multiculturalism" (euphemism for coexistence) and preserve Civilization. More agressive and primitive culture will always win unless more civilized culture decisively protects itself.
:) LOL! You said it!
