Are MS Word's Grammar Checker Well Enough, Professor Asks
NBC5i ^ | March 29, 2005

What's wrong with this sentence?

"Microsoft the company should big improve Word grammar check."

A University of Washington associate professor ran it through the grammar check in Microsoft Word, and the software found it acceptable.

Sandeep Krishnamurthy is now on a mission to get the software giant to tweak its grammar-check system.

He says he discovered problems after scolding a student he'd given a poor grade for submitting a paper filled with grammatical errors. The student complained that she had used the software to check for errors.

Microsoft says grammar is almost impossible for a computer to master because it requires artificial intelligence that isn't available. Microsoft Word spokesman Chris Pratley said the best way to ensure grammar is correct is to pay attention in school.

Thank heavens for people who want to take the time needed to fix this stuff. Seems like a huge task to me.

Yes, it's the software's fault...

If the computer says it's wrong, it likely is.
But if the computer DOES NOT say it's wrong, that DOES NOT mean that it's right.

"the best way to ensure grammar is correct is to pay attention in school.'

--> Too bad our teachers unions and all the thugs (executives that rip off the sckools) aren't doing their jobs. Parents need to do their jobs too. Let's put blame where it belongs.

The student complained that she had used the software to check for errors.

So....it was Bill Gates' fault she is an idiot? I thought the point of college was to learn things like grammar.

Typical 'student'. She complains instead of attempting to learn something.

With Word '97 I turned the grammar checker off. It was really bad. With the latest version I leave it on, but it is not perfect and never will be.

Their not.

They're not.

There not.

Are kids need English classes.

Our kids need English classes.

Too many kids don't know homonyms.

Two many kids don't know homonyms.

To many kids don't know homonyms.

Isn't this a little like a teacher finding that students can't handle math -- because their calculators were not very good? And the solution is to contact the calculator manufacturer?

Teachers should expect students to write well. Using MS Word is a crutch. If the crutch fails the student, the student should blame himself for depending on the crutch in the first place.

This teacher is part of the problem, IMO.

The way I learned how to punctuate sentences properly, aside from learning about grammar in school, was to simply repeat the sentence and place a comma wherever I took a breath. This worked very well until I became and asthmatic. Whenever I was short of breath, the number of commas went way up. After I took a shot off the inhaler, the commas went back down.

I hadn't until you asked. I did check, and it is in fact true (on Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.6926 SP-3)). I believed the article at face value becuase I have found that Microsoft Word doesn't pick up grammar errors myself.

Word has no clue how do cope with specialized terminology.

Yep. When I was working in health policy, Word would constantly want to replace "HMOs" with "homos."
