The deal's terms make clear that Berger spoke falsely last summer in public claims that in 2003 he twice inadvertently walked off with copies of a classified document during visits to the National Archives, then later lost them.
He described the episode last summer as "an honest mistake...."
The terms of Berger's agreement required him to acknowledge to the Justice Department the circumstances of the episode. Rather than misplacing or unintentionally throwing away three of the five copies he took from the archives, as the former national security adviser earlier maintained, he shredded them with a pair of scissors late one evening at the downtown offices of his international consulting business.
The document, written by former National Security Council terrorism expert Richard A. Clarke, was an "after-action review" prepared in early 2000 detailing the administration's actions to thwart terrorist attacks during the millennium celebration. It contained considerable discussion about the administration's awareness of the rising threat of attacks on U.S. soil.

This needs further investigation; given the documents he destroyed were copies, the analysis of them would indicate what his true motives were in trying to influence or distort the historical record.
I repeat he should have gone to jail and permanently lose his security clearance. He should never again be allowed near national security archives of this Country.

News reports indicate he is subject only to a three year revocation of his clearance...unless it is permanently revoked.

you get reinvestigated every 5 years. a 3 year revocation will put him well into expiration and he can just forget it. Besides, I doubt he will be in a position that requires a clearance after this and they won't waste the money on him.

he won't pass his next investigation. you have to have one every 5 years and you have to be in a position to require one. I doubt he will be able to pass the first and I SERIOUSLY doubt that he will be able to get into a job that requires something that high up anymore....
it isn't a whitewash. when DSS sees his next application, they will laugh at it and throw it away and deny him. I have seen people get denied for a lot less and people lose their clearances all the time for DUI's.....
No National Security Adviser of EITHER party would EVER be put in a prison cell. These folks know too much to be put in that kind of environment. Like it or not, Sandy Burger knows things that are best kept secret, regardless of his criminal activities. You don't want these people mad at you. That is just life.

Yeah, compare what Berger did to what the Watergate burglars did. There should be a Bergergate investigation, to see who else knew about his theft.
With all due respect, his SC was only suspended for three years, (which just happens to coincide with Dubya's term in office) not "revoked". And remember he's going to plead guilty to misdemeanor not a felony.
As such, if a DEM becomes POTUS in '08, the Sand Burglar will again have his SC, that you can bet the rent money on. Heck after the three years is up his SC might automatically be restored. Or maybe his lawyer only has to submit a letter requesting it be restored.
That's why (IMO) this 3 year suspension and misdemeanor plea stinks to high heaven. It only keeps him 'out of the game' while the RATS are on the outside looking in. Once they're back in, the Sand Burglar is too.
If this had been a Republican who destroyed official documents, the media, the democrats, everyone would be calling for the gallows.

Three of the documents are forever gone. There are no copies.
It is said that the documents were evolving drafts of the same document, and there are perhaps copies of them around. However, the documents that Berger destroyed contained "margin notes" made by people who had read the drafts and there are no copies left that have those "margin notes". They're gone.
It was purely and simply a cover-up. Berger planned to lie to the 9/11 Commission and he destroyed documents/margin notes that he knew would expose his lies.

I would also like to know to whom his phone records show he was making calls when in the library cramming papers into his clothing and dismissing library personnel. This had to be important to risk his position or he never would have committed this crime.
