Sandy Berger Pleads Guilty to Destroying Classified Document
Washington Post ^ | April 2, 2005 | Carol D. Leonnig

Posted on 04/02/2005 8:00:41 AM PST by MaximusRules

The deal's terms make clear that Berger spoke falsely last summer in public claims that in 2003 he twice inadvertently walked off with copies of a classified document during visits to the National Archives, then later lost them.

He described the episode last summer as "an honest mistake...."

The terms of Berger's agreement required him to acknowledge to the Justice Department the circumstances of the episode. Rather than misplacing or unintentionally throwing away three of the five copies he took from the archives, as the former national security adviser earlier maintained, he shredded them with a pair of scissors late one evening at the downtown offices of his international consulting business.

The document, written by former National Security Council terrorism expert Richard A. Clarke, was an "after-action review" prepared in early 2000 detailing the administration's actions to thwart terrorist attacks during the millennium celebration. It contained considerable discussion about the administration's awareness of the rising threat of attacks on U.S. soil.

Berger should be going to jail right now....he stole classified documents, mishandled classified documents, destroyed classified documents and then lied in public about his activities.

This needs further investigation; given the documents he destroyed were copies, the analysis of them would indicate what his true motives were in trying to influence or distort the historical record.

I repeat he should have gone to jail and permanently lose his security clearance. He should never again be allowed near national security archives of this Country.

Ana Montes, the famous Cuban spy who worked for years at DIA, did much the same thing and got 25 years. This is a case of domestic political espionage.

I want to know what kind of Idiocy he was trying to cover up!! Those bafoons in the Clinton whitehouse would have rather had to cover up their crap like a kitten on the floor rather than do the right -though hard- thing for the country. Cowards every one of them.

Friends of Berger said he hopes the embarrassing episode does not badly tarnish his reputation.

Someone needs to be making a list of those friends.

he won't pass a new investigation with that on there....

you get reinvestigated every 5 years. a 3 year revocation will put him well into expiration and he can just forget it. Besides, I doubt he will be in a position that requires a clearance after this and they won't waste the money on him.

nope....

he won't pass his next investigation. you have to have one every 5 years and you have to be in a position to require one. I doubt he will be able to pass the first and I SERIOUSLY doubt that he will be able to get into a job that requires something that high up anymore....

it isn't a whitewash. when DSS sees his next application, they will laugh at it and throw it away and deny him. I have seen people get denied for a lot less and people lose their clearances all the time for DUI's.....

No National Security Adviser of EITHER party would EVER be put in a prison cell. These folks know too much to be put in that kind of environment. Like it or not, Sandy Burger knows things that are best kept secret, regardless of his criminal activities. You don't want these people mad at you. That is just life.

Man,,,,I thought they had forgotten Mr. Bergers escapades.
At least someone was following up on it...I hope they find
out what was destroyed..I bet you it would say something like
they knew Osama was planning something, but they thought it
would occur 5-10years down the road..or it might have
discredited Richard Clarke....

This might be the beginning of the unveiling of the Clinton
failures....

Yeah, compare what Berger did to what the Watergate burglars did. There should be a Bergergate investigation, to see who else knew about his theft.

***he isnt getting his security clearance back after this....just to correct you.... ****

With all due respect, his SC was only suspended for three years, (which just happens to coincide with Dubya's term in office) not "revoked". And remember he's going to plead guilty to misdemeanor not a felony.

As such, if a DEM becomes POTUS in '08, the Sand Burglar will again have his SC, that you can bet the rent money on. Heck after the three years is up his SC might automatically be restored. Or maybe his lawyer only has to submit a letter requesting it be restored.

That's why (IMO) this 3 year suspension and misdemeanor plea stinks to high heaven. It only keeps him 'out of the game' while the RATS are on the outside looking in. Once they're back in, the Sand Burglar is too.

Berger has agreed to pay a $10,000 fine and accept a three-year suspension of his security clearance, a sentence prosecutors endorsed.

If this had been a Republican who destroyed official documents, the media, the democrats, everyone would be calling for the gallows.

This needs further investigation; given the documents he destroyed were copies,

Three of the documents are forever gone. There are no copies.

It is said that the documents were evolving drafts of the same document, and there are perhaps copies of them around. However, the documents that Berger destroyed contained "margin notes" made by people who had read the drafts and there are no copies left that have those "margin notes". They're gone.

It was purely and simply a cover-up. Berger planned to lie to the 9/11 Commission and he destroyed documents/margin notes that he knew would expose his lies.

Martha Stewart lies to SEC investigators about a stock sale and goes to prison. The justification for sending her is we need to be sure that there is confidence in stock transactions and to make everyone know that "even the powerful are not above the law".

Sandy Berger lies to NSA investigators about NATION SECURITY and pleads to a misdemeanor and a fine.

They should just sandblast the words off the Supreme Court Building that says "Equal Justice Under Law".

Sandy Berger, Clinton National Security Advisor, testified before the committee today. He said that during the 1996 campaign there was no adequate screening of White House visitors done.

SEN. FRED THOMPSON, Chairman, Senate Governmental Affairs Committee (To Berger): There for a while there’s really an unbelievable string of events taking place. You had an individual by the name of Wong June, chairman of the Chinese International Trust & Investment Company, an arms manufacturing company, which is run by the People’s Liberation Army, connected to a plan to smuggle assault rifles into the United States, attended a coffee with the President in February of ‘96. Ning Lap Sing, Mr. Wu, head of real estate development conglomerate with--from Macao. It’s a notorious place where a lot of at least gambling racketeering is going on. Roger Tamraz, who we have talked to, over really the objections of the NSC, managed to get into the White House I believe six times, including seeing a movie with the President. Gregory LaShinksy, international businessman linked to organized crime in Russia and the smuggling of nuclear materials, drug smuggling and money laundering, attended the dinner with the President in October of 1993, and I take it that you were not aware of this disturbing pattern of activities and--but I also assume that had you been aware, you would have been interested, or the NSC would have been interested in checking on who these individuals were and whether or not there were any adverse implications to there being with the President or the Vice President.

KWAME HOLMAN: Berger said he was unaware Hotung’s wife had pledged a $100,000 contribution to the Democratic Party at about the same time he was asked to meet with Hotung.

SEN. FRED THOMPSON: It was apparently worth $100,000 to him to have a photograph taken with the No. 2 person at the NSC. I think that’s--

SAMUEL BERGER: Mr. Chairman, I really--I can’t accept that conclusion, first of all. I don’t know the facts. But, you know, I’ve looked at the documents, and my impression is that he actually had already decided to give before any meeting with me came up...............Excerpt

I would also like to know to whom his phone records show he was making calls when in the library cramming papers into his clothing and dismissing library personnel. This had to be important to risk his position or he never would have committed this crime.

"Sandy Burger knows things that are best kept secret, regardless of his criminal activities. You don't want these people mad at you. That is just life."

I have to disagree. He may know things that can hurt Bill and Hillary and friends. But hurt this country....??

Let's examine, once again, the extent the MSM went to attack G.W. Bush with lies. They used false statements, purportedly based on Classifed Info, to call the President a Liar!

They used people involved in security and intelligence to call the President a Liar and a Manipulator and a guilty of a Cover-up!

The purpose was to overthrow the U.S. President by shifting American opinion in one of the most frenzied, hate filled campaigns in history.

This damaged American in front of the World, gave status to Socialist/Communist Anti-Americans, American hating Arabs (maybe an oxymoron), and a Voice to all other Anti-Americans.

So, what harm could it be to throw this Bastard in Jail?!!?

Yeah. As far as the Washington Post is concerned, only Republicans "lie".

Can you imagine what these scumbags at the Washingtomn Post would be saying if it was Condi Rice (or any other Republican) who got caught red-handed stealing classified national security documents from the National Archives? You would be able to cut the righteous indignation in the Post's newsroom (as well as the hypocrisy) with a chainsaw.

The Justice Dept. appears to be going out of it's way to
minimize his punishment, saying only a 3 year revocation.
That, on top of a measly 10 grand fine, instead of the
hundred grand allowed, AND no jail time, is an OBVIOUS
slap on the wrist for a serious crime.
The question is WHY?
