R.C. Sproul: Schiavo's Death Marks America's Move Toward 'Neo-Barbarism'
Agape ^ | Ap 5 05 | Allie Martin, Bill Fancher, and Jenni Parker

Posted on 04/05/2005 12:54:09 PM PDT by churchillbuff

A leading pastor and theologian says last week's state-sanctioned death of Terri Schiavo marks a turning point for America, and it is crucial for the Church in this country to wake up and mobilize against euthanasia and other signs of the times.

Author and Bible teacher Dr. R.C. Sproul is the founder and chairman of Ligonier Ministries. His teaching can be heard daily on the Renewing Your Mind radio broadcast on more than 300 radio outlets in the U.S. and throughout 60 countries. Recently his attention was focused, like that of much of the nation, on the tragic and disturbing events of the Terri Schiavo case.

After all that happened to the disabled Florida woman, particularly in the final weeks of her life, Sproul feels the Church in America needs to wake up and recognize the serious threat to life and liberty that is operating in the very midst of the nation's system of government.

"I think it's time to go back and read the Declaration of Independence again," the theologian says. "We have some serious problems with the fundamental structure of government in the United States, and there need to be some serious changes. And my prayer is that this is what happens."

What needs to take place, Sproul contends, is what often happens in the history of society faced with one or more pivotal occurrences like the killing of Terri Schiavo. "Cultures change, governments change, usually when a single event provokes a crisis," he says. "It brings matters to a head. But we have an ethical crisis in this country, one that's not going to go away, with respect to the sanctity of human life."

The Christian author and minister believes the manner of Terri Schiavo's death reflects changes that have taken place in American culture since the 1960s. He notes, "Many years ago, Harold Lindsell described American culture after the revolution of the 60s as a 'neo-pagan culture.' I think now what Terri Schiavo's death marks is the transition to a neo-barbarian culture."

Barbarians, according to various encyclopedia sources, are defined by sociologists as those social parasites who prey upon civilization, sometimes enslaving others or looting and plundering, in order to survive at others' expense. And according to Sproul, America's "civilization" is beginning to look more and more like that.

"I think that's where we are," the minister says. "We've become barbarians, because what we've just witnessed is the willful starving and dehydration of a living human being." And lamentably, he adds, even many Christians believed it was right for the state to sanction the brain-damaged Florida woman's death.

Sproul says the Church needs to rise to the occasion of this crisis and fulfill its role as the conscience of the nation, before it is too late. He is urging Christian citizens to take a stand against euthanasia -- against the barbaric "culture of death" that threatens to overwhelm the mainstream America's ethical sensibilities.

Taking Terri's Struggle Forward Take a stand -- that is exactly what many of those pro-life supporters who were involved in the fight to keep Terri Schiavo alive are trying to do now as they enter what they call "Phase Two" of their effort. At a Washington, DC, press conference last weekend at Capitol Hill, Pat Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition said those who fought to prevent the court-ordered starvation death of the disabled woman have moved on from the first part of their campaign -- designated "Terri's Voice" -- and are mobilizing in a new direction.

"The next part of the campaign is 'Never Again," Mahoney says, describing the effort to raise awareness about euthanasia, disability concerns, and other sanctity-of-life challenges, and to ensure that all disabled people are treated with dignity and respect.

"We're going to address these issues," the pro-life spokesman says, "and begin to take those first steps from the struggling and painful death of Terri into moving this forward in a positive way."

And one of the ways the Coalition plans to do this, he adds, is by addressing misinformation about the amount of public support for the court-ordered starvation of the 41-year-old hospice patient.

A number of mainstream media outlets have cited polls claiming most people favored the removal of Schiavo's feeding and hydration tube and also that a majority, by a wide margin, opposed a law mandating federal review of her case. But later this week, Mahoney says the Coalition will be unveiling what the group contends is a more accurate poll of the nation's views on the Schiavo case.

Now that Terri is gone, the Coalition members are concentrating their attention on the fight to honor Terri's memory by safeguarding against any similar tragedies in the future. "We must now work to ensure that this never happens again," Mahoney says, "that Terri's legacy will be remembered, and to ensure that all those with disabilities -- all the weakest in our society -- are protected."

Meanwhile, Terri's family and the volunteers of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation have vowed to focus the efforts of the Foundation that bears her name on assistance to other desperate families seeking to protect similarly vulnerable loved ones.

***And lamentably, he adds, even many Christians believed it was right for the state to sanction the brain-damaged Florida woman's death.***

They believed it because that was the only logical conclusion they came to based on the limited and distorted infomation the Media was giving them.

The Media is the issue.

Listening to the MSM I got a very different picture than the one I received for knowlegable post here on FR.

We must work to break the Media's stonghold on this society.

I assume you mean "brain-dead" and no, she wasn't. Michael Schiavo, his brother, and that creep of a lawyer may say so, but Terri's family - and even a few of her nurses - have said otherwise. If it comes down to they-said they-said, who is more reliable?

I agree. Read my "Open letter to the American News Media"
at www.gunsandglory.blogspot.com

Everyone should learn that officials of the Nazi party WERE HUNG at Nuremberg for the same crime of murder that George Greer of the Florida 6th Circuit court pronounced on Terri Schiavo.

Who cares what this R. C. Sproal thinks!

People of faith will have antennas out for what the Lord says to actual men of God like Rick Warren, Joel Osteen, Marcus Lamb etc.

It's gotta suck when you can't properly spell your FR handle when you sign up.

Unless you really are the last Patroit. Could be a family name, I guess.

As to your point, there were a number of courts, up to and including the USSC, that would not agree.

"...Everyone should learn that officials of the Nazi party WERE HUNG at Nuremberg for the same crime...."

Maybe it is time we issued an official apology to those Nazis. After all, they considered Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies as subhuman just as Judge Greer and even a few zip wad Freepers consider Terri to have had too few motor skills to fit their idea of being properly alive. The pics and further descriptions of Terri smiling pretty well show up the Friends-of-Michael to be Nazis in my book.

The barbarians are definitely at the gate, and at the Walmarts, malls, stores, everywhere. I see them every weekend and they get worse every weekend. Just 7 days will pass and I can find the barbarians acting worse then the animals in the cages at the zoos. They make the caged animals at the zoo look so calm, orderly, thoughtful and civilized.

I am so tired of this "She was gone 15 years ago" rhetoric. I've heard that for 30 years. That is THE most offensive thing to say. I remember working in a nursing home years ago and hearing family members saying that of their parents. "They are not THERE anymore!" Of course they are THERE. Where else would they be! They are NOT dead, they have not YET passed on to heaven and will NOT till their heart stops. Until that point they ARE there.

There is always a tone in the way those who say that "They are not there" say it also. It is as if they are discarding something, an ol piece of rubbish, that has no use. They no longer have to deal with it anymore. It is not up to snuff for them. EVIL, selfish, self absorbed talk this is!

Man is neither and thereby must operate under God's rules

"I think that if you read them objectively you would come to a different conclusion."

2 Pet. 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

> What a crock - she was dead 15 years ago.

And the evidence on which you're basing your position?

Is it from the few euthanasia-oriented doctors whose opinions JINO Greer preferred to believe in the decisional court hearing on that issue? I've read that was a 3-2 decision as to whether she was in the hard-to define and often misdiagnosed PVS condition. It most assuredly was not the position of at least 30 medical professionals who, post-judgment, voluntarily stepped forward to provide affidavits of medical facts in opposition. This much larger group of medical professionals felt sufficiently and profoundly concerned enough about what they believed was an inaccurate diagnosis. They urged first-time thorough testing to fully diagnose and know Terri's actual condition. But JINO Greer, HINO and Felos weren't about to permit derailment of their full-steam ahead effort to execute Terri, a disabled and legally-helpless woman. Both federal and Florida laws were violated to achieve this tragic result. This evil triumvir has never disclosed why they were so adamantly opposed to a complete battery of medical tests for Terri.

Yes, Terri was brain-damaged. It's been reported that not even HINO made the claim that she was brain-dead. One thing for sure, she was not dying before Greer's civil order of execution forced dehydration and starvation on her. That's what caused her death; not her brain-damaged condition. Had she been brain-dead, her body would have expired on it's own without Greer's order. PVS was the official position of Greer's ruling. I suggest you find and read Florida's definition of PVS. It's defined differently from brain-dead.

IMHO, you are free to take that position for yourself, but only for yourself. None of us have the moral right to impose such a final decision on another human. Stalin and the Communist party, Hitler and the Nazis, and countless other tyrannies throughout history held the same view. Since that's the position you've apparently chosen, your choice, but it's certainly not a distinguished group with which you're aligning yourself.

Please refrain from slandering him!

"Remember this; or you may fall into error by fixing your minds so much upon the faith which is the channel of salvation as to forget the grace which is the fountain and source even of faith itself. Faith is the work of God's grace in us. No man comes to Me," says Jesus, "except the Father who sent Me draws him. . .Grace is the first and last moving cause of salvation; and faith, essential as it is, is only an important part of the machinery which grace employs. We are saved "through faith," but salvation is 'by grace.'"

'Neo-Barbarism'

There's nothing "neo" about starving people to death. Hitler, Stalin, Mao did a much better job of it than Michael Schiavo or Judge Geer.

Actually this is the not the first one. The Quinlan case was the first that involved court, but that was a little different. Then there was the Cruzan case that went to the Supreme Court and bounced back to the Missouri courts. In the Wendland case out in California, he died of pneumonia while they were still battling it out in court. I should have been paying more attention.

Terri is definitely the most high profile one and the most dastardly. It was slow and terrible. We musn't forget that they had done this to her twice before, and she must have suffered some ill effects during those attempts until the feeding tube was ordered restored.

BTW I just heard on the radio that her funeral mass was being said. May God rest her soul and give her family peace.

Your statement is unfortunate. There is a room for disagreement among experts in the field regarding Terri's level of consciousness. PVS is misdiagnosed 40% of the time. On top of that, the are many other unresolved matters in the case which should have been resolved before Terri was dehydrated.

From what I have gathered from his/her other posts, Ff is apparently of the opinion that if you are not into tongue speaking, chandelier swinging, aisle rolling, or the prosperity gospel; then you are a heretic. This is evidenced by the names of the people he continually cites as being his spiritual mentors.

I sincerely hope that I am wrong on that point. I didn't think anyone thought that way anymore.

I am sure glad that the salvation I have received from my Lord is not based on my outward actions, but upon the blood that he shed for me, otherwise I would never get past square one.
