When you want to alert someone to a particular story, you ping them. There are several ping lists here for different types of things.

a "ping"" is an alert to a particular thread or aarticle that a FReeper thinks might be of interest to certaain other people.

Youu simply put the names of posters wwhose aattention you wish to draw and then "ping" them..

When you post a reply, the name of the person you are replying to appears in the "To:" box. You can substitute or add other names to the box, separated by a semi-colon.

Often, when posters see an article that they think others would be interested in, they will type those peoples' names in the box. They type "ping" in the reply, and all of the people who wre listed in the box will have that thread show up on their list of articles to which they have replied or to which they have been "pinged."

"Ping" comes from the sound of radar, I believe.
